"That which was born in fire... shall continue to be born in fire, forever..." - excerpt from the book of Ire, A documentation of strange and mythical beasts throughout the world.

A phoenix is, to put it as simply as possible, a bird of fire. They are creatures that, as the old legends tell us, come from volcanoes. Though current phoenixes come from eggs, it will never be truly known where the first phoenix originated from. However, the legends say that it burst from a volcano in a pillar of fire, then nestled into the next volcano it found and caused it to erupt.

A phoenix is immortal , with many life and death cycles in-between. A single phoenix life cycle lasts around 500 years, during which it slowly sheds all its feathers. Once all its feathers are gone, the phoenix will burst into flames and become ashes. Soon thereafter, the ashes themselves will rise into the air and burst into flames, regenerating that phoenix. A phoenix can die before its full life is over if it is wounded enough. however, they can force shed all their feathers and end the current life cycle to save themselves, at the cost of all the remaining years they have in that life cycle.

Phoenix mating season comes around every 35 years in the spring. However, mates are much harder to find since both the male and female are only fertile in its first life and death cycle. The eggs must remain as eggs for nearly 35 years before hatching and must have a constant heat over them, otherwise the phoenix inside them will die. Eggs are typically a bright yellow with orange fire rising up from the larger end to the smaller end. The eggs, however, are very fragile, and will break if enough pressure is applied. It is well known that Equestrian teenage dragons make a sport out of smashing the eggs.

The body is that of a natural bird physiology, with one major difference; The body of a phoenix can channel energy into their feathers. the feathers, when this energy is being channeled into them, can provide the fire, heat, and light that a phoenix can call upon at will. The feathers have no actual magicals properties. However, when the feather is shed it will lose any energy inside it. The only way for a phoenix feather to keep its magical properties after leaving the body is for the phoenix to pluck it itself and willingly give it to another being. This is an exceedingly rare event, as most phoenixes would rather play tricks on ponies rather than give them their precious feathers. It is important to note that taking the feather forcefully off of the pheonix will negate its magical efects as well. To acquire a feather, one must have done something extraordinary, and they are not very easy to impress.

There are a couple of differences between male and female phoenixes. The first and most obvious in middle-aged birds is the purple coloring on their chest feathers and the semi-purple plumes coming from the tip of their head. However, as the female phoenix ages, it grows slightly bigger with each death cycle and loses both its difference to the male, whereas the male only grows slightly bigger until death. When a male phoenix becomes identical to a female they can no longer mate. This tends to happen around the 1500 year mark, though this has not been verified.

The behavior of a phoenix is currently unknown, as there is little to no documentation on them, despite their age.

A phoenix has a couple of abilities. They can create heat, fire, and light from their bodies all from the energy they get from their feathers. They can light their bodies almost completely on fire, with the exception of the head. A phoenix body, due to this, has a extraordinary resistance to any kind of fire. Phoenixes can also emanate a large, blinding burst of light from their bodies. The light is strong enough to temporaily blind those that see it. They can also dim the fire to a very low level, creating a large amount of heat in a surrounding area. Though they can dim the fire, they cannot stop it. Their wings will always have embers dancing on them.

Probably the most interesting feature of the phoenix is their tear. If a phoenix releases a single tear, is has enormous magical effects on anyone who ingests it. Such effects are usually being able to heal even the most grievous wound. Any mortal wound can be healed with a single phoenix tear, regardless of the injury. Phoenix tears are extremely rare though, as most phoenixes do not ever cry and their tears usually fall into the gruond, dissapearing forever.

Another interesting feature of the phoenix is its feathers. Phoenix feathers are generally crimson in color, and are rumored to grant the user immortality; however, this has been proven false. There are no actual properties that a phoenix feather can give to another being, svae for heat. The feathers have an energy that is channeled through them so as to make them emit a flame. The intensity of this flams can be changed at will, so it is wise not to anger the phoenix, as the flames can become quite large. Should a feather leave the phoenix, it will become completely useless and lose all its energy. Phoenixes, due to these feathers are naturally warm animals.
