Crimson was a little surprised to hear that Rose hadn't flown like that at all before. She had managed to keep up with him just fine without practicing at all; did that mean he was slipping, or was she just that good without knowing it? It was probably that she was just that good, if her dad's wings really were that weak. So Crimson watched Rose for a moment as she talked, now with a bit of renewed respect for her. Maybe he could get her to like flying faster more while he still lived in Ponyville!

Just as he was about to comment on that line of thought, Rose spoke up again, asking a question that Crimson hadn't really been expecting. He'd hoped for the time being that she hadn't noticed or had forgotten all about the fact that he didn't say anything about his parents, but there she was, asking if they liked hearing about him and his flying. Awkwardly, Crimson scratched at his chest as he avoided her eye contact for a moment. "Not really," he responded a little distantly, still inspecting something just to Rose's side. "They usually have better things to do. We mostly just do our own things, and that's how it's always been."

He turned his gaze back to Rose after that, quickly continuing on. "You sound like you've got a really awesome family; you think I could meet them some time? I wanna see the swords you said your parents have! I've never seen a sword u--" Crimson's words were cut short as some of the other kids in his class came up, all trying to talk at once, but the general message of their words was them cheering Rose and Crimson on for the race and how awesome it was to watch.

Grinning and feeling good about himself, Crimson laughed at their words before taking on a victroy pose. "Thanks, everypony!" Crimson said to the small crowd that had come up to him and Rose. "It was a fun race; I haven't flown like that in a long time! But Rose's the real winner though. I'm not sure how, but she beat me!" Turning his grin to her, he gave Rose a playful shove before stamping his hooves on the ground, eliciting a similar reaction from the other colts and fillies nearby.

Rose watched Crimson intently as he told of how his parents would react to his amazing flying. What he said made her frown, feeling sympathetic towards him suddenly. His parents never had time for him? That sounded absolutely horrible to her. She could never once think of one time where she walked up to her parents to ask something of them and they just brush her off, saying that they had better things to do. They were parents that cared, and she was proud and happy to call them her mum and dad. To not have them would be... very sad.

He quickly changed the topic after that, going back to discussing her family, and she nodded along to his comments, still thinking about how his family paid no attention to him, and how lucky she was to have a family like hers. When he said he wanted to meet them, her attention snapped back to him and an idea started to form in her head, a very vague idea, but it was something nonetheless. What if she did take him to meet her family? They would definitely be nice to him, maybe he can get a chance to experience what a good parent could be like?

She nodded to him but before she could say anything else, the two of them were rushed by a good majority of the children around the playground, all trying to talk over each other and congratulate the both of them. Suddenly Crimson took on a proud victory pose, thanking everypony for their kind words, but then congratulating Rose for the victory. Did she actually win? She was too busy trying not to mess up her landing to notice. He then gave her a playful shove, and she rubbed her shoulder bashfully, giving him a nervous smile as she looked around at all the other ponies practically yelling their praise to her.

After a few seconds of basking in their praises and cheers, Rose called out, "But we all know who the real winner is here, right? Who else could have done such fancy flying in the middle of a race like that, and still make the race so close that I couldn't even tell who won? Nah, it was totally Crimson that won this one, if only because he looks so awesome while doing it!" She walked over and threw a leg around his shoulder, while kicking at the air with her other one, giving a loud cheer that everypony around her matched.

When everypony started to calm down, Rose took the time to whisper in Crimson's ear, "I had so much fun racing you Crimson, really. I definitely want to show you to my family too, I'll have to ask if you can maybe stay for supper too, that is if your mum and dad are okay with that--" She was interrupted as the school bell started to ring, signalling the end of the recess. Miss Cheerilee stood outside the back door, waving for all the children to come back inside, looking over at Rose and Crimson with a very strange smile before ushering a few more children inside.

Letting go of Crimson, she started trotting back to the schoolhouse with him, rejuvenated and awake from the physical activity that the recess gave her, chatting idly with her new colt friend, "You're gonna have to show me how to fly like that one day too! Doing all those somersaults and spins and loop-de-loops and all that must be so thrilling!" They passed by Miss Cheerilee on the way inside and she commented to Crimson with a wide and cheery smile, "Glad to see you are making friends Crimson!"

Walking back to her desk, Rose sat down and looked at a few of the math equations on the board, sighing heavily as she pulled out her math notebook. This was going to be a long and boring class...

Crimson's stampede-applause for Rose cut short as the filly called out to the crowd around them, this time turning the praise over to Crimson instead. While the grin on his face spread wider to mirror the pride he felt inside, thoughy he lifted a hoof to wave it dismissively in the air. "That was nothing!" he said, trying in vain to be humble about the situation. "Anypony could do what I did!"

Still, it felt good to be praised for pulling off the tricks that he did, felt good to know his practicing wasn't in vain, especially when Rose threw a leg around his shoulder and started to cheer for Crimson. Chuckling to himself, he looked out over the crowd, wings still flared out proudly until he felt Rose press closer to him and heard her whisper in his ear. His wings faltered slightly, awkwardly shrinking back to his body as a result of being unsure of what to do in the situation; he'd never had a filly that close to him before.

What she said was exciting though: she agreed to let him meet her family, and even see if he could stay for dinner as well. If he could, that would just mean less time he'd have to spend around them, and less time they'd have to see him. It was a benefit for everypony. Unfortunately, Rose was cut short as the end-of-recess bell began to ring. A little disappointed, Crimson gave a quiet sigh before following Rose back to the schoolhouse, not looking forward to what they were going back to, even though the little race with Rose had given him another burst of energy and nothing to burn it on. "I could definitely teach you how to fly like that some time. It takes a lot of practice, but it gets easier once you get a few basics down."

Crimson paused momentarily as they passed by Cheerilee, offering her a somewhat forced smile when she mentioned it was nice to see him making friends. Not so much making a friend as somepony that could help pass the time until he had to leave again... "But we can probably save that for another day or something," Crimson continued after walking past Cheerilee. "Maybe after I find a good spot for us to practice at."

Then, it was time to continue class. Reluctant to begin, Crimson slinked back into his desk, wishing once more that he and Rose could exchange notes again. He knew that would be a little hard to do at this point, though, so instead he just had to power through it, a bored expression on his face as he stared forward, barely even paying any attention to what Cheerilee was trying to teach, especially since it was a lesson he'd already learned.

After what felt like a dreadfully long time the bell rang once more, signaling the end of the school day. As the other colts and fillies excitedly hopped out of their desks and crowded to the doorway with Cheerilee trying to talk over them and remind them all of something or another, Crimson began stuffing his things back into his saddlebags and rubbing the sleepiness out of his eyes. Once he'd done that he slid out of his seat as well, then began trying to file out of the door with the rest of the children. As he did so he caught sight of Rose's sister just sitting in her desk, still staring out of the window she sat next to with a blank expression. She'd heard the bell, right? Why wasn't she moving? Was she in some kind of trouble?

Frowning a bit in thought, he made his way outside before standing somewhere off to the side and waiting for Rose to approach. When she did, Crimson offered a wave and a grin to her before saying, "So where're we goin' first? Maybe you can show me some of your favorite spots first? Or any cool places you've found?" He paused then and glanced over to one of the schoolhouse's windows. "I also didn't see your sister get out of her seat when the bell rang. Do you think she got in some kind of trouble?"

Finally, the bell that ended class for the day rang, and Rose looked up from her notes that were adorned with various doodles at the clock. It was finally time to leave class, and she was among on of the first to finish packing up, sweeping all of her books into her saddlebags without a care for how they sat against each other, slinging the bag over her back, following Crimson as he made his way to the coat room with her before they left.

It was the usual kerfuffle involved with the end of the day stuff. The line was packed like a can of sardines, and there was a slow pushing coming from those students in the back to try to hasten everypony else through the door. Once that was done and she was outside, she looked around for that familiar brown colt, hoping that he hadn't run off and forgot about what they were going to do this afternoon. When she did see his grinning face, she matched it and excitedly trotted over to him, ecstatic to show him around the town.

She paused when he asked about her sister staying behind, and she too glanced back at the schoolhouse windows, giving a little hum in thought before saying, "Honey does that pretty much every day. I think she just likes to wait for everypony else to leave to avoid the pushing and shoving, but sometimes she likes to ask the teacher for extra help or something. I usually wait for her here, but since I'm gonna be showing you around, we can leave. She is going to tell my mum and dad that I won't be home around the usual time anyway."

Ruffling her wings against her body, she turned to Crimson and said a little more light-heartedly, "Anyway, let's get going! There's a whole bunch of places I want to show you before we go back to my house, so we should get going." With that, she started to lead the way further into town, a colt and a filly walking side by side looking as though they just came from school together. A few passing ponies turned their heads to see the two of them walking down the street together, giving little smiles as their own memories from that age came back to them.

It wasn't long before they reached the Sugarcube Corner, and Rose gestured to the incredibly decorative and themed building before walking up to the door, "This is Sugarcube Corner! My favourite place to go for something sweet tasting! I'd be willing to bet there is no other place in Equestria that makes cupcakes and cookies and everything else better than Mr. and Mrs. Cake! Come on, I'll introduce you to them!"

She pushed the door open and walked inside, and immediately the pleasant smell of baked good beset them. Taking a deep breath, Rosy walked up to one of the display cases and started looking at some of the baked goods that were on sale with wide eyes and a growling stomach. Cheesecakes, donuts, cookies, eclairs, cupcakes, muffins, pretty much every single baked good ever conceived was sitting in these display cases, looking beautifully delicious.

From behind the counter a slightly more rounded mare looked over to the both of them and said in a funny and cheery little accent, "Oh, well hello there dearies! Anythin' I can help ya get today?" Rose looked up at the mare, matching the cheery smile as she nudged Crimson a bit, "Hiya Mrs. Cake! Just showing Crimson around town! He just moved here a while ago, so he's pretty new."

At this, Mrs. Cake turned to Crimson and offered him another smile, saying, "Oh! I was wonderin' why I couldn't remember your face from around these parts, Crimson! Hang on a second there, deary..." She ducked behind the counter and removed a cupcake that was covered in sugary frosting, placing it on the counter before saying, "There ya go! A little 'Welcome to Ponyville' present from Mr. Cake and me. I would tell him to come out and say hello to ya too, but he's on a delivery right now."

Rose looked at the cupcake that was placed on the counter for Crimson and immediately her mouth started to water. Her lust for that cupcake must have taken a toll on her vision too, as pretty soon she started to see double as another cupcake materialized beside it, and she could hear Mrs. Cake saying again, "... and for you little miss Rosy, since I think you both look so cute together~. Go have a seat for a bit and relax, not often we see such an adorable pair like you two here when it's not Hearts and Hooves day!"

As soon as she heard this, Rose glanced back up at Mrs. Cake, her cheeks flushing bright red as a nervous smile spread across her face, scooping up her cupcake alongside Crimson before going to sit down in a booth, glancing up at him shyly before trying to say something to break the nervous silence, "Eh heh... go ahead and try it! Mrs. Cake really knows how to make them taste like the best things in the world!" She paused for a bit to have a taste of her own cupcake before continuing with a nervous laugh, "... kinda funny that she thinks we were coltfriend and marefriend, huh?"

After Rose explained why her sister Honey hadn't bothered getting out of her seat like everypony else, Crimson gave a slight shrug. It made enough sense, he supposed, though he didn't know why she'd want to stay around the school any longer than she had to and see if there was anything she could do to help the teacher. That was her job, right? So she had to be able to take care of all that stuff on her own, or else there'd be somepony else working to help her.

Rose then mentioned going to see all the places she wanted to show him, and Crimson gave a nod as he mirrored her ruffling of her wings by doing the same. He was a little excited to see what Rose had to show him--he'd heard a few rumors about this place and how it was a friendly and colorful place, and Crimson wanted to see if those rumors were true. So far, they were; unlike in the cities he'd been to, all kinds of ponies were interacting with each other, and all of the buildings seemed warm and inviting.

Especially the building Rose eventually led them to: Sugarcube Corner as she called it. It was definitely a pretty cheery looking place and he could see just by the way it looked why Rose enjoyed this place so much, not to mention the whole 'best sweets in Equestria' part. That just made Crimson more excited, though: there had to be some truth to what Rose said, or else she wouldn't think what she did. So looking forward to see if this place could meet his expectations, Crimson followed Rose inside and looked around as they approached the counter.

While the rest of the bakery was just as impressive as it was on the outside, what really caught his eye was what was in front of them now: a glass case, filled with all kinds of different treats and such, ranging from simple baked goods to stuff like eclairs, cinnamon twists... anything that anypony could desire. Just looking at the treats made his mouth water, but it also made him realize he had no money. His parents never gave him any kind of allowance, and he'd spent anything he'd earned or found back before leaving Baltimare...

So all he could do was just stare enviously, even as somepony from behind the counter spoke to them, asking if there was anything they wanted. He could name a lot of things in front of him that he wanted but nothing that he'd actually be able to get, so instead of opening his mouth and seeming needy he just let Rose talk as he continued to look at each treat in front of him. Only when the mare behind the counter addressed him did Crimson turn his gaze away from the counter so he could give a friendly, if a bit awkward, smile to her.

That smile turned to shock when she ducked behind the counter to remove a cupcake and then offer it directly to Crimson as a welcome to town present. In awe, he reached forward and took the cupcake in a hoof, holding it reverently as his mouth began to water again. "Thank you so much, uh... Mrs. Cake!" he cheered, offering the mare behind the counter a toothy grin. "This looks really tasty! I can't wait to try it." That grin faltered slightly when Mrs. Cake mentioned thinking they looked cute together, and how she didn't see a pair like them when it wasn't Hearts and Hooves day.

Crimson could feel his cheeks brighten a little bit as his wings stiffly readjusted themselves at his back. But they weren't... together... why did she think that? Awkwardly, Crimson followed Rose over to a booth where he sat across from her, nervously trying his best to avoid making eye contact with her, the silence that ensued not making matters any better. It wasn't until Rose gave a nervous laugh and encouraged him to try his cupcake. Giving a similar laugh, Crimson lifted the cupcake up to his mouth and took a bite of it. Even as unsure of himself as he was at the moment, he had to admit that Rose was right: Mrs. Cake really did make a pretty good cupcake.

When Rose gave another nervous laugh, Crimson glanced back to her over his cupcake, only to return her laugh in kind as he idly peeled back some of the paper surrounding the bottom of his cupcake. "Uh.. yeah, heh. That was kind of funny. I haven't even been here a day yet, and we haven't been doing anything but hanging out with each other, so I don't know how she could think that..."

Crimson took a bite from his cupcake after that to bide his time and try and think of something to say. When that happened he swallowed what was still in his mouth before glancing back over to Rose again, now starting to have second thoughts about asking his question. "So, uh.. does... do things like that happen often for you?"

Rose took another bite of her cupcake, not exactly savouring the flavour all too well. It was hard to do, especially with just how good they tasted. What little self-control she had went into trying to prolong the existence of this poor cupcake that she was devouring, and even then, it lasted maybe all of one minute before it was gone, frosting and all, the only thing left to justify its previous existence was the little paper that wrapped up the bottom, covered in crumbs and other little pieces of the cupcake that were stuck to it.

As she propped her forelegs up on the table, reminiscing on just how good the cupcake was as she fished around in her mouth with her tongue for little bits that may have been hiding in her teeth. She nodded as he said that the only things that they had been doing together had been hanging out, responding immediately with, "Yeah, I mean, it's not like we're dating or nothing, we're just hanging out. I think Mrs. Cake was just teasing us really, unless she thought we really did look cute together." She paused for a second before quickly adding, "That doesn't mean we're together though! Oh no no no, just friends, right?"

He then took a bite and looked like he was about to ask something he might regret, and she listened carefully to the question that seemed innocent enough. It wasn't really specific though, so she had to assume it was probably about the free cupcakes. Planting a hoof under her chin, she looked up at the ceiling and mused, "Hmmm... nah, not really. Every time I ask for a cupcake, Mrs. Cake asks for money in exchange, and it's only on reeeeally special occasions that she would give one to me, like if it was my birthday or something- she's really good at remembering that by the way, there is this one mare that works here, she's pink and she specializes in planning and throwing parties of all kinds, and I don't know how she does it, but she could remember everypony's name, birthday, and whatever they could possibly be celebrating. It's pretty awesome but kinda creepy sometimes."

Rose leaned forward and looked around as if to make sure that no pony was watching them before saying, "I wouldn't be surprised if she was planning on throwing a surprise "Welcome to Ponyville" party for ya, just a heads up. Now what was I talking about again?" She tapped a hoof to her chin and hummed in thought before exclaiming, "Oh right! If things like that usually happen! Well, no. I'm usually hanging around with another filly or my sister, so that is what other ponies are used to seeing around me. This is probably the first time they've seen me with another colt because most colts just... ya know, spend time with other colts their age and play soccer or race or do other things like that..."

She looked off in the distance for a bit in thought before continuing in a more curious tone, "Actually, you are probably the first colt that has ever wanted to hang out with me, and the first one that I've wanted to hang out with. We both like pretty much the same things, and I'd like to think that we are friends, if you are okay with that that is. Did you usually hang around other fillies back in Baltimare or any of the other cities you've lived in? How is your cupcake by the way?"

Crimson's self-control lasted little longer than Rose's had. Just a few more bites of the cupcake, and it was completely gone, save for the wrapper and the crumbs that always somehow managed to stick on there. So all he had to look at while Rose misunderstood him and responded to something he hadn't been referring to was the empty wrapper and the tale it told of tasty treats.

At least he knew now that Mrs. Cake never did things like this on a regular basis. It was a little disappointing, but now he wouldn't make an idiot of himself in the future. What made him pause, though, was the pink mare that Rose mentioned. Was she really that good at remembering things like pony's birthdays? His own birthday had barely been remembered as it was; how could some mare he didn't even know do that...? And she was already throwing a welcome to Ponyville party? Crimson sank back in his seat at the booth, silently dreading the idea of that.

Immediately after sharing the news of the pink pony's plans, Rose finally answered the question he'd really asked: if she was always mistaken for being together with colts she hung out with. The answer was a resounding no, simply for the fact that she never hung around colts. Although if the reason Mrs. Cake seemed to think they were a pair was because Rose was never with colts, maybe it wasn't so bad in the end. It would get better eventually once they got used to the sight and saw they weren't together, right?

When Rose asked if Crimson spent time with other fillies back in Baltimare, Crimson's gaze moved down to the table briefly. "My cupcake was good. You know how I mentioned I've lived in more cities than just Baltimare? Well, when you move around like that a lot, there's not really much room in the way of keeping friends, much less making them. So no, I didn't really hang out with any fillies when I was in Baltimare... or any other place, really. It was always just easier to entertain myself until my parents made us move again."

He sighed quietly at that and raised a hoof to scratch behind an ear. "I mean... I guess we can be friends, but I don't know how long I'll be here. I've enjoyed hanging out with you, and I guess I wouldn't really mind still doing that, but... It's just going to make it harder when or if I have to leave again."

Rose glanced down at the table as Crimson detailed how he couldn't really keep many friends because he was constantly moving around all the time. It made her wonder just what it would be like if she didn't have Honey, any of her friends, or parents that cared for what she was doing. Her thoughts led to only an imagining of herself just sitting on her bed, maybe tossing a ball against a wall or humming sad tunes to herself. It would be more like a prison to her than a way of living. How could Crimson just keep living like that?

She looked up again and offered Crimson another smile, not exactly excited at the thought that he might be leaving sometime in the year that is not really known, but didn't that just give her reason to try to spend as much time getting to know him as possible? Sure it might make it a little harder when and if he had to leave again, but they'd be better with the memories they had, and who knows, maybe they would see each other again down the road.

"Well, I do still want to call you a friend! You are a pretty awesome guy, and I like hanging out with you, and if you are going to leave sometime you don't know when, then I guess we just have to get as much hanging out done as possible, maaaaaaybe your parents will want to stay in Ponyville this time around...?" She shrugged as her voice trailed off. It wasn't really his choice, unfortunately. The fate of their friendship depended entirely on what his parents were doing.

Wanting to change the subject off of something that wasn't that depressing, she looked at the empty cupcake wrappers and said, "So... yeah, this is the Sugarcube Corner! It's always nice to come here every once in a while with some allowance and get a slice of cake or something. Maybe we could come back her again someday! I'm sure you'd rather see some more of the town though, so let's go to my next favourite spot!" She stood up suddenly, cleaning the wrappers off the table and into a garbage can before walking to the door.

Turning around and gesturing excitedly for him to follow, she opened the door and said, "Come on! We've only got so long before my mum starts looking for me, no matter what my sis tells her." They then hurried out of the establishment, Mrs. Cake smiling and shaking her head as they left, no doubt caught up in memories of her own childhood as she watched the two of them leave.

Rose led the way towards the edge of town, glancing back at him every so often to make sure he was still following her, "Ponyville's really small compared to some of the other towns like Salt Lick City, so it's pretty easy to get around. There's the town centre and the stream that runs by it, there's a huuuuuge apple orchard just over that way, pretty much just as big as the town that's pretty fun to wander around in if you don't let Miss Applejack catch ya, maybe we could wander around there some other time."

They soon came across a small pond, the water relatively undisturbed with a tree growing right beside it. On one of the larger branches growing out over the body of water was a rope swing with a small plank of wood just to sit on. There weren't any ponies swimming about in the water at this time, so it was a calm and peaceful place to be for now. Ruffling her feathers against her body, she looked around before going to sit under the tree for a bit, "This is the pond, really fun place to go in the summer to cool off, but it's still a little chilly outside so I don't think a swim would be good right now, but yeah!"

Sitting for a little while before looking out over the pond, she sighed and then asked, "So what do your parents do that they need to move around so much? Do they have some sort of job that involves travel or something? I can't imagine having to relocate so many times. Do they ever ask you if you want to stay? I can't imagine what it is like going around without anypony to really call a friend..."

Crimson gave a small half-smile as Rose talked about liking hanging out with him, and thinking he was a pretty awesome colt. The smile faded a bit, however, when Rose mentioned the possibility of his parents wanting to say in Ponyville this time. Crimson wasn't very convinced of that: there was no way he could talk them into staying if they ever wanted to leave, which he wouldn't doubt was in his future.

Rose then summed up Sugarcube Corner and suggested they go to her next favorite spot. Crimson nodded in agreement and slid out of the booth as Rose gathered the wrappers and dropped them in the trash can before leading the way back outside. There seemed to be a little more urgency to her as she explained how they didn't seem to have very long before her mother started looking for her. Crimson just nodded to her, and suitably followed pace behind her as she moved a bit more quickly through the streets of Ponyville.

When Rose began talking about the huge apple orchard, Crimson turned his gaze over to where she gestured. He'd seen the apple trees she was talking about, but was there really more? That was amazing, if so. There must have been so many ponies working on that farm, if they had to get that many apples down every year. Which meant sneaking in there would be a challenge... and really fun. "Let's do it sometime," Crimson agreed to Rose's proposal of wandering around the orchard. "Who knows what we could find in a place as big as that?"

Shortly after, Rose led them to a small pond at the edge of town with a large tree growing at its edge, even complete with a swing that ponies could use to jump into the water. If it weren't so chilly out, Crimson might have immediately ran to the swing and jumped on... but he didn't really want to be cold, wet and miserable. Instead, he just joined Rose beside the tree and watched the pond below as the surface of the water slowly rippled. It was peaceful, and Crimson could see why Rose liked the spot.

It was quiet, and slowly Crimson started to space out as he lost himself in the moment, before he was brought back to reality as Rose began talking again. Wincing at her questions, Crimson continued staring down at the water before him, reluctant to even answer. "It was hard at first, but... it's just how things have always been, so I guess I'm used to it. I've gotten good at keeping myself entertained when there was nopony else to do so with. As for if they ask me: not really. The first time we moved I asked why, and they told me because of their job. After that... I guess I just stopped caring. I'm still not even sure what my dad does, but... At the same time, I don't really want to. I know it wouldn't change anything."

He sighed at that before finally looking over to Rose, a bit of a reluctant look on his face. "I don't like talking about them. They barely have enough time for me, and they know I don't like moving to different cities this much. So I try to stay away from them and the houses we've lived in as much as I can. It's just been easier that way. Probably for them, too, but I don't know. Either way, I don't want to talk about them any more." He slowly rubbed his chest after that, quietly thinking of a different direction to take the conversation.

"So you say you can sing good?" He said after a moment of silence on his part. "Is this a place you go when you want to come up with a new song, or to just sing in general? And have you come up with any songs on your own? More importantly... do you think you'd be willing to sing for me, so I can see if you're as good as you say you are?" Crimson asked, offering a teasing grin to Rose.

As Rose leaned against the tree, she listened to Crimson answer her questions. This was always a nice place to come and relax when there was nothing else to do in the day, just come here and sit for a half an hour and daydream, think of a song, or have a nap. Now she was here listening to Crimson's troubles, trying to think of some way that she could help him see things from a better perspective, but she probably didn't even know half of the troubles he was having, so how could she just tell him to smile and move on?

She did want to help him feel a little better though, and she looked over to him and smiled, "Well, don't let that keep you from trying to make friends, Crimson. Sure it might be even harder when you have to leave, but wouldn't you rather have good memories to look back to than memories of you just being alone? I know I'd want to spend time with you if you want to be my friend, so I think we should make some sort of promise to each other to try to make the most of it while we have time, huh? I think to get things started, we should definitely look into wandering around the apple orchard. I don't think the farmhands would mind us if we didn't take any of the apples anyway... maybe just one each, they are pretty good apples."

When Crimson asked her about her singing, she grinned and replied, "I like to think I sing good! My sister likes to play her violin with me, and my mum and dad like to listen to us play, so we must be good. Unless of course it is just our mum and dad putting up with us because we're their daughters, but other ponies like to listen to us sing too, so we can't be that bad."

She glanced over at Crimson and continued, kicking her legs aimlessly, "I don't usually come here to sing or think up songs though. I really only come here to swim or to daydream, but I don't see why I can't sing for you right now. Not very often that I get requests from other ponies, even less from a colt, so I can't really turn you down." She cleared her throat and thought for a few seconds before singing.

"I owe you, don't I?
a little light today
but tomorrow, oh tomorrow
I owe you, don't I?
I know it ain't the money girl
there never was money.

This usury so typical
a piece of you for a piece of me
it's hard coded
a piece of you for a piece of me

And it's alright
Let's call it good
A little more
Let's make this even."

As she let the last note ring out through the otherwise quiet air, she looked over at Crimson again and smiled again, only this time her cheeks discolouring red a little. She hadn't sang like that for anypony before, not even a colt like Crimson who had asked her, and she honestly half expected him to brush it off as some girly thing to do or maybe laugh at her for the way her voice sounded. Bashfully looking at him and tracing a hoof in the dirt, she asked hesitantly, "Well... uh... did that leave you on a high note, so to speak?"

Apparently the place wasn't for Rose to get inspiration out of. From his seat beside Rose, he slowly sank down onto the ground, folding his legs in front of him as he set his head down on top of them. It was a little disappointing, he supposed--he would have figured some place like this would have been good for that. But then what did he know? He wasn't the one whose special talent was in singing. It did make him wonder, however, what kind of places she did go to for inspiration.

She agreed to sing for him though. Without lifting his head, Crimson glanced up to the filly, a little excited to hear what her singing voice sounded like if her normal voice was already so easy to listen to. An awkward few seconds of silence ensued after Rose cleared her throat and gathered herself, no doubt getting ready to sing.

When she did, it was actually quite pretty. Her singing voice had an almost... mystical quality to it. He could definitely see why she'd gotten a talent in the field: she was certainly impressive to listen to--but that could only make him wonder why nopony ever wanted to hear her sing, or ever asked her to sing. If she was this good, shouldn't it be something she tried to share as much as she could? Crimson didn't really have any answers, so he just continued to lie there, glancing over to her as she continued her song.

When she finished and glanced bashfully over to him, he just offered a half-grin as he pushed himself back up into a sitting position. "Are you kidding me, Rose? That was great! You're probably the best singing pony I've ever heard. I mean that too; I'm a little jealous! I just don't understand why you don't sing for more ponies, if what you said was really true. I'd want to sing all the time if I could sing like you."

Crimson's gaze then moved to the horizon and a look came across his face as if he suddenly remembered something important. He pushed himself up onto his hooves and turned, spreading his wings before glancing over to Rose. "Sorry, Rose, but I'm gonna have to meet your folks some other day. I just remembered something I've got to take care of before I go back home." He then extended a hoof out to Rose and waited for her to bump it before flapping his wings and lifting off into the air. "I'll see you soon. 'Later, Rose!" He said before flapping agagain and flying off somewhere over Ponyville.

Rose smiled wide and proudly as Crimson praised her ability to sing, the embarrassed blush on her face growing even wider than before. He did the complete opposite of what she expected him to do, and praised her for her talent, just as she praised him for his in the schoolyard when he flew so acrobatically. She shuffled a hoof into the dirt and responded shyly to his statement, "Well, I only like to sing when I know that it is gonna be for somepony who likes it, and a lot of colts your age are only more interested in sports and games and those other things to bother with what us fillies do on our free time, so I don't usually bother. I'm glad you like it so much though, I guess that means I can sing around you more often, huh?"

Her grin widened as she came to that realization. She would be okay to do what she liked doing around him as well. It was just like getting to realize how and why she liked her other friends, only Crimson was a colt. That was pretty much the only difference that set him apart from the other fillies she hung around with, that and Rose found herself constantly glancing back to him out of the corner of her eye just to look at him, and every time she did so, she found herself smiling before looking away bashfully to hide some sort of childish giggle, knowing that she wasn't supposed to stare at other ponies because it was rude, but doing it anyways because she wanted to.

He then pushed himself up onto his hooves, spreading his wings before looking back at Rose, who gave him a questioning look. Was he going for a swim now? He would be kinda cold if her did that. No, he had to leave to go do something that he was supposed to do before he went home. Rose stood up after he said that, disappointed that their little adventure was going to be cut so short already, "Awww... that kinda sucks. Oh well, I should probably be heading back home too. Daddy's probably starting to wonder if I'll be back for supper. I guess I could always get you to come over some other time when you're not as busy too."

Scratching the back of her head, she gave a toothy smile and bumped her hoof with his before squinting as he took of, the air buffeting her face and sweeping her mane wildly as he flew off. She waved at him and called out, "See ya tomorrow Crimson! Good luck with whatever it is you are doing!" She waved until he was out of sight, and at that point she just looked over the lake, gave a deep sigh before shaking herself off and trotting in place, giving a squeaky and happy little giggle as she remembered that he liked her singing.

Soon enough she spread her own wings and took off, casually flying over the rooftops of Ponyville back towards her home. When that familiar rooftop came into view, she flared her wings and landed on the roof at such an angle that she slid off the roof, flapping her wings again to slow herself down again before landing near the back door, giving a huff and panting a little bit from her flight. She looked around the back of the house, which had the forge that her father worked at, to see if he was indeed back here.

Indeed he was. The dark grey pegasus stallion with the dark green mane that matched hers was tending to his craft. It was about the time of day when he started to clean up after himself and be back inside in time for supper. The window that was near the kitchen was open, and already the tantalizing smell of what her mother was cooking reached her, making her inhale deeply. She walked up to her father, Slash Zephyr, a reluctant smile on her face. She knew she was late and that she had given such short notice about it. "Hey daddy... sorry I'm kinda late, but I'm here now! Just in time for supper!"

Another slow day, it seemed. They'd still be okay if the rest of the week continued like this, but they'd have to be a little bit more watchful of their bits for a while... A day like this would have been perfect for him to train an apprentice, however; it was just too bad he hadn't found anypony fit for the task.

Sighing quietly, Slash continued the finishing touches on the clean-up process for his smithy, making sure the forge was out, all his tools and anything else precious safely tucked away, and making sure the storage shed was locked up tight. About the time he'd done that he heard something like wings flapping just on the other side of his forge and he calmly glanced over his shoulder to the source. He didn't give any kind of disappointed look to her, but instead gave her a questioning one, one that almost said 'you know your mother's not going to be very happy'.

He turned to her fully, making sure to bring the storage room's key with him and met Rose halfway in the smithy, listening to what she had to say. "You cut it a bit short there, little missy," Slash chided, reaching a hoof forward to pull his daughter against his chest. "Any longer and your mother would've sent me out to go find you, if not go find you herself." He glanced down to her after that, noting the fact that she was a little out of breath. "How far away were you that you're breathing so hard? And what even took you so long?"

Rose gave an embarrassed grin and shuffled her hooves restlessly as her dad gave her 'that look'. She wasn't necessarily in trouble, but it was close enough that she may as well have been. Any longer and she may have been spending some extra time doing chores over the weekend. That wasn't the case though, and she trotted over to her father as he outstretched a leg for her. She balanced herself on her back two legs and tried to wrap her forelegs around Slash, but she was still too small for that, and only got them halfway around him.

She nuzzled into his coat, leaning into him with all her weight, but she was still light as a feather compared to her father, and he didn't budge an inch as he hugged her. She loved her daddy, she wouldn't trade him for anything, not even all the candy in the world. She could not imagine what it would be like to have a dad that didn't care for her as much as Slash did, and it once again reminded her of Crimson and how his parents treated him.

Remembering just how fortunate she was, she held onto her father a little longer and a little tighter as she answered his question, not deviating from her usual excited tone of voice that never seemed to stop, "Oh, there was a new colt in class today and I kinda became friends with him because he likes poetry and rhyming and I like poetry and rhyming and then we went outside for recess and I got to know him a little better and -here's the awesome part daddy- he challenged..."

She paused to take a few deep breaths before continuing as if she didn't stop, "He challenged me to a race so I told him 'You're on!' and then we raced around the schoolyard and I tied with him! I went so fast daddy it was all like a blur, but then recess was over and we had to go back inside and learn our maths and stuff like that. I promised I would show Crimson --his name's Crimson by the way-- around town so I showed him to the Sugarcube corner and we got free cupcakes because he was new in town..."

Pausing to gasp once more, she had now let go of her father and was now bouncing up and down excitedly in front of him, eager to finish her story in the usual fast-paced and giggly voice that she had, "And then we went to the pond we always go to in the summer but we didn't go swimming because it was too cold and I didn't want to get sick so we sat under a tree and he asked me to sing for him and --you won't believe this daddy, he liked my singing! It was so awesome, I was going to bring him home with me to show you and mum but he had to go do a few things around town for his mum and dad so I came home after that and now here I am! What's for supper by the way?"

Slash gave a light half-smile as Rose hugged his neck a little tighter, still holding his daughter as close to him as possible. While Honey was a mother's girl, Rose was a flat-out daddy's girl and while he loved both of his little fillies equally, moments with Rose like this were something he'd always cherish. It was what made being a father worth it, to know he made such an impact on her life that she embraced him like this without a hint of embarrassment.

Then, in that typical excited tone of hers, Rose began to tell him about her day, practically going over every single detail that happened in her day. She explained how there was a new colt in class today and how she had become friends with him--Honey had said as much as well when she came home--but then Rose continued and said something that made Slash a little envious. The colt apparently made Rose actually fly for once. Not only had he been unable to encourage her to do that... he had missed seeing her fly like that. It was a disappointing realization--though his disappointment was underlied by a sense of dread as he continued listening to Rose.

The more she spoke about the colt and how her day had gone, the more it sounded like she was developing a crush for him. He wasn't sure if Rose even recognized that yet, but he knew that the fact that the colt liked her singing put him in good graces in her eyes, and it would only get her to notice him more and more the longer she interacted with him. The only reason that brought a sense of dread to Slash was that he wasn't ready for his daughters to grow up yet. He knew it had to happen some time, but he loved being their daddy, somepony they could look up to and rely on. He loved the moments he spent like this, hugging his girls or playing with them, or just listening to whatever they had to say. He didn't want to lose either of them, which was exactly what he feared them getting into relationships would mean.

Still, when Rose finished her rambling Slash gently lifted a hoof to her mane and ruffled it, offering her a light smile as he spoke. "I think your mother said something about orange rice today, sweetheart. I think I'm just about done out here, so what do you say we go inside? Oh, and by the way, you've got a certain surprise waiting in there for you." He smirked lightly at that as he turned and began to lead the way into the house, knowing how excited that would make her. "So it sounds like this colt is really something, Rose. You must like him a lot." As he looked over to his daughter and waited for her answer he stepped into the dark house... Only to jump slightly shortly thereafter, his wings flared out as a pony jumped out from behind the door that lead into Patches' shop area.

The green maned and green coated pony that jumped out from behind the door let out a mock "raaaaaaaaarrrrrr!" as she raised her front two hooves in the air as if they were claws before bursting into a fit of giggles and lowering herself back onto all four hooves. "Welcome home, Rosykins~!" Misty cheered, stepping forward to wrap her niece up in a tight embrace. "It's been forever! How're things going?!" Slash sighed quietly and shook his head as his sister took Rose's attention, folding his wings back against his body before stepping over to Patches and brushing sides with her.
