*shk*(the sound of metal scraping sharply against metal)"Look, it's nothing personal."

The guard sat in the chair, tied down, terrified of what was to come next.

"It's not like I enjoy this sort of thing. In fact, if it were my decision, I would have just cut your throat and been done with it." The sly voice from the shadows teased.

The guard looked around frantically, unable to voice his shouts through the rag that gagged his mouth.

"And, I know we got off on the wrong hoof," *shk**shk* "But accidents happen, right? I mean, you didn't mean to walk in on me like that. And I certainly didn't mean to get caught. It was just a little oversight on my part."*shk*

The voice came nearer and soon came into the light, revealing a tall, sly looking maroon Pegasus with a trademark grin and a stylish suit jacket overtop a white button down shirt. One had to look good in this line of work after all.

"And, hey. I just want you to know, it pains me to do this. I find it sloppy and a bit excessive. But being that you've seen my face, and I can't just kill you, I really have no other alternative." He lifted the knife he'd been sharpening and shrugged.

"I just want to make sure, there are no hard feelings. Because that would just kill me inside." He removed the rag from the guardsponie's mouth.

"LET ME GO YOU INSANE BASTARD!" He shouted once he was free to speak.

"Hmm. Welp! It's not a 'No'..."

Guard Found Mutilated: Missing eyes, tongue and teeth. In critical condition in hospital.

Read the days headline. Alpha sat in the restaurant, reading the paper. "Why would they publish something like that?" He asked himself, bewildered. With the war going on you'd think that ponies would have enough to worry about. But that was the way of the media. They told ponies what they wanted to know, and sometimes what they DIDN'T want to know. And the last thing he wanted was for his work to go public. Of course, that was always a risk in the spy business.

He wound up getting what he wanted though. He was sure he could put it to use somehow. If not now, then after the war with whoever came out the winner. Getting back into the game for real was a pleasant change of pace. And he even got to play double agent a few times. Leaking a few secrets to Equestria here and there. Though at the rate the war was moving, you'd wonder if they were even paying attention to them. He sipped his coffee and began eating his morning omelet... But not before flirting with the waitress of course... But that's not really important.

It was a normal day in Ponyville, not much out of the ordinary in comparison to the day before. The sunlight was warm and early spring winds were still chilly. The ponies carried on about their business with little worry on their mind. It was a normal day in Ponyville, but there was a killer on the loose. Or so the newspaper had informed Joe Buck, who was sitting in the local diner the village. He read the article with concern displaying in his green eyes. He wore a stylish gray jacket and was sipping on a cup of coffee as he read the article. 'Could this be him? Hmm... His dossier did mention brutal methods to accomplish goals, yet this could be a murder. Then again, few things are coincidence anymore.' he thought as he took another drink of his coffee.

He noticed a rather cute waitress prancing off to serve an omelette for some customer and seemed to look away with slight discomfort when she walked past. He had sat in the corner of the diner and could see most of the patrons in the building, though not the one she would give the dish to. 'Eggs. Blech. I had blissfully forgotten some like to eat the young of other creatures..." he thought to himself as he continued reading. He made a mental note of the guard and where he which hospital he was staying in. He was very short on leads and the poor stallion may be linked to his mission's objective.

The thought coming to mind once more he began to recall his mission and tried to think as his objective would. His name, from what they knew was 'Alpha' and they only had a basic description for them to go off of for the pegasus. His department had fewer words on his behavior; only that he could be messy, employed brash methods in lieu of his silver tongue when it was most convenient for him. They had also made mention that he was unpredictable and that was simply another headache for Joe to have while tracking him down. His mission was simple enough: Learn of Alpha's latest activities and discern if his freelance work is having a negative impact upon Equestria.

The intelligence department had informed Joe that Alpha was in possession of many classified secrets and an eye must be kept on him until the end of the war. While Joe would not be the one with a constant watch upon him, it was his job to provide a means to track him since he was quite adept at disappearing. With another sip of his coffee, Joe finished his cup and soon ordered another one. He then neatly folded the paper to continue reading the story on its pages.

Alpha set his paper down. 'He's still alive and can't tell the authorities a thing.' He thought to himself. 'That's all that really matters to me.' He brushed a bit of dust off of his khaki jacket and straitened his sky-blue button down shirt. He looked down at his omelet hungrily and began eating the concoction of eggs and vegetables.

He looked around the diner. Noticing a few new faces. Most likely ponies who had family in town and wanted to get away from the war. All the refugees would go to a big city like Canterlot and eventually overwhelm it. Not that that was any concern of his. He had what he needed to get by. And no war was going to change any of that.

He finished his omelet and left a generous tip for his favorite eatery. Then made his way to the exit, passing a unicorn in a snazzy grey jacket. 'Now that guy knows how to dress.' He thought to himself, paying him no more mind and exiting the building.

Joe set his coffee down while staring out of the window of the diner. In truth he was looking less out of the window and more at it. He had already made note of the villagers outside and the buildings within view and would focus on something outside when something new would happen. Instead he was looking at the remarkably clean window which he could see the reflection of the diner in. Behind him he made note of the customers, noting nothing of importance. Then a customer had soon paid for his meal and left and Joe couldn't help but him in the reflection in the glass. 'Son of a Griffin. he thought as he spotted his objective leaving the diner.

Joe withheld the smirk that was forcing its way into appearance as he noticed that Alpha had looked at him and kept a placid face. Once he had left the diner, however, Joe soon retrieved the few bits required to pay for his meal and placed them on the table with a tip. He casually left his position from the diner table and would keep any sight of Alpha within his peripheral vision to watch him discreetly. He would pause for a moment to straighten out his jacket before heading out, if only to add some distance between himself and Alpha. He would begin to tail him as loosely as possible to include as many elements to mask his presence from his objective as possible, though wouldn't be no more than a good run's distance away.

Being a Pegasus, Alpha had the advantage of being able to avoid the ground traffic and take to the skies. It was without a doubt, the best way to travel. Never needing to worry about running into other ponies, cutting routs much shorter than they would normally be, and giving an aesthetic view to boot.

When he'd first arrived years ago, he didn't think that ponyville could HAVE a rough side. But after living here for that long, he discovered that even the smallest of towns could have it's dirty little secrets. As a matter of fact, he was on his way to meet one of them right now. A local restaurant owner by the name of "Chef". Chef wasn't any ordinary chef though. His creations tended to have a bit more 'bang' for the buck.

After a short, yet low flight over the town, he landed at the restaurant in question and entered the premise.

Joe only gave a concerned frown for a moment when he saw Alpha take off to fly. Joe had his personal disadvantages, though he knew well where his strengths were. He trotted off at a brisk pace and kept an eye on Alpha as he flew. The move through the village was short as the village itself was not a big one. He had kept to moving through the crowds as much as he could but not enough to slow him down, occasionally casting a glance at Alpha to make sure he had made any sudden changes in direction. Many flyers never took any deviance from their path unless to avoid certain areas or to use the ground as a guide. Luckily it appeared that Alpha had done just that.

Joe managed to spot Alpha just as he entered a restaurant across the village from where they had been. He examined the place from afar and made mental notes of its structure, location and entrance. He took the time to pace around the building and recorded the location of any exits that he could see. He made his way to stand behind some empty stall across the street and kept an eye on the restaurant Alpha was in. He took a moment to assess the situation while he watched. He had already been seen and from what Joe knew about Alpha it was that he was perceptive enough to probably recognize him. He also knew that a direct approach would be a fool's gambit on whether he would come clean on his actions or not. 'No, I need to be as indirect with my introduction as possible. I must make him curious in who I am, not chasing him around. And I have a good idea how to make that happen...' Joe thought as he soon turned away from his position, trotting off.

He soon located the hospital of the maimed pony from the papers and made his way up to his room. He had acquired a doctor's coat and surgeon's mask along the way and his gray jacket was gone now. He soon found the pony in question, seeing the poor stallion with two eye-patches and sipping on a hay smoothie, wincing from the pain. Joe closed the door to the room and smirked. It was going to be a very interesting day.

After about an hour, Alpha exited the building again. Satisfied with how his 'order' went. His next batch of homemade carnage would be more than acceptable for his needs. Once they were delivered to his office, he would begin preparations immediately. In the meantime, it was beer-o'-clock. Which meant that he had a hot date with a glass bottle and the surface of his desk.

He flew to his office near the more crowded area of town. It was a nice two-story with a living area upstairs. The 'office' and other related things were in the downstairs area. He entered and broke out the booze almost as soon as he walked in. It was going to be a short night...

Joe had learned wonders from the poor soul in the hospital. He was a guard and worked to pay off some debts that he had previously been under for his home. The silver lining to the dark thunderstorm of his fate was that his medical insurance had paid off those debts in full. He had family up north and had decided that he would probably go to visit them when he was better. In fact, Joe had even written a letter for the Stallion, whose name was Iron Shackle or so, to send off to his family. The day had been slow, however, as the entire method of talking to Iron Shackle had been time consuming. Boolean questions answered by raising his right hoof or his left hoof had made for an arduous interrogation. However Joe found this stallion's input enjoyably useful.

It told so much of Alpha's character. He would still make mistakes and handle them in a messy manner, though still showed a pang of mercy and respect for life in sparing the innocent guard overall. Truly it was a mistake to let him live only to explain everything, painfully, later. As the night finally came to a close Joe knew that the guard would need his rest to recover from the tragic incident. The guard had explained what Alpha looked like, what weapon he used on him and what he was doing when he caught him. It was enough evidence to charge him with a heinous crime though Joe had other ideas of course. A freelance spy such as himself would have a much greater use than somepony rotting behind prison bars, however. Joe had left the hospital feeling all sorts of content with his visit. It was not long before he had written down all of the details of the visit and sealed them in an envelope, only to be dropped off at the local newspaper headquarters.

The next day had brought fair skies and a warm morning sunlight and also a new headline on the newspaper. "Maimed guard tells all! Police to capture assailant soon!" read the title on the newspapers around town. The story within told of the guard who had described the attacker, though it seemed to leave out all of the important details of who it was. The paper claimed that police were withholding information until the one they were after was caught and to be cautious until he was behind bars. The paper also described that the guard would soon give the rest of the information which would lead them to finding the attacker soon, as the guard was not feeling well enough to continue an interrogation just yet.

Alpha woke with light nausea that morning when he heard a *thump* at the door. His hours of drinking never effected him the way that they used to. Not that he minded not having to wake up with a splitting headache, but the feel just wasn't the same anymore. He lifted his head off the desk, wiping away a bit of drool. The sun was already out, so that sound was probably the paperpony making his delivery.

He climbed out of his chair and made his way from his office into the waiting room. Which was disturbingly empty. He'd have to get a sassy young secretary one of these days. Maybe a college student looking for an internship or something. Just so he could have something to look at on his work days.

He reached the door and opened it, looking down to see the paper that he'd expected to be there. He grabbed it and returned to the secretary's desk, sitting in the chair that had been empty and lonely for a long time. He kicked back and opened the paper. "Alright." he said "Time to see what's happening in the world."

The headline, however, was not something that Alpha was expecting to see. "Maimed guard tells al-..." he cut himself off. "There's no way..." There was no way that he could honestly believe what he was reading. Even if they could get a description out of him, how many "Red Pegasus" could there be in Equestria? How would they get him to talk, if they could even FIND him. There was no sure way of telling that. No, he'd just wait it out and play it by ear. Either they were just trying to lure him out, or sompony was messing with him.

Joe sat in a chair at a table upon a balcony, sipping his coffee whilst reading the day's newspaper. The balcony itself rested on the second floor of some house in Ponyville and overlooked the hospital where the injured guard stayed. Joe smirked in confidence as he read the paper before him, noting that it spoke of only the information he had intended to give. With another sip of his coffee, he set the paper down and kept an eye on the hospital. Joe had watched as a pair of police officers had entered the hospital, no doubt wishing to speak to the guard pony, and left only a few hours later with looks of confusion. Joe could only assume that they had attempted to talk to the guard and failed, just as he thought they would.

Joe's little trick was working out fine, but he was dealing with a random variable that he would have to deal with carefully, being Alpha's response to the whole situation. He could just ignore it all and assume it a bluff, or attempt to kill the guard to keep him from spilling the beans. Or even burn down the hospital. 'No, he wouldn't do that. He isn't that reckless.' Joe thought with another sip of coffee, this one seeming a bit forced. 'Or maybe he is? By Celestia what have I done? Oh I need to stop worrying. Chances are slim of him showing up during the day anyhow.'

Joe finished his coffee and retrieved his paper, holding it out before him as if to read it, though he kept an eye on the hospital.

It had been hours already. If their was going to be any sort of move on him, he should have noticed it by now. Yet, the streets remained full of ponies, as he could see through his window. They were just going on about their business, not even a guard asking questions. He decided it was safe to investigate further. He opened his door and walked out like he normally would any other day. Keeping a smug appearance as if he didn't know anything.

He began his little trek, walking through the streets. Just as he thought, not even a flyer with a description. It was clear now that nobody knew anything. The press was probably just jumping the gun again... But that's not the attitude that made him a good spy. Counter intelligence was about just that; gathering intelligence. He hadn't survived as long as he did by just taking things for what they appeared to be. He was a skeptic.

He decided against visiting the guard in the hospital, he wouldn't be able to give him any useful info, and no doubt where whoever it was that wanted to find him would be waiting. Using the guard as bait to bring Alpha out to keep him quiet. Well, Alpha didn't just waltz right into traps. Well, maybe once or twice just to see how it went. He decided instead to scope the hospital from the outside, taking to the sky and steering a cloud closer for cover.

Joe sat patiently upon the balcony and sipped at the coffee he had. The place he was at was actually a coffee house and he had free refills all day, which he would capitalize upon. He would, of course, throw a bit or two for a tip to the kind waitress who would refill his cup every time it was empty. She was not the prettiest mare in the land but she was certainly one of the more polite ones that Joe had encountered. He rarely even read the paper before him, which he peered over to see the hospital. He made the occasional glance downward to read some of the stories to help him pass the time, though he never looked away for too long. Even under the constant watch of the rather perceptive spy, Joe did not notice the pegasus who would be hiding behind a cloud above the hospital. Instead his occasional skyward glances would only catch sight of occasional four-hooved flyer and bird that never resembled Alpha.

Joe reminded himself that this was a game of patience, of cat-and-mouse tactics. He was ultimately surprised that the drive for Alpha was not enough to provoke immediate action. If somepony were about to reveal Joe's true colors to the world then he would have taken means to stop it by now, but perhaps Joe was assuming too much of Alpha. His own intelligence officers knew little of the freelance spy and Joe knew even less; it would be foolish to make any assumptions on him. Joe knew it would probably be late at night when nopony was around that Alpha would likely make his strike. Taking another sip of his coffee, Joe waited patiently for his objective to make the next move.

Alpha waited and watched for a long time. But despite his effort, he couldn't find anything out of the ordinary. After waiting for a long time, he decided it was time to take more drastic measures. He steered his cloud cover away and returned home where he would rethink his approach. Because anything worth doing was worth overdoing.

Infiltrating a hospital was not something that Alpha had ever planned on doing, but there was a first time for everything after all. He would travel low, to the emergency entrance at the rear of the building. To cover his entry he would use a combination of disguises and practical knowledge. It really wouldn't take much.
-------------------------------------------------------------

Alpha approached his target entrance, clad in a subtly colored hoodie to conceal most of his head and upper torso while he was in the open. Once he was inside, he'd transition into something that would allow him a little more access.

He kept his eyes open, trying to see if he could meet them with that of the one he was trying to catch. No luck. Perhaps there would be better luck inside, where everyone was on the same level, instead of spread out in multi-story buildings.

Joe had spent the most of his uneventful day sipping tea during the afternoon and then switching back to coffee during the evening hours. He knew that Alpha was to soon make his move; no sane spy would leave a loose end for long. His strike would be tonight or never as that was the deadline he had bluffed. Once Joe was absolutely certain that Alpha would not strike during the day he decided to rely upon his fall-back plan. Joe paid the owner of the coffee shop a handsome tip for his hospitality and went to visit a place of greater hospitality. Joe was nowhere to be seen a moment later and he was almost late for the change-over to the "skeleton crew" of the hospital staff.

Joe had managed to find a doctor as he entered the hospital. With a silver tongue and enough fake knowledge of the medicinal field Joe had managed to distract the doctor long enough to walk into the hospital and past the reception counter with him. Once no curious eyes were watching, Joe gave the doctor a dose of medicine, being of the airborne sleep spray variety and sent him into a long nap. Quickly Joe moved the poor doctor into a random closet that he was certain would not be disturbed. He took the doctor's identity card, coat and even a surgeon's mask that the found in the closet, stuffing it in the coat. He stepped out of the closet and cast a telekinesis spell to lock the closet from the inside, knowing that it would be morning before the doctor awoke. Joe casually made his way to the guard's room and took a seat in the corner, opposite of the opening of the door and so he could see the windows clearly. He placed the mask upon his face and watched quietly for the next sign of trouble. The caffeine coursing through his body would help to at least keep him awake for the next few hours.

The hospital was pretty busy today. Lots of ponies wandering about, and just in time for the shift change as well. Alpha was smart enough to have the foresight to bring his own doctor's uniform. One that he'd used once or twice before for past missions, back when he was still officially a freelance spy. And LONG before the incident that had sent him underground.

But that was long taken care of and no longer a concern. He had better things to look out for... Such as the young intern just across the check-in counter. He started up a conversation, stating that he was a volunteer, come to help out in whatever way needed. He played the hero card quite well, talking the intern into letting him pass without an ID check. He did leave her his card though, in case she wanted a new internship at the office.

Once he passed the checkpoint, he found himself a nice private room to change. He walked out wearing his white Doctor's coat and a pre-made ID badge. Looking in the mirror, he realized that he probably should have done something about the scars, but they then again, they also gave him the look of an experienced professional. Now, he couldn't just go straight to the guard's room. He'd have to check the place out. All 3 floors...

And to his avail, nothing at all. Which left him only one place left to check. The place that he didn't want to be seen going into. The victim's room. He was cautious. Surely whomever was trying to draw him out was nearby. He came up to the room and peered through the window and... "Hellooo..." He said to himself when he saw a familiar looking unicorn. It made sense to him now, he'd been tracked. Perhaps it had only been coincidence that he'd seen him in the diner, who knows how long he'd been followed.

He smirked. Not something one would normally do in a situation such as this. And he did another thing that probably no sane person would do. He entered the room. He knew nothing about this pony, what kind of training they might have, who they were with, or what it was they wanted. Not that he was worried about it.

"So, how long have you been following me?"
