It was another great day in Ponyville, Equestria, especially for one such pony. The air was perfect temperature, there was only a slight breeze and the clouds were in short supply but still apparent... And for Rainbow Dash that meant one thing and one thing only.

STUNT FLYING PRACTICE!

And that was something she did with unholy enthusiasm, flying about the air and practicing her tricks with a great amount of finesse, leaving a rainbow trail behind her from her fast speed. As she neared a cloud she picked up speed and then proceeded to strut her stuff, mid-super speed, across the cloud. The Super Speed Strut came out as awesome as she pictured it, never once falling through the cloud. Laughing to herself, she doubled around, and proceeded to drop downward. The next trick on her repitiore? "Fantastic Filly Flash coming right up! Hahaha!" She was rapidly approaching the ground at this point, steadily preparing herself for the sudden trajectory change that would prevent her from crashing, and instead, complete the trick. "Okay, concentrate, concentraaaaate.... NOW!!!"

She quickly altered her trajectory and succeeded, causing quite a few flowers to blast in her direction in the resulting jet stream. The head-rush was getting quite complete by this point. As she picked up speed and angled herself upwards. "And for the final trick! The Buccaneer Blaze! Always a favorite!"

Rainbow Dash flew upwards and proceeded to-

HEY HEY HEY, DON'T TAKE THE CAMERA OFF OF HER YOU'LL MISS THE-

BOOOOOOOM!!!!! A brilliant light flashes off screen........ Never mind......

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

ANYWAYS, after this author brutally maims his camera man, we turn our attention back to Rainbow Dash, whom lowers herself back down to the lower levels of the sky before settling herself on a cloud she had pulled up and fluffed like a pillow. "Uuuuh... Man, after a long day of practice, nothing beats a nice mid-day nap." She stretched a bit, before settling herself on the cloud. "Ahhhh yeah, this is the life..."

It would be INFINATELY better if she could've been a member of the Wonderbolts though.... Meh, whatever. Regardless of what was going on on THAT front, she enjoyed life in Ponyville. Slow as it was at times, it had it's perks. One of these being great friends whom she perfectly saw eye to eye with-

Fluttershy quietly trotted along the streets of Ponyville, seemingly going about her own buisness. For whatever reason, she was eyeing the deep blue sky above, stopping every so often to squint at a nearby cloud, as if expecting to see something up there... Or rather, somepony.

Rainbow was her last hope, and she really wished that wasn't the case. Twilight was away in Canterlot, Rarity had a huge order to fill over the next few days, and considering it was the start of spring, Applejack was busy in the fields. As for Pinkie... Well, it wouldn't really be the best idea to bring her on an excursion like this. She silently sighed to herself, likely bracing herself to be dissapointed.

It wasn't like this would be her first time taking Rainbow with her, but she could tell Rainbow didn't enjoy it nearly as much as she did. And considering Dash had constantly brought it up in an attempt to get her to return the favor, she hadn't quite held up her end of the bargain. It would honestly be better if she didn't ask at all, but she really didn't want to go alone.

The biggest problem currently was that Rainbow was so hard to find: Considering how she was usually either constantly moving or lounging in the oddest of places, finding her was a chore within itself. Just as Fluttershy lowered her lead and began to give up hope, she noticed something flash in the distance: It was familiar to her, almost resembling a surge of electricity: Her eyes briefly glimmered with hope, as she sped off into the distance as fast as her inferior wings would allow her to go.

Once she made her way to the outskirts of town, she finally saw a familiar Rainbow Mane flowing on the cloud above. She readily took in a deep, shaky breath as she quietly called out to her. "U-um, excuse me Rainbow Dash..." she meekly spoke, shuffling her hoof against the dirt below nervously. "If, um, you weren't busy this weekend, I was just wondering if, well... U-um..." her voice slowly began to trail off, just like it always did when she got nervous. She let out a small whimper, unsure on if Dash had even heard her or not.

Dash had been JUST about to fall asleep when her finely tuned ears picked up a sound coming from the ground not too far below. She groaned a bit as she attempted to fall back asleep... But her mind insisted she wake up since she recognized the sound. Lazily, she shifted her body on the cloud and looked around on the ground... At least before she caught sight of that familiar yellow mare with the pink mane....

Immediately she snapped to attention. Okay, true enough, Fluttershy wasn't a friend she shared a LOT of interests with, but even so, she was still a friend. Briefly, her thoughts traveled back to the good old days back at the Jr. Speedster Flightcamp, where she was named 'Rainbow Crash' and Flutter herself was named 'Klutzershy'; Dash knew what it had been like to get picked on... But it was completely different making fun of her, the fastest flier in Equestria could take it. Fluttershy was an entirely different story, and she made that point clear by sticking up for her against a group of bullies.

They had been best friends since then.

"Mmm... Hey there Fluttershy." She groaned a bit and sat up on her cloud. Her body was telling her to lay back down, but her mind was insisting she'd stay up so Fluttershy didn't feel ignored or left out. Sides, seeing her out of her little clearing with all of the woodland creatures, much less coming looking for her, MUST'VE meant she needed something. "What's up pony? I was just about to take my after flight nap."

Fluttershy's ears flopped down in slight dissapointment. It seemed that Dash hadn't caught a single word she said, and to make matters worse, she had woken her up from what was probably a plesant nap. She hated inturrupting things like that, it made her feel like she was being nothing but a nuisance.

Normally, she was quite comfortable around her friends, but considering the fact that her news likely woulndn't be all that welcome, it was almost as if they had never met before. She let out a small gulp, her eyes shifting down to the ground as Rainbow looked down at her cheerfully, almost unsuspectingly. She didn't want to ruin her day, she seemed to be having a good time...

She couldn't do this to her.

"...N-nevermind Rainbow, i-it's nothing. Or, um, I guess it's something, b-but you don't need to worry about it. S-sorry for waking you up..." she replied, turning around and sulking away, as if expecting Rainbow to just let it slide and get onto her 'after flight nap'. She supposed it would be just as much fun by herself... Maybe. She could always bring an animal friend along, but they likely wouldn't be thrilled either...

Before Fluttershy could go too far however, there was the sound of a mass of weight taking off and slicing through the air, before a familiar blue, rainbow maned mare appeared beside her, looking at her strangely. "Come on don't be like that. How long have we been friends for? I mean really?" There was impatience in her tone, but, give her credit, she was doing her best to tone that back. "At least tell me what's going on."

Upon saying this, Rainbow thought to herself, thinking up one of the reasons why Fluttershy would want to see her specifically. "Do you need help finding some birds again?" She remembered one time so long ago when a Sonic Rainboom executed in practice scared off Fluttershy's birds from her clearing. The timid filly, of course, asked Dash to help round them back up when she found that they were too far apart from each other. Sure Rainbow wasn't ENTIRELY happy about having to do the chore, but she at least did it, knowing that she had to correct her mistake. "If that's all, I can squeeze in a few more minutes of flying." She grinned to herself, her confidence drives kicking in. "Birds are tough to herd so they make pretty good practice, and can really help out my speed and maneuverability!"

Fluttershy jumped slightly as Rainbow plopped down next to her, frowning at the Pegasus as she pressed her for more information. She could already tell where this was going, especially since this was her own doing. It was a common pattern, especially with Dash: she'd shy away from a topic, only for the other pony to be reluctant to let the subject go. She could detect the hint of annoyance in Dash's tone, so she supposed it would be best if she just got it over with. Besides, Dash had a point: she had the right to know.

Just as she opened her mouth to reply, though, Dash cut her off, causing her face to scrunch up reluctantly. Dash brought up the subject of finding birds, sending a brief wave of nostalgia over her that almost made her smile. It was soon replaced by the same gloomy frown, though, when she realized how much worse the situation was getting. Here she was, offering to help, which would likely just pressure her when Shy decided to actually tell her.

She slightly shifted her position so that she could hide behind her mane. "O-oh, thank you Rainbow Dash, but that's not exactly why I wanted to talk to you..." she said with a small sigh, trying to muster up the courage she needed. "Y-you see, um, it's the beginning of spring, a-and as you may know I kind of, um, go on a certain... Excursion around this time." she briefly tried to read Dash's expression to see if any of this was sinking in, then continued.

"Y-you know, um, the annual Butterfly Migration. But I really don't want to go alone, you see, and Everypony else is busy, you see, so, I was wondering if you, um..." she bit the bottom of her lip. She was acting like a fool: it was a simple question, that would have a simple answer, and yet still she couldn't will herself to say it without considerable effort. "Y-you know, wanted to come with me... Maybe...? Please...?" her gaze drifted down to the floor again, as she let out a desperate whimper. She felt a mixture of relief and distain now that the question finally leaked out of her lips, though she strongly regretting her silent plea at the end. "I-I know, you're probably too busy with other things, so I guess I'll just g-go away now, sorry for bothering you..."

........... THE.... The... THE THE THE THE THETHETHETHETHETHETHETHE-?!!?

"THE GREAT BUTTERFLY MIGRATION!?!?" It turned out Fluttershy didn't need to read her expression. That shout, combined with an expression that mixed surprise and disdain made it all too clear what she was thinking. Oh she remembered the Great Butterfly Migration alright. The last one she had attended with Fluttershy... Well it hadn't really been that bad... But the truth of the matter was...

IT WAS BUCKING BORING. BONES DEEP, AGONIZINGLY BORING. All it was to Rainbow was just watching a bunch of fluttering little bugs taking off into the air and disappearing over the horizon as SLOWLY AS POSSIBLE. That was bad enough, but there also had to be THOUSANDS of those little things making the already tedious sight even longer then what it was already. What was even worse? She was being forced to sit still THE ENTIRE TIME. Celestia forbid if her fast flying startled the brittle and slow flying butterflies and making them fall out of the sky; that woulda just made Fluttershy feel worse. Really if Rainbow wanted to watch ANYTHING flying past her, it would be the Dragons when they pass by during the Great Dragon Migration. Too bad that was once every generation though...

She was JUST about to say something to Fluttershy to remind her about how MISERABLE she had been the last time she was invited to the Butterfly migration... However Fluttershy beat her too it, finishing her question as Rainbow knew she would... And really? Rainbow was feeling more and more guilty as this went on. Sure she kept a tough face (.... Okay JUST BARELY), but it was still apparent. Fluttershy wanted a friend to come with her to the Great Butterfly Migration. Why? Because she knew that was exactly how the timid mare was...

Just hearing her whimpering and pleading made it all the worse, though what completed it was her puppy dog eyes and her sad little tone upon giving up ahead of time......................

"Uh... R-right... I... I guess I do." By Celestia it was hard getting those words out, and it was getting harder just watching her go off. "Uh, Fluttershy? Are you SURE you don't have anypony else you can invite to this? I know what you're like, after all."

Fluttershy found herself holding back another whimper as Dash partially yelled at her, lowering her head down almost shamefully. She saw this coming a mile away. Her eyes shook slightly, as if about to cry, but she managed to hold it back: she had prepared herself for this kind of reaction, and she knew she needed to act mature about this.

Dash gave a rather confusing answer, causing Fluttershy to slightly arch an eyebrow. She 'guessed she did'? What did she mean by that? Did that mean she wanted to come along, or was she agreeing with Fluttershy's statement in saying she was probably too busy? She let out a sigh of defeat: it didn't matter either way. "A-alright then... Thank you anyways, Rainbow..."

Dejected and hopeless, she turned and began to trot of with her head hanging low, not even bothering to watch where she was walking. She stopped briefly with a small twitch of the ear as Dash stopped her with a question, and she didn't even bother turning around to reply. "W-well, the only pony I haven't asked is Pinkie, and I'm not sure it's such a good idea to bring her..." she admitted. "U-um, anyways, bye Rainbow..." she concluded, continuing her slow trot.

Rainbow watched as Fluttershy walked off, looking greatly conflicted. Okay yes, she HATED the Great Butterfly Migration with the deepest fibers of her being, there was no-one in all of Equestria who could question that... But... What could she do? Fluttershy clearly didn't want to go to this thing alone, and there was clearly nopony else she could invite.

Rainbow found herself torn by maddening dislike of the Butterfly Migration, and the want to help out a friend. On one hoof there was helping out Fluttershy, a good friend of hers since filly-hood, but on that same hoof there awaited nothing but getting bored out of her freaking skull. On the other hoof however, there was staying home and letting a crying, lonely and sensitive Fluttershy go to this event alone.................

......................................................

............................................................................

........................................................................................

...........................................................SOMETIMES... SOMETIMES SHE JUST HATED HER NATURAL INBORN LOYALTY.....

"Fluttershy, wait a sec."

Fluttershy's stride broke for the second time, and she let out an almost irritated sigh. "What is it, Rainbow Dash?" she said, turning back to her with a slight tilt of the head. She didn't really know why her friend stopped her, but she had a slight hunch. And with that hunch came a mixed feeling of hope and distress.

......................... Rainbow took a long hard moment of silence before letting out a massive sigh. "Look... I'll... Go with you to the-..." She stopped a moment, as if something got lodged in her throat.

She was NOT going to enjoy what was going to happen next...

"Th-the Great Butterfly Migration... If nopony else will go with you, then I'll go." She said this with a slight grunt. Her distaste was clear, but the fact that she was willing to go spoke wonders... Or at least, that's what she thought.

Rainbow grew quiet for quite some time, and with each passing second Fluttershy got more and more uncomfortable. She wasn't usually one to say no to some peace and quiet, but something about the silence between the two was just unsettling. It was as if both of them wanted to say something, but neither of them had the will to say it. She was just about to turn around and high-tail it out of there, before Rainbow finally spoke up.

"Look... I'll... Go with you to the-..."

Fluttershy's eyed widened as Rainbow began speaking. She felt a surge of energy run up through her body, but she wasn't about to do anything until Rainbow finished her statement.

"Th-the Great Butterfly Migration... If nopony else will go with you, then I'll go."

Her face suddenly beamed at her childhood friend, her eyes practically shimmering with delight as she practically stumbled towards her. "R-really? you will? I-I mean, you don't have to- I-I'd be fine by mys- I-I'm sure I could find-" she bit her tounge, just deciding to take her friend's offer for what it was, squealing with delight and wrapping the pegasus in a grateful hug. "Oh, thank you SO much, Rainbow Dash!"

Rainbow wanted so much to smile at how happy Fluttershy looked at this point, but the frown remained, as if the reality of what she just agreed to do was starting to sink in. "You're welcome..."

Still Fluttershy was in a considerably better mood now, and that was cause to smile even a little bit. Fluttershy was always a timid little thing, and her sensitivity made her extra susceptible to emotional blows, so Rainbow Dash knew that this was probably a highlight of the flutter pony's day. Still she knew that for herself, the fastest flyer in Equestria, this was going to be an EXTRAORDINARILY long day... "So....... Where is this Migration at anyway? Is it at the usual place?"

Fluttershy released her hug after a few moments, knowing Dash wasn't really the kind of pony who enjoyed exceedingly long contact. She and Dash didn't always see eye to eye on a lot of topics, but it was evident that their long-time friendship shined through at this moment. Fluttershy knew she would have to return the favor in one way or another this time, and thankfully she was fairly certain she wouldn't be seeing anymore dragon migrations in her lifetime.

Rainbow asked her where the migration was, then inquired if it was in the same spot it was the last time she came along, to which Fluttershy nodded. "Y-yes, it's the same spot as last time... It's this saterday, near the meadow outside of Whitetail Woods." she confirmed, nervously scruffing her hoof against the ground. "U-um... Thank you again, Rainbow Dash. M-maybe it will be a bit more fun this year? I heard there might be some Sapho Longwings this year, those are very rare..." she said in a somewhat enthusiastic tone, as if expecting it to make it sound anymore appealing to Dash.

"Uh.... Sapho say what now?" It was immediately apparent that that didn't come as any sort of comfort to Rainbow Dash. Sapho Longwings weren't not present in her personal bestiary due to complete disinterest in butterflies in general. If anything, she had more interest in eagles or even Phoenix's. Now those guys were fast fliers.

Still....

Rainbow let out a sigh, as Fluttershy gave her the answer. Saterday huh? That gave her like... what? Two days? She supposed that was time enough to get some more flying in and get it all out of her systems. "Uuuugh.. Okay, got it." With that said, Rainbow Dash stretched a little bit before flying back up to the cloud she had been lounging on earlier. "I'll be back home around the time you come looking for me."
