"My flippanc-- my what? Listen here pacifist my love for all things Equestrian superscedes my respect for life. I could not care less why they chose to face my comrades in battle. I've yet to find a griffin or diamond dog who surrenders. How naive of you to pity nations that slay our kind who want nothing more than your safety. That is infuriating!" Boom Wing quickly and angrily explained, yelling the last sentence. His glare was dead-locked with the pony across from him and he could see that he returned his glare in full. He realized that neither would back down from this any time soon.

"Such venom in your voice. Are my beliefs really that toxic to you, soldier? It wouldn't be the first time, really. I must wonder if you never had encounter with those other species. As I said, I have colleagues in my career who are Zebra, who are Griffin... expanding my horizons is why I feel this way. I do not wish my people to die any more than I want theirs. That is why I find war abominable. Clearly, however, it seems that you lack empathy, else you'd likely feel the same way as I."

"Empathy..." Boom Wing scoffed. "I'm supposed to feel sorry for the creatures I've killed when they would've done the same to me? Or already have to those I know? Maybe you lack the lack the wisdom to see why we must fight. Maybe I want nothing more than your dreams of everyone being all happy and gettin' along just fine to come true. Maybe I hate the war just as much as you. But I'll be dead if I'm laying down while others come raining arrows onto my friends without being repaid in kind. Stand in my place for a day and maybe you'd see why I feel this way." With every word coming from Boom Wing was an increasingly heated exhale. He could see that the pacifist and he wanted the same thing though he wouldn't admit it aloud. The two were of a different upbringing and he could not see how Arpeggio's methods would ever end the war.

Arpeggio snarled. "If only more folks put more stock into the power of simple words. There's a reason they say that the pen is mightier than the sword. Words are stronger than any weapon could ever hope to be." He was getting quite irritated with the other pegasus, and it likely showed in his posture.

"If words were powerful then you'd be mighty strong 'cuz I think that's all you got!" Boom Wing replied, his words carrying a hint of threat with them. "Take your pen and fight your fight but don't you dare criticize those brave enough to take up a sword and do something about the war." Boom Wing, even with the chill of the air around him, could feel himself getting quite hot within his jacket.

"The power to create is far superior to the power to destroy. I stay my hooves because I desire understanding and dialogue." He frowned, glaring fiercely at the other pegasus. "...And you have no right to tell me to stay my tongue. If others are willing to fight and kill, then so be it. I understand that our country is in danger. It's just a pity that blood has to be shed. It's barbaric."

"I'll tell you shut yer trap if you ever insult me or my own again. Do well to remember that our country is in danger and the military is doing what it must to keep that bloodshed away from your nice little village here. I know barely anyone here but I'd give my life keeping them safe. You can tell me how effective being barbaric is once the war's over and our kind can safely live their lives." Boom Wing explained harshly. The tone he used was steady and full of withheld aggression. It was at a much more civil volume than before but with just as much power behind it as ever.

"You're welcome to try and make me. I respect that you're doing everything you can, but that doesn't mean I have to like the situation, as opposed to what it sounds like you want me to think. This is a conflict that never should have come to bear."

Boom Wing eyed Arpeggio and made his assessment of the other pegasus. He was slightly bigger than Boom Wing, though it was probably a factor of age more than anything. He could see that he had wings just as large as himself and he kept in mind that Arpeggio was not injured like he was. Even as aggressive as he was getting he knew better than to fight when he was supposed to be recovering. He wouldn't dare make mention of that, however.
"If only you were worth it." Boom Wing scoffed. "I don't care what you think of the situation but unless you've something helpful to add you can keep your thoughts to yourself. I'll take my scorn from the enemy, not my fellow citizens. Truly I pity those idiots who are unfortunate enough to face me in battle. Maybe we can agree on that at least." Boom Wing continued. His words were now much more calm than before but the sound of hate behind them still made itself clear.

Arpi just smirked a bit. "If you say so. I'll let you have your single-minded belief." He noticed the eyes going over him. He didn't think he could win, likely; he didn't seem to be in his best condition.
"Again, though, I say that you really have no right to try and still my tongue; we're given freedom to express ourselves for a reason. And no, before you say anything, you're not allowed to use your fighting for that freedom as a reason to force me to give you respect. That's simply faulty logic."

"Of course. Respect is never forced, only earned. I needn't respect from you nor do I need to hear your infantile view on how the world should work. Maybe one day Equestria won't need people like me. Until that day my comrades and ponies with more intestinal fortitude than you will be fighting to keep everyone safe." Boom Wing stated, his tone down to a normal talking volume and the aggression slowly diminishing. "I've a funeral to attend for someone somepony a hundred times the pegasus you could ever hope to become. He gave his life defending his nation, friends and comrades. I could only hope that you'd have the respect for life not to spit on his image or curse his sanctity. Someponies give more than just words." With that Boom stood to all fours and made his way off to his table, threw some bits on the table to pay for his order and tip and began walking off.

"Ad Equinem argumentation. Why am I not surprised? War is senseless. I just wish those in charge of the countries can see that. If only; then maybe your friend wouldn't have had to give his life. Maybe he'd have been able to enjoy the things life has to offer." The brown pegasus glared at the leaving pegasus. "Unfortunately, that can't happen now. It's a shame."

Boom Wing continued in his stride as he left the diner, forcibly telling himself that the pacifist was not scorning Blink's name. He trotted back to his room with little haste, though his expression was that of suppressed frustration. He would later go out that night for dinner, though he did not encounter the pacifist again. He actually never saw him for the next week. Boom Wing had spent the majority of his time in Ponyville resting in his room, spending so much time awake in bed that he was almost glad to get up and go to Blink's funeral. The day had finally arrived and Boom Wing's heart sat in the lowest position it had been in for years.
He retrieved his uniform and looked it over, noting that it was still clean and pressed with all of its medals and devices still in place. He donned it and checked himself in the mirror and it seemed almost that he was looking at a picture more than a reflection, with as still as he stood. He made his way to the funeral at a slow pace, feeling as though it were almost a walk of shame that he had to, once again, face the parents of a fallen brother-in-arms. Arriving at the funeral the rest of Blink's family held the same demeanor as his parents towards Boom Wing and the military in general. Distasteful eyes fell upon him as he stood there, only to watch as the pegasus that was flying next to him only a week ago was slowly lowered into the ground. His parents, with tears in their eyes, asked the emotional questions of whether or not Boom Wing could have done anything. HIs apology and reassurance that nothing could have saved Blink only made the family hate him more.
He said some kind words about how Blink was, thus far, the greatest pegasus he had ever had the priveledge of working with and soon left. The funeral had been perhaps the worst event for him on leave and he spent the remainder of the week absolutely drained. He had taken to pacing around the room until he was tired and sticking to a strict schedule of keeping to three meals a day. He had simply too much time to think and his thoughts of the war had rarely ended with believing that it would be one by fighting. As much as he hated the pacifist for his ideals, he couldn't truly disagree with him either. Boom Wing reminded himself that someday they'd meet again, perhaps next time he wouldn't be in a sling.
His time on leave had seemed too long, even though only a week in length. He had almost no desire to head back and continue fighting the war for fear that he'd have to attend another funeral of somepony he knew. Irrational thoughts about how he could have stopped Blink or saved another of his comrades came to mind and ate away at his sanity until he went to visit his old sergeant, knowing that he needed help. His sergeant had taken a whole day of just talking to Boom Wing to set his mind in the right direction and motivate him once more. "Majesty nor country matters when you're fighting. It's about who's on your flanks. They matter. Never forget what you're fighting for them. Never." he had told him. It had taken some time for those words to sink in, but this occured shortly before he had to leave.
Boom Wing had left Ponyville with little more than a trail of tracks, leading off towards the train station. A train ride to Canterlot later he found himself finding the military post there and checking in just in time to catch the next supply ship heading off towards his unit. A ship containing everything from bombs to the mail was soon Boom Wing's passage back to his unit, which he rejoined only a day later ready to continue the fight.
