Tinago had just made landfall on Equestria's southern coast, near an area marked on his map as Dream Valley. Asher was further to the East, on a small island, preparing for the arrival of the grand majority of their army. He trusted his friend to take the neccesary precautions to ensure nothing went wrong over there, independant of Tinago himself. His fellow zebra had always pulled through for him, and this time would be no different. He'd taken his party ahead for a different reason though. Word had reached him of a deserter from Zebrica; one very well-versed in their martial arts. Why one of his own would flee their home, straight into their enemy's territory, could mean only a few things. What he was most worried of was that the deserter would reveal Zebrican secrets to Equestria is exchange for sanctuary. That would not be allowed on his watch.

The Zebrican commander waved over one of his crew, the only among them that wasn't a full-blooded zebra. "Ezera! Come before me!"

The best decision I ever made was returning home when I did.

All Ezera could think of was this great war ever since she was drafted. One could say she was waiting for this moment her entire life, being a merc just didn't quell her bloodlust quite as much. But actually returning home and walking into this situation made joy swell into her heart, aching for the chance to shed blood. Not being a full-blooded Zebra made her want to prove her worth, although herself not finding it as a weakness, but the fear of others finding her weak because of it. She wanted to prove to her people, ergo the world that The Battlecross and Zebra kind was the dominant force in all The Known World. Just landing in this 'Dream Valley,' Ezera was preparing her personal items when their leader called for her specifically, and briskly made her way over.

"You summoned me? What needs to be done?"

Ah, there she was Ezera, known among those that knew her as 'the Battlecross'. Her multirace heritage would serve her equally well for both combat, and infiltration into this filthy, barbaric nation. He stood tall as the hybrid approached him, Ezera herself just a bit shorter than he, as tall as she was. "I've received word that we have deserters that have made their way north. The messenger wasn't entirely reliable on what exactly they looked like though. I need you-" He unfurled the map out in front of the two, and pointed to a village, much furter to the north, past even the city of Fillydelphia. "-to head here, to Ponyville, and find this deserter. Offer them, and any other zebras, or hybrids such as yourself, one chance to return to our army. If they refuse-" He rolled the map back up, and held it out for Ezera to take. "Kill them. There will be no reasoning with traitors beyond that."

Ezera nodded, her mission was clear, and she absolutely loved the idea of hunting down these traitors. It showed her loyalty to her people and her war, "Your mission will be accomplished, I will complete it or die trying. But that is highly unlikely." She said confidently, hoping to give Tinago a sense of trust with her.

She scanned the map, marking every landmark between here and this Ponyville, just in case she didn't acquire a map, or lost it. "Anything else you can tell me?"

Tinago nodded back at Ezera. "There is something that will be glaringly obvious. Although he is of pure Zebrican blood, his coat isn't any shade of white, gray, or black, as normal purebloods. He's said to be tan, as that of a bufallo, his stripes remaining gray. Where I believe I can trust you to perform this mission on your own, I'll be sending you support as well." He waved over yet another member of his crew, this one a pureblooded zebra. "Alonia, come! Ezera and yourself will be heading out shortly." The commander turned back to the hybrid, yet again. "And I'm putting you in charge. I don't believe I need to tell you to price for failure, if you don't complete this mission."

Alonia walked through the camp the camp the the Zebra army had made when they landed in Dream Valley. She sighed when she realized that everyone that she would see on this country would have to be considered her enemy. At the end of the day, she didn't truly hate the Pony folk, she had once healed a small group of Pony explorers who had gotten in to a bit of trouble with the local wildlife on the vast Zebrican plains. They had told her that they were looking for rare minerals that were said to be found in that part of the world, but did not need to hear their reason for coming, she only worried about their well being. She healed their injuries and sent them on their way, whether or not they found what they were looking for, she never truly learned, but she wished nothing but success on their journey.

However, these were troubling times, a time of War against an enemy that didn't even seem the enemy of her people only a few months before. Then their leader decided to glass an entire city using their most powerful magics. She had already refused to be a part of anything like that, both the making of the bomb and being a part of the squad that would invoke the actual explosion.

That was the only condition that she had when she was asked to be a part of the landing party by the High Shaman. If it was entirely her decision, Alonia would have gladly stayed in Zebrica, helping the various tribes and villages across the land with anything that ailed them. Instead she would be a part of the fighting, healing warriors instead of farmers and breaking bones instead of mending them. She had no problem with fighting, but she had only ever used combat magics in self defense despite how good she was at it.

It was then that she had reached Tinago's tent right as he heard him call for her. Inside was a Zebra hybrid who was introduced as Ezera. Alonia nodded at the two zebra who were both considerably taller than her, a sign of their warrior nature. However, her size would never make her feel weak, her power over the earth more than made up for any problem she had with her stature.

"So he's odd coloured? This shall be easier than expected." Ezera spoke as she turned to face Alonia, who had just entered the tent moments before. She hadn't spoken to this pure-blood before, she hadn't done much speaking to any of them on account that they were all complete strangers. Some would only allow that to be a minor hindrance, as Ezera wasn't normally accustomed to socializing, especially friend making.

"There is no need to fret Commander, this will be handled with the utmost precision and professionalism. You have my word."

He nodded to Alonia as she arrived next to them, motioning to Ezera. "In the event that you didn't hear me, you'll be working with Ezera here to go and bring back a deserter from Zebrica; a martial artist. Ezera will be in charge of the mission, with you supporting her in whatever ways that you see fit. If it gets to a point where you believe that capture or death is at hand for either of you, you're to retreat back to this camp, and seek me out immediately. I'd prefer to not waste the lives of my soldiers on fools who can't even be bothered to fight for their own homeland. Now, be off. There's no time to waste."

Tinago waved the two away, and headed back into the tent that had been set up for his command of what small crew he had left. The rest of the army would be arriving soon, so long as Asher still had control of the island that he'd been left with. A Zebrican archeologist had been left with his second-in-command, along with a much larger group of soldiers than what he currently had on hoof with him. Failure was even less an option on that island than it was to recapture this deserter.

Alonia listened as her mission was explained to her for the first time before turning towards Ezera, "I'll need a few minutes to get a hold of this land before we leave, I need to attune myself to the nature of this place," She said as she rubbed her hoof against the dirt floor of the tent, picking up a little bit of dust with the action, "The earth here is different than it is back home. The trees, clouds, even the sun and moon all seem to answer to a different master than the ones in our Homeland."

With that, the shaman left the tent and walked towards the edge of the camp, "You are welcome to watch the display if you feel the need; however, I must warn you that it is not something some would consider exciting. It is, on the other hoof, something not a lot of Zebras will get to witness in their lifetime," Alonia called back to the tent, aiming the statement at Ezera. This was a process that is considered one of the most intimate things a Shaman of the High Plains could do, an act that was meant to be witnessed by only Maltti himself. Alonia hoped that seeing her perform it would help form a bond between herself and her partner.

Alonia made her way out of the camp and walked until she found a clearing well out of sight from the rest of the camp. She didn't check to see if Ezera had chosen to follow her, if she did not wish to witness then it was her choice, and Alonia could not stop her from making that decision. She walked in to the middle of the clearing, sitting cross legged and pressing her hooves together in front of her.

From this position, Alonia could feel everything land had to offer her. She could feel the wind flow through the trees, passing through her short hair and blowing it around wildly. She could hear every herb speaking to her, telling her what each and every one of them was capable of from the deadliest of poisons, to plants that could stop any kind of bleeding. She could feel the small cracks in the earth caused buy the roots breaking through it, her senses touching every single broken spot, feeling the minerals and calling to them. She could sense the water buried deep underground, there wasn't much, but she could feel it shift under the small movements of the earth.

She could feel everything, and everything around her could feel her presence. Alonia then opened her eyes, her pupils dilated to the point that it covered the entirety of her exposed lens with darkness. Suddenly, the wind, the earth, the water, small and large parts all around her all cried out to her as their master. Then, a small ball of earth rose from the ground and levitated in front of her. The ball of earth was then surrounded by small streams of water and a concentrated circle of air, each rotating around the ball of earth quickly as it floated in the air.

Alonia then blinked a few times as the ball and the everything else came crashing down, "I was able to control almost everything I can back at home," she said to herself and anyone else who happened to e listening, "Everything but heat and any sort of fire. It seems the Sun does answer to the Princess while it passes over this part of the world. She is far more powerful than me and the sun refuses to grant me its power while we walk on this ground."

Ezera nodded to Tinago, now she had a partner, while that would help majorly in their goals she felt it also as a hindrance as she wouldn't be able to act as she truly pleased. But to anyone else someone to keep Ezera restrained in any way was a good idea, her moving freely won't end well, especially in this place where no rules applied to her.

This Shaman pony exited the tent, and went off into the woods. Ezera knew about the ties between Zebras and the earth were quite strong, but her herself never capitalized on them, or really thought about there importance. It never really came up in her whole life, so it did lack importance to her, but knowing and understanding are two completely different things.

So she simply followed her companion, just to acquire some kind of ground with her, their alliance would allow them to succeed after all. "That was quite something," she said to Alonia, trotting over as she finished, "I hope that will come of important use to us on our mission."

Alonia nodded to her partner, "Yes, me being able to actually use my abilities will come in very useful in our travels," she said as she made her way out of the clearing and out towards the road that would lead them to Ponyville, "We should get going, I assume that you're fully prepared for the journey ahead of us, Ezera."

Alonia didn't know much about the Zebra she was going to be working with. All that she knew for sure was that Ezera was a hybrid, a mix of Unicorn and Zebra blood, the magic from the ponies and the strength of her people. It seemed that a mix like that would make quite the powerful combination in combat. "So," the Shaman said as she walked down the road, "What made you join the war effort? I can see that you have the build of a warrior, and you were the one who Tinago put in charge of this mission, so he must trust you, but I would like to know why. If that is not too much to ask of course."

Ezera was already set to leave, since she didn't need to carry much of anything that wasn't already with her. The main source of her power, and more important her weapon, magic, and the map given to her from Tinago, which was something of no importance to Ezera, seeing as she already memorized their path to Ponyville. "I've been set for a while, let's be on our way."

Now normally Ezera would act more crude, more unpleasing and difficult to anyone she was with. But this was a special case, she had to travel with, what was in her eyes, a powerful pureblood shaman, and her impression she left on her was vital. "Yes I have somewhat of a reputation as a warrior, as much as it seems like I am not one. As for him putting me in charge," Ezera paused for a moment, thinking as to really why he chose her, "It might possibly because I have been a leader on multiple occasions, I use to be a mercenary, so my mettle has been tested before.

But joining this war. This war I saw as something new, something different than just mercenary work. I needed a change and I wanted a real battle to fight, so I returned home and immediately made my way out here. I won't lie to you." She looked to Alonia, giving her a look over ebfore speaking again. "I am probably one of a few Zebra's that enjoy battle. It excites me. The honour and glory that comes with it, especially fighting for our homeland." Ezera was glad with herself internally, being honest was a good step towards a pleasant relationship.

"What is the reason for your conscription?"

Alonia nodded at her partner's explanations. It seemed that her partner was more than qualified to lead this mission, and it seemed like each of her answers were honest, a wise decision. They were going to be on the road together for an unknown amount of time, it would be vitally important to form some sort of bond while they were on the road. Nothing was more important in a combat situation than knowing that you can trust the Zebra that has your back.

"I joined the war effort for a variety of reasons," Alonia said as she began her tale, "The main one being that I was chosen by the High Shaman to represent my order in the invasion. Other orders have joined as well, and I have met and spoken with all of them," she said with a sigh, "They are old and wise and each of them will be useful as a powerful support to our troops in the battles ahead. However, their age will keep them from the majority of the battles and they will be considered an asset as healers rather than combatants.

"My order chose me, not because I am the strongest among them, but because I am the most versatile. I am younger, swifter, and more hardened by life than the others. I have been forced to master all forms of combative magics as living as a lone female in Zebrica is dangerous for many reasons. Predators are frequent, some tribes see me as a threat and wish me killed, and the threat of men who would forcibly take me into their bed is something that has not left my mind.

"Because of this, I have become hardened and experienced in combat, not through battle, but through life as a lone wanderer who wants nothing more than to treat the sick and the injured whoever they may be," Alonia said as she finished her explanation.

"I am like you in the way that I am happy to be here, to represent my country and my order," the Shaman said, "However, we are also different. Unlike you, I do not seek glorious battle. I fight only to preserve my life and my way of life. Do not think this means that I will not help you in the heat of battle. I know that almost every pony we meet will wish us harm and I will not show them mercy."

"We have different philosophies." Ezera stated fully knowing combat won't be an issue, although in the pit of her stomach she was doubtful. Not of her ability, or that she would, just that when it came down to it, was she fully prepared? Ezera would go to the fullest of her abilities, as punishing as they were, they might seem extreme to her, even if Alonia herself says she will not show mercy. A shaman that was open to killing any opposition seemed off in Ezera's head, but her thoughts and objections were swallowed, their trust must remain intact.

"I see your reasoning, being a shaman has shaped you differently. And I do not doubt your fighting skills. These ponies maybe peaceful and kind in their everyday lives, but I do not believe that lie. They masquerade around in it, waiting to kill us all. Their annihilation shall be most satisfying."

Alonia sighed, "While the conquest of this nation is something I am willing to be a part of," she said as she turned to her partner, "I do not believe that genocide is the answer. We do not need to purge the Ponyfolk from the face of the planet, we simply need to remove them from a state of power."

Being a Shaman, Alonia had taken part in some politics in her days. It was never a permanent thing, but sometimes a delegation required someone from outside their circle of politicians and they usually turned to the nearest Shaman. These debates often came down to what Equestria would do if the motion would pass, how it would change the relationship between Zebrica and them. "They're the most powerful nation in the world because of their military and the Princesses. We have already rendered their military might considerably weaker than it usually is because of this three front war. Now all we have to do it take the Princesses off of their seats of power. If they no longer have control over the Sun and the Moon, the ponies will have to adapt to a world that does not bend to their every whim. If we destroy the Princesses, we will set this land free, and if we set this land free, then we have won."
