Bladecasting
As warfare evolved a few unicorns believed that being a mage left them vulnerable and so began to practice with melee weaponry in order to strengthen this obvious shortcoming. It was met with mixed success, the traditional weapons proved hard to use while using telekinesis alone. This led A unicorn guards-pony: Langschwert to study laboriously for months until he emerged with a solution.
Using his gained knowledge of metallurgy, Langschwert managed to create an alloy of metal using Platinum and small amounts of iridium. The result was a blade that was sensitive to magic. The first of these swords were simply full sized swords made of the alloy, it allowed the unicorn mages to use these a little easier as the metal seemed to want to follow magical currents.
This was further improved by the Unicorn: Red Flash and his brother an Earthpony smith by the name of Shaper. Shaper proposed that the alloy could be cut into pieces and used more precisely by the unicorn to create a rather versatile weapon that would give them a huge advantage in a fight. Red Flash liked this idea and went to work attempting to create a discipline to effectively use such a weapon... He failed.
The focus required was just too great. Even with the magical metal the pure amount of focus involved in controlling multiple weapons at the same time with telekinesis magic was strenuous and wouldn't prove valuable in the long run if the fight dragged on. Regardless it was considered an advancement and so unicorn guardsmen opting to specialize in this new fighting style were more known for quick bursts of heavy damage but leveling off as time goes on: unfit for front-line combat. The final advancement of the modern form of Bladecasting came from the theory and exercise of Astor Courscare.
Astor was considered a genius when it came to Bladecasting: His pure offensive style more often then not put enemies to shame quickly. Even if a battle would last longer the expected 'slow down' for Bladecasters never appeared in his stance or movements, as if he never tired. Astor eventually wrote all he learned and knew of bladecasting into a book entitled "I am the sword."
This book outlined exactly how Astor was able to control his blade, a cause. This cause had to go beyond merely 'for my country' it had to encompass the pony's own personality and embody their pride. It needed to be a greater reason then money or power. It had to be a cause they believed in so fiercly it wouldn't matter how many injuries they took. If a pony had this kind of cause their magic would flow easier and theorhetically use less energy.
The downside to this was that a cause could be shaken. If for a moment the unicorn's cause were to be undermined in their own psyche their blade would tremble and their magic buckle as the sudden stress from lack of focus would shatter their stance. Thus as duels between Bladecaster's became more common these bouts would be one part martial might and one part philosophy.
"I am the Sword" also explained three very basic forms of Bladecasting.
Custodia- a defensive stance meant to tire out the enemy and then attack at full force in a gambit to finish the fight, Taking potshots inbetween.
Dependendum - A balance between Offense and Defense, this form made the use of the quick motions a floating blade could produce. some of its maneuvers are near impossible for a non-unicorn to mimic, it was near unpredictable because of this.
Ignis Gladius- This form fused magical combat and Bladecasting into a machine of pure offense. The Blade itself would be covered in a strong aura of magic focused to burn like fire. It heavily drew upon the Igni school of magic to mix martial might with fireballs. This form left no room for defense however as the Blade of the unicorn would always be separated into its maximum amount of parts to maximise damage potential.
