Rose wandered inside with her dad, grinning once more as he mentioned that one of her favourite dishes was being served tonight for supper. The sweet oranges and the tasty rice blended together very nicely, along with a few other cooking tricks that her mother knew, and in the end, it always turned out to be a dish that Rose would ask for seconds of. This day just kept getting better and better.
The excitement only continued to well up inside her as Slash mentioned the possibility of a surprise as well. At which point she piped up once again in her excited tone of voice, "A SURPRISE?! What is it daddy tell me tell me tell me tell me pleeeeeeeease~!" Of course, as soon as he mentioned that there was a surprise, he immediately stopped talking about it, only penning up the excitement in such a way that it made her restless, jumping up and down and not wanting to sit still.
Instead he talked about Crimson, commenting on how she seemed to like him a lot. "Yeah I like him! I like all my friends! He is so awesome at flying too, you should have seen him fly around the school too! He was like "fwooooooosh!" and "nyeeeeoooooow!" and going so fast and doing all his tricks I'm surprised he didn't beat me more than he did!" The inside of the house was a little closer and quieter than the outside of the house, but also a lot more darker; the only thing helping her see in the house being the unicorn candles that her mother kept lit.
Smelling the orange rice being cooked, Rose started to turn towards the kitchen to say hello to her mother, but before that happened, the door to the shop portion of the house flew open and a green pony jumped through it, rearing up on her hind legs and kicking at the air ferociously as though her hooves were claws. Rose let out a scared squeak and scampered backwards to hide behind her father's hind leg, wings clenched tightly to her sides as she peaked out from behind him trembling.
Her look of fear didn't last long and it was soon replaced with one of inexplicable joy as she realized that the pony that had startled both her and her father was none other than her own Auntie Misty. A peal of childish laughter followed this realization as she trotted out from behind her dad and right into Misty, nearly tackling her as she jumped up and hugged her. "Ohmygosh Auntie Misty, I missed you so much! All I've been doing is going to school and doing the things I usually do around the house. I was wondering when mum and dad would let us go back to Salt Lick City and visit you and grandma and grandpa!"
Rose let go of Misty, but that didn't mean she would leave her alone either, as she started to tell Misty about her day as well, "Guess what Auntie? I made a new friend at school today! His name's Crimson and he likes poetry, music, and exploring, and he is such an awesome flier too! I was going to bring him back home with me to show my mum and dad, but he had to do other things for his mum and dad so I had to come home alone, but now that you are here it makes me wish I brought him along EVEN MORE! I think he would have liked you a lot too! How was your day, Auntie? Why'd you decide to come visit us today?"
As Rose rambled and questioned, Patches looked over from the kitchen from the food she was tending to, giving Slash a warm smile and a light kiss on the cheek as he brushed sides with her. "You know, Rosy and your sister have so much in common that if they were both the same age, I probably wouldn't be able to tell them apart if they both started talking." She gave a light giggle in her throat and continued to peel and separate a bag of oranges that she brought home from the market that day, pushing the peels into a garbage can that was placed right beside her for convenience's sake.
Leaning over to look at both Misty and Rose again, Patches said a little more quietly to Slash, "How was work, Love? What's this I hear about little Rose getting a new friend, who just so happen's to be a 'he'? Is that who she has been running around with these past few hours after school?" She paused for a little and looked back at the two mares by the door, brushing away her long, black mane from her emerald green eyes, "Did you tell Rosy about Misty and her little surprise already, or are we saving that as something for Misty to surprise Rose with?" She glanced back at Slash again and gave him her trademark half-smile. She also found it enjoyable to see her daughters become excited about things, and with Rose, it was especially predictable for the hyperactive mare.

Misty let out her own childish giggle along-side Rose as the little filly practically tackled her. Misty returned her niece's affections, a huge toothy grin on her face as she squeezed her. As was typical for Rose, the filly then began to recount everything she deemed important at that particular time. To compensate for that, Misty sat down in the middle of the floor, her gaze held directly on Rose as she kept an unnecessarily serious look on her face. She nodded along with the filly's various points, listening to her intently until she had the chance to speak.
When Rose asked her why she decided to come visit, another huge, excited grin spread across Misty's face as she squirmed in place. "You're totally gonna be so happy when you hear the news. See, mom and dad had a little talk with me and said they thought it was time I finally start to act like an adult, so they said I should look into getting into a career as an actress. So I went to Canterlot and applied to the Institute of Magical Art and Music. But travelling between Salt Lick City and Canterlot on a pretty much daily basis wouldn't be a very good idea... So I asked Lightning and Patches if I could stay here, and they said sure! I also met somepony in Canterlot who I went on such a wonderful date with. I can tell you more about that later if you'd like!"
Misty then shifted in place again, now having calmed down a little bit after relaying her news to Rose. "It sounds like this new colt friend of yours is really something! How long has he been living in Ponyville? What's he look like? Does he live far away?" She leaned forward after that, whispering quietly to Rose so that Lightning and Patches couldn't hear her. "Does he like you, too?!"
Meanwhile, Slash returned Patches' warm smile, offering her a gentle nuzzle to her neck before looking over everything Patches had prepared so far. He chuckled quietly at her comment about how Rose and Misty were alike, nodding slightly as well in agreement. They were so very alike, it was almost as if it ran in the family. Although his mother never acted that way--maybe she did when she was younger, and just became more mature as she grew up? Shaking himself from that line of thought for a moment, Slash returned his attention to Patches just as she questioned him about the colt Rose had been talking about.
He hesitated briefly at that, some of the fear he'd felt just moments ago returning to him. It was entirely possible that it was unfounded, that she was just making a really good friend and he was acting like this for nothing. But if he wasn't... He didn't want to think about growing distant from one of his daughters. Instead, he glanced over to Patches when she asked about Misty's surprise and if he'd told Rose about it. He opened his mouth to respond to that, but glanced over his shoulder instead to the two girls not far off. "It sounds like Misty just told her, Love," Slash replied just as quietly so as not to disturb them... though he doubted much would really get in their way. "It's definitely going to get a lot louder around here with her living with us, that's for sure..." He snickered at that, then went on to answer the rest of Patches' questions and comments.
"Yeah, the 'he' she's been going on about is a colt named Crimson Bristle. She said he enjoys poetry, reading, exploring--things she likes too and apparently..." He paused, letting out a quiet sigh before continuing. "She raced with him, and he actually got her to fly quickly; she even said it was a tie." He lowered his voice even further after that, looking over to meet Patches' gaze. "And from the way she talks about him... I think she's developing a crush on him," he said, taking on a tone that reflected his dread of that situation happening. "As for work... It was another slow day. If things keep going like this, we're going to be a little tight on funds in the near future. I guess nopony wants to spend any bits with that damn war going on..." He shook his head after that and gestured to the meal she was preparing. "Don't need to talk about that, though. Is there anything I can help you with, Peaches?"

Patches nodded at Slash's statement of the house becoming a little more lively with her sister-in-law now living with them. It was only a matter of time before-- she flattened her ears against the side of her head as she heard Rose exclaim in a high pitched voice, "NO WAY! YOU ARE ACTUALLY STAYING WITH US!?" This was followed by a high pitched squealing laugh that made Patches pause what she was doing for a few seconds and close her eyes, her expression changing little if at all before she resumed preparing supper, taking the orange slices and placing them on beds of rice before drizzling some of the juices on top of it.
When he asked her if she needed any help, she giggled to herself, once more reminded how thoughtful he always was before she replied, "I'm afraid not, Slashy. Everything is very much ready, and Honey was kind enough to set the table already, so there isn't much else that we need to do other than give Rosy a few minutes to settle down now." She turned away from the counter, wiping it down with a wet cloth as she looked at Slash, looking a little concerned herself as she thought about what he said.
"I don't think this lull in work is going to persist; ponies may be hesitant to spend their bits, but there are always those few that will want to protect themselves and their families as well." Patches paused and looked at the sink, thinking about what she said with a sigh. She definitely knew what that would be like. Nearly fourteen years ago, she hung up her katana on the wall in their bedroom, crossed with Slash's broadsword, hoping that she would never have to think about using it again. With this war though, there was no telling what would happen. Perhaps the time to become reacquainted with her weapon was near; it was better to be safe than sorry. "If money does become an issue, we can budget our way through it like we always do. It won't be the worst one we have experienced."
Turning back to look at Slash, her concerned expression became one of curiosity. He seemed very concerned with the thought that their eldest daughter might be falling for a colt, able to tell easily that this was something that troubled him through the dread that was reflected in his voice. While Slash may have been hesitant about something like this, Patches did not believe that it was a bad thing. Mares did tend to mature faster than stallions, so it wouldn't surprise her that she would start to develop some feelings for the colt. She didn't think this was the case though.
Placing a hoof on Slash's shoulder and rubbing it, she said, "You sound as though you believe it to be a bad thing, Slash. It's still a little early to actually be called something of a crush if she truly met him today. I think they are just fast friends, unless you have reason to believe otherwise..." She picked up all five plates with her magic and started to bring them to the table, "Could you call the girls to supper, Love? That would be nice."
Rose couldn't keep still after she heard the news straight from Misty. Starting to jump up and down in her own little hyperactive way. There was so much good news in so little time; her favourite aunt living with them, the new colt she made friends with, and the new date that her aunt was going out with too. Having been exposed to a lot of her parents' love-y actions towards each other at a young age, Rose enjoyed romance stories, and now that she knew about Misty's love interest, she just wanted to know even more.
But before she could ask herself, Misty started asking her questions about her own new friend, "He's brand new here! I only met him today in class and he says he lives in town. He's a brown pegasus with a light brown mane and tail that has a red streak in it, and yeah he likes me! He wants to hang out with me again so he's gotta like me to do that! What about your friend? What are they like? How did you meet them? Do you like them or do you reeeeeeaally like them?" Rose exclaimed in a whisper that matched Misty's, to which she scrunched her face in confusion and asked quietly, "Why are we whispering?"

Slash gave yet another quiet sigh when Patches mentioned the slowness in work wasn't likely to last. He knew she was right: he'd been hoping at one point that he'd be able to capitalize on the war that was practically on their doorstep, but was a little disappointed when that turned out to not be the case. He just hoped when the orders came in for ponies that really wanted to defend themselves and their family, he wouldn't be too bogged down with all of the requests. Those things took time, after all, and fear tended to make ponies impatient... He nodded at her last reassurance of that they'd make it through any money issues by budgeting like they'd done in the past. She was right... but it only meant anything if worked picked back up soon.
She then spoke her mind about Crimson and Slash's fear, telling him that she instead believed they were simply fast friends. Even though Slash didn't really have any reason to believe otherwise... He did know his daughter. When she took an interest in something, she liked devoting a lot of her time to whatever that was, and even that alone made Slash a little jealous. He didn't want to give her up, didn't want to give up all of the time they spent together... Regardless, Slash gave another nod when Patches asked him to call the girls to supper and gently nuzzled her once again before turning and stepping over to Rose and Misty. "Rose, Misty, it's dinner time. Go ahead and take your seats while I go find Honey." He smiled to them before stepping around them and walking up the stairs to the second floor. He quietly knocked on the door to his daughters' room and peeked in, only to find nopony there... which meant she must have been in the studio. Closing their door again, Slash continued on and stepped up the spiral staircase that led to the study and the studio Rose and Honey used to practice their music at.
This time, Slash didn't knock when he reached the door to the studio. Instead, he opened it as quietly as he could and stepped inside only to lean against the nearby wall to listen to the song his daughter was halfway through playing. She was always so diligent like that, always taking care of her homework, making sure her side of the room was clean, practicing her violin every chance she got... which came at the expense of an obvious lack of a social life. It was a little disheartening to imagine how lonely Honey might be, living like that, but as Patches said if she was doing what she loved and what made her happy, then that was exactly what she should continue doing. When Honey's song finished, Slash stepped forward with a smile and gently wrapped his hoof around her, pulling her into a gentle embrace. Honey lowered the violin as he did so, leaning back into her father and nuzzling him in response. When Slash told her that it was time to come downstairs and eat, she gave her typical emotionless nod before making sure her violin was safely packed up and following Slash downstairs.
Misty giggled once more at Rose's reaction; she always loved the way the filly seemed to hype herself up over pretty much everything and she always looked so adorable doing it, especially when she jumped around like this. She was proud of her brother for raising a filly like this, and--even though it had been in teasing--she'd asked multiple times if she could bring Rose with her when she went back to Salt Lick City. Moments after Misty asked about this friend of hers, Rose began to talk in a whispered tone much like Misty's, telling her about what this pegasus friend of hers looked like, and that they both liked each other.
Misty couldn't help but squeal at that news, though she couldn't exactly congratulate Rose on what she found as the filly then turned right back around and asked Misty about her date... then asked why they were whispering. Misty laughed again at that, offering a shrug to Rose before answering with, "Why not~? It's a conversation just between us two mares, right? So we gotta have some way to talk about it without other pones listening in~." She grinned at that, turning her gaze briefly over to her brother before looking back to Rose and playfully sticking her tongue out at her.
"Anyway, about Twilight," Misty continued in a whisper. "She's a lavender-ish unicorn with a more blue-y, purple-y mane with a kind of streak of pink in it. She's really pretty, and comes off as the sort of smart but sort of awkward bookish type, and is super genuine in everything she does~." Misty grinned at that for a moment, thinking about the date she had with the mare in Canterlot before answering Rose's last question. "And I don't know exactly how I really feel about her yet, but she did leave me with a reeeaaaallly good first impression," Misty said with a wink. She opened her mouth as if to continue and ask Rose another set of questions but was stopped as Lightning came up and said that it was dinner time. Nodding once, Misty hopped up from her place on the floor and turned to the table, gently ushering Rose along with her. "Yup, thanks Z! Time for noms~," she cheered before walking with Rose over to the table.
"So, Patches, your choice of food hasn't changed at all, I see," Misty teased, grinning to her sister-in-law from across her place at the table as she gently jabbed Rose's side. "Rice with a side of rice is always a tasty treat~!" She giggled after that, unable to keep the laughter contained as she fell back against the back of her seat. "Aww, I'm only jokin'. You know I like your cooking~. Anyway, what's taking Z so long? I thought he was just going to get Honbun..."
After a few moments of sighing and impatiently scuffing her hooves against the floorboards below her, Honey and Lightning finally came downstairs, to which Misty immediately piped up with, "Dang, it took you long enough bro. What, did you get lost on the stairs or something~?" Lightning rolled his eyes at his sister's words and climbed into his usual seat at the table as he responded with, "How could I ever get lost with your voice to guide the way?" Misty laughed at Lightning's words before reaching over to hug Honey tightly as she settled into a seat nearby, whom then offered a gentle nuzzle in return.
"Mmkay, let's eat! I can already hear Rose's stomach roaring at us~!" Misty said as she righted herself again, bright grin free for all the other ponies in the house to see.

Rose looked up at the grey stallion when he told them that it was time to eat, standing up and flaring her wings with a grin. "Okay dad! We'll be right there!" Walking alongside her aunt with a meandering gait, smiling to herself as Misty agreed, "Heehee... noms~." Rose loved her aunt for more than just the fact that she was related to her, she loved her randomness; unpredictable yet never particularly unexpected. She was a child at heart, and it was no wonder that she was so good with kids.
It left Rose wondering just what kind of mare that a personality like hers could attract. This mare, Twilight as Misty called her, sounded like a really nice pony according to her aunt. She wasn't sure just what being 'genuine' meant, but she had a general idea of what smart, awkward, and bookish were. It was too bad that Misty didn't get much of a chance to explain this mystery mare to her any more than she could, Rose was starting to get into listening Misty describe her just to try and figure out why they liked each other.
Before she could think of any plans to spy on the two of them though, she had to eat something. She never realized just how hungry she was until she felt something twist in her gut and a strange, primal, and guttural noise emanated from her stomach. She paused and rubbed a hoof on her stomach, giving her midsection a confused and concerned look as she muttered, "Somepony's not happy that they aren't being fed..." With a few flaps of her wings, she was on the cushioned chair that belonged to her, a few pillows on the seat that sat between her dad's chair and where Honey's chair used to be before another chair was brought in to accompany the extra guest in the house.
Perhaps she couldn't actually be called a guest anymore since she -was- kinda living with them for now. Rose still didn't know what to think about that. It was so exciting to have her most favourite relative staying with them, but she was probably going to be so busy with the really hard school -and- her new marefriend, would Rose actually be able to have as much fun with her auntie as she did before today? She too also had a new friend that she was already planning to spend some more time with, so would -she- even have the time to play with Misty?
The rice finally arrived to the table, her mother levitating the five plates and a pitcher of water and setting them in front of the five chairs before taking her usual seat closest to the kitchen. Rose felt a jab in her side and a joke about having so much rice come from Misty, to which Rose only grinned at. She liked rice, and she wouldn't mind having more of it, especially this orange rice. The jab set off yet another stomach growl as the rice plate was set down in front of her, and Patches raised an eyebrow at her as Rose covered her stomach with both hooves and said sheepishly, "Smells good mom!"
Patches looked at her daughter with those brilliant emerald eyes for a moment later before nodding and giving a very exaggerated "Mhmm..." This was followed by an incredibly casual question that took Rose by surprise, "All that racing and flying must have worked up a bit of an appetite in you, hmm?" How did she know that? Did dad tell her? Of course he did. There was not one thing that one parent knew that the other parent didn't, but this was, like, three minutes ago. They were just really in sync maybe.
Her mother sighed as she got herself comfortable, closing her eyes and stretching as she finally had some time to rest from standing at the counter for so long. Rose picked up a fork in one hoof while her mother still had her eyes closed and was met with a gentle and immediate, "Wait for your sister and father, Rosy." Rose set the spoon down and rubbed her stomach impatiently a little more. Not only did she know everything in this house, but nothing got past her either.
"I'm glad you enjoy my cooking Misty." Patches returned, either unfazed by the joke or just not comprehending it entirely as she looked back at Misty with a confused look on her face, "Rice is not only easy to cook and plentiful, but it also offers the greatest energy return compared to other crops such as wheat, rye, and barley. One ten kilogram sack lasts us for about a month and only costs fifteen bits. Not only that, but it naturally takes the flavour of anything it is paired with, though rice with rice might get a tad bland..."
She glanced over to the stairs that led to the second floor and smiled at both Honey and Slash as they walked by to join them at the table, Slash sitting between Rose and Patches, and Honey sitting between Patches and Misty. Patches smiled to herself at both Misty and Slash made jokes towards each other. When Misty finally declared that they eat, Rose's stomach gave one final gurgle in agreement, to which Rose moaned in dismay and annoyance before, Patches giggling to herself at the comedic timing.
When they finally got down to eating, and were a few bites in Patches looked up at Misty, giving her a smile as she tried to think up some dinner table conversation. She had not seen Misty in a while, and she only heard the basics from her when she stopped by the shop a few hours ago asking if she could live with them for a few years. Patches had no problem with it; she was the closest pony that she could get to having a sibling, even if she was an in-law. Misty didn't seem to mind the idea either, so they both got along just fine, even if the fact that Patches was a little more calm and less erratic than Misty was quite prevalent.
"So Misty, you are going to the university in Canterlot, hmm? I heard it is such a nice place to study. And you are taking your degree in the arts too? I could definitely see you as an actor, most definitely." She took another bite of her food before continuing, "What I am more interested in, however, is how your new marefriend is doing. I want to hear all about her, if you don't mind. How you met her, your first date, what she's like, what you plan on doing next--" Rose who had been watching and listening this entire time while stuffing her face then piped up from beside Misty, "Ebberythin'!" Patches shot a look across the table at Rose and said, "Rosy, don't talk through your food, please." She then looked to Honey and asked, "And I want to hear all about your day as well, Hun. What you did, what you learned, and what you think of Rosy's new friend too, as well as what you were playing upstairs. It sounded very beautiful when I checked."
