Throughout the land of Equestria, there have been many creatures that bear striking resemblances to ponies, such as the Sea Pony, the Changelings, and the Crystal Ponies. One such creature is the Flutter Pony, a forest-dwelling subspecies of ponykind. If one were to judge by appearances, flutter ponies look like any other pony, however they are generally thin and lanky, a detail often overlooked by the much more obvious translucent, butterfly-like wings. This wings can lift a flutter pony into the air roughly 15-20 feet, but they are incapable of sustained flight, and every so often (about one week every three months) they must be shed and regrown.

Flutter ponies are generally kind, however they are reclusive and prefer to stay with others of their kind. The only known colony is in Whitetail Wood. While the flutter ponies respect the royal princesses, their single loyalty is to their queen, who is responsible for the well-being of all the flutter ponies and as such serves as a liason between her colony and the rest of Equestria. It is this colony's job to keep Whitetail Wood clean and beautiful throughout the spring, summer, and autumn, but they must leave during the winter to migrate to a warmer climate. It can be assumed that there are many more colonies of Flutter Ponies, but Whitetail Wood is the only known location - the autumnal Running of the Leaves and the number of ponies it brings to the Wood may have something to do with this.

As a last-resort self-defense mechanism, a flutter pony can speed up his or her wings into overdrive for a number of seconds. This action, called Utter Flutter, produces strong gusts and is capable of dispelling certain types of evil magic, however the strain on the wings could cause semi-permanent damage and generally leaves the Flutter pony exhausted. For this reason Flutter ponies are usually forbidden from using it unless ordered to en masse by the queen.

As the Flutter Ponies' wings are hard to see at a distance and their body bears such a slight difference to an earth pony's, reported sightings are few and far between, even if the number of instances in which a pony was unaware of what they were seeing may be higher than expected.
