All is silent in the halls of the dead. All is forgotten in the stone halls of the dead. Behold the stairways which stand in darkness; behold the rooms of ruin. These are the halls of the dead where spiders spin and the great circuits fall quiet. One by one.
================
The gunslinger stepped through the darkness of the tunnels, and the child followed.
It had been a half hour since the two of them began their journey from deeper in the cavernous subway tunnels and service passages. The silence in the darkness was only interrupted by the steady beat of their hooves beating against the concrete as they walked beside the dilapidated rails, the gunslinger’s steps a little heavier and farther apart while the child’s were lighter and rapid.
They were heading in the direction where the child had heard the sounds of other ponies many days ago, the goal of their excursion being to find more civilized life in these tunnels other than the irradiated ghouls that wandered about. It had been a month since the separation of this section of the tunnels from the rest of SubTerra to keep the ghoulish threat at bay, but in doing so, it also trapped a good number of the citizens with them.
The weak died fast to the shambling horrors, sickness, radiation, or malnutrition. The strong banded together and made their stands, many falling to the insurmountable flood of flesh, but few also able to dig deep enough in to set up the last refuges of hope and safety.
That was what the gunslinger hoped they would find, and that the camp did not consist of citizens and guards turned bandits and raiders. If that were the case, then the gunslinger would urge the child back into hiding and follow behind her before looking in a different location tomorrow… or whatever counted for tomorrow down here. Unless one had some sort of timepiece on them that still worked, there was no way to tell what time of day it was this deep underground.
Their ultimate goal was to find a way out of this place, but it was not going to be an easy task. Wandering the tunnels of the former SubTerra was a hazard due to the ghouls that lurked in the dark. Their slightly glowing eyes pierced the dark and relentlessly pursued any that crossed their path to rip them apart limb from limb, and there were droves of them in these tunnels. It would take a posse to carve their way through the thickest of them, a posse of the most coordinated ponies still alive, just to find a way out.
From the dark they could see arc lights set up further down the tunnel up ahead, a sign of civilization plain and sure, but the question of whether they were friendly and the light at the end of the tunnel was not their demise was still up in the air. The gunslinger watched the ground around them, noting ghouls piled against the tunnel walls, the ground coated in spatters of dried blood. There were no everyday ponies or citizens among them, perhaps the settlement up ahead was just as friendly as she hoped.
As they approached the makeshift barricade and the gate that was planted in the midst of it, the two guards on either side of it stood at attention, alert and leveling their guns at the both of them shouting for them to halt. The gunslinger stopped dead in her tracks and held her left hoof in front of the child to stop her as well. From under the brim of her hat, the gunslinger eyed the two guards, the leg with the revolver attached to it tense and ready to move at the slightest hint of trouble.
The one on the left had a battle saddle equipped with what looked like a submachine gun, and the other carried the distinctly green glowing of a plasma weapon, slowly glowing brighter as the weapon powered up. The one with the battle saddle barked at the two of them, “State your business or we will gun you down.” The gunslinger slowly pushed the child back behind her and replied in a chilled and haunting voice, “I am but a gunslinger and she my travelling companion that were trapped here underground, and we come here for some shelter; not long will we be around.”
For a few awkward seconds they stood and looked at each other, before the one with the energy pistol lowered his weapon with a sigh and said, “Well, they stopped and talked. They definitely aren’t walkers.” He glanced at his cohort and added, “You can lower your gun, man.” Well, they definitely weren’t professional guards, that much was easy to see.
Standing aside to allow the two of them through, the gunslinger and the child moved to proceed through the front gates, but were stopped again by the guard as he said, “All newcomers are required to check in with a doc before mingling with the rest of the survivors. Their tents are just to the left of the gate. You might wanna get in line fast, the line can really get long sometimes. Welcome to Hope’s Cradle.”
With only a curt nod, the gunslinger and the child walked into the makeshift refugee camp, and immediately turned left to see several white tents, ponies in white coats milling about and tending to the ponies that were among them. Following the standing sign with the arrow that read ‘New Arrivals / Triage’, the gunslinger and the child waited their turn to be seen by a doctor.

Rose tried to keep as close to the child as she could, trying not to let the filly out of her sight. She couldn't help every so often looking around though, to see all of the computers that have fallen silent over the many years, their blank screens staring down at them, the dust covered reflection of a gunslinger looking back at them. How far technology had come, only to become the wrecked husk that it is now. Some may be able to get it to work again, but the fact remained that technology lay in ruin because of technology.
She tipped her hat over her eyes a little more and looked about as Bitter Sweet stopped and asked the doctor where his supplies were. As he described where they were, she listened carefully, wrinkling her nose at the sound of radiation. If there was one thing that was always bad news, it was what she couldn't see. She was no stranger to it, she has walked the surface before and stumbled across many a pocket of marked radiation, and even more that were unmarked most likely. It kept the doctors on the surface town busy cleaning the rads off her, that was for sure.
It turns out they wouldn't even have to carry the supplies either. Gear Box had offered up the services of his pet robot thing that had been silently following behind them like some sort of pack animal. It looked almost like a cart that could be ridden, and Rose began wondering to herself if it could indeed serve as some sort of transportation. Probably not so much while it was all loaded up with supplies, but there was always the possibility that if one of them needed to stop walking, they could very well be taxied around by a robot.
As they discussed how to get around the radiation to the supplies, Rose stood still for a second before shaking her entire self from head to hoof suddenly for a few seconds. When she finished she let out a quick breath, shook her head a little, and looked around as though nothing happened. Was it getting around that time already? How long had she been down here? She twitched restlessly, finding it hard to stand still, before she walked up to the Doctor and said, "If nopone else is willing to go, then retrieve your supplies I will do so. I'm used to regular doses of radiation, so it won't be so much a shock to me. I won't be stupid though, if you may, a dose of Rad-X may need to be the fee."
Somewhere further in the tunnels, the distant howling of a few ghouls could be heard. Rose stood completely still, her ears twitching as her eyes darted to all entrances of the room, her revolver leg twitching. "We best be quick about this, we may have a few uninvited guests soon in our midst."

Doctor Method looked over the Gearbox and nodded, "I'll gladly take advantage of that offer, Sir," he said with as a smile slowly spread across his face, his eyes half lidded throughout the exchange, "If he can really carry out everything, I won't have to come back to this place ever again, and that's quite the relief." He then looked around and noticed Siren, her entire body shaking for only a moment, but it was enough for the Doctor to learn some rather vital information about her and her next statement.
He pulled off his saddlebag and rummaged through it for a moment before pulling out two syringes labelled Rad-X. He uncapped the needles and, without warning, injected some into Siren and himself, "While I'm sure your rather capable of handling this expedition on your own, I don't hand my keys over to anyone," he said as he started walking down the tunnel, motioning for Siren and the bot to follow him, "It's not too far, but the ghouls aren't too far away so we better hurry. We'll be back in a few minutes, just hang tight until then," True Method said as he picked up the pace and started running down the tunnels.
Once they were out of earshot of the other two, Method turned around and looked at Siren without slowing his pace, "Listen," he said as he turned back around, "I don't usually help other ponies with their addictions, but I can tell you're in the early stages of withdrawal from something and I need you to be at your best to get through this, and if that means pumping you full of whatever drug you're addicted to, I'll lower my moral guard and let you have at it. I've got everything in there, even some stuff that I shouldn't, so if you need it, I got it."
The pair continued running down the tunnel until they got to the storage lockers. True Method walked down the hall of lockers until he reached one that was slightly larger than the rest of them and pulled a key out of his saddlebag. He put the key into the padlock and turned, catching the lock as it fell off and opening the locker. Inside was just about anything a working medical doctor could ever ask for, drugs, bandages, splints, painkillers, blood thinners, anti-venom, you name it and it was in that locker.
"Help me load the bot up," he said as he called back to Siren, "And make sure you tell me what you need, I'm not about to just let you steal from my supplies, if you're getting your hooves on anything, I'm going to give it to you. It's not that I want to know your drug of choice, I just need to keep proper stock of this stuff," he said as he grabbed a clip board off of the door of the locker and shoved it in his saddlebag before loading up Mueller.

Siren held her breath as she felt the Rad-X needle pierce her skin and slowly inject the medicine into her system. While it was going to stave off the radiation for a long time, it was not going to do anything to stop the shakes that she started getting. Hopefully she would be able to get some privacy soon so she could rectify that. She knew what lay in wait for her in her saddlebags, and that was sweet relief from her troubles.
They started walking through the radiation, and while it didn't feel like anything was happening, she knew that there was something malicious in the air that leaked out of the ground and into the air that would have started to slowly poison her had it not been for the drug that was injected into her system. The terrain was a little rough, but it was easy for the sure-footed ponies. Rose looked back to the robot to see how it was faring, wondering if they were going to have to meet it halfway with the supplies. Nope, it was climbing the debris just as well as any pony.
Rose looked back to see Hon watching her walk away, and Rose could only wonder what was going through the young one's head as she was being left behind. Calling out in some effort to reassure her, she said, "I'll be be back soon Honey..." That probably wasn't going to be enough, but there was nothing else that she could do. She hopped down nimbly from another rock, and froze as soon as she heard the doctor whisper to her, saying that he knew what she was going through.
Staying quiet as he opened the locker and revealed a treasure of medical supplies, she started to wordlessly load up the bot that had rolled up behind them, trying to avoid eye contact with the doctor like a child that knew they were caught with their hooves in the cookie jar. After most of it was loaded up, she turned to the doctor and said, "I don't have as much of a problem as you think I do, but the withdrawal is something that, unfortunately, is rather true."
Reaching into her saddlebags, she discreetly pulled something out of her saddlebag to show him before putting it back. "My... vice. Street name for it is 'steady', and for good reason. I take it to keep my aim true and straight, but it comes at a price." The device was nothing more than a glass sarsaparilla bottle, the end taped off with a tube running from the opening and down the side, complete with a tin foil heating element as well. All it would take was to light it up and inhale deeply, and whatever was in the bottle would be in one's system fast.
Rose put it away before anypone else could notice, unaware of the bot that stood quietly behind her, whispering to the doctor, "I only have about five doses left, and after that... well, I tried quitting cold turkey before and it was terrible. I felt like I was dying. Normally I can cook up my own batches from certain chemicals and plants, but it's hard to find those plants underground." She shrugged at the doctor before finishing loading up the robot, "Please try to keep this between us though, doctor-patient confidentiality and all that comes with it. I can only wonder what the child would think of me if she found out I did this kind of shit."
There was the howling again, and it sounded closer. Rose raised her revolver and glanced around again, ears on a swivel as she said in another hushed whisper, "Come on, we need to get back now and not stand around like fools. I don't exactly fancy myself as dinner for ghouls."

True Method listened as Siren talked about her addiction. Of all the hard street drugs that one could get addicted to, Steady was probably one of the more tame ones, even if the way one takes the substance isn't exactly considered safe. He rummaged through the locker, tossing everything he could into the bots storage unit as quickly as he could, Stim-Paks, Rad-X, bandages, painkillers, splints, and various other drugs both illegal and legal all went into the bot at a speed that would be considered extreme by any definition of the word. When he finally got around to the Steady, instead of tossing it to the bot he started passing them off towards Siren, "Ten vials, five doses each, that's fifty doses, hopefully that can hold you off for awhile," he said as he passed her the vials, "And tell me if you are getting low. Us doctors know how to get a hold of that stuff faster than anyone, and if worse comes to worse, I'm sure I can make it in a safer way than you could, no offense."
He tossed the last bit of supplies into the bot before turning towards the sound of the noise, "I'm in a bit of a battle with addiction myself, Miss," he said as he started walking back down the tunnels, "A necessary one considering my injury, but an addiction all the same. Plus I've done just about every drug in that cabinet at least once to try and numb the pain so don't think that you're the only one that struggle with this shit in this rag tag group of idiots running through ghoul infested tunnels to get a bot that might as well be our last best hope."
Doc Method sighed at that, "I shouldn't be like that," he said as he picked up the pace as he raced down the tunnel, the sound of the ghouls coming from behind them growing as he hoofs hit the concrete. There wasn't a whole hell of a lot of time before the beasts would be in the storage area and once they got there it would only be a matter of time before they found where they went from there, "I'm a Doctor, I really should be a bit more optimistic."

With the gunslinger Siren, Doctor Method and his robot companion Mueller all hurriedly racing through a radiation pocket, Gear Box was left with the filly Honey Dew. The technologically inclined stallion found that focusing on helping the situation at hand was always a better task than whining about, so he made no protest about being stuck with the filly whom he was already on bad terms with. Still, the last thing he wanted to do was deal with radiation that he knew he wouldn't handle well. He found a secure place to sit that would grant fair warning should anything approach and pulled out his keyboard, lowering his goggles once again. With a few quick taps he accessed Mueller and set a few pre-programmed protocols in motion to help it intelligently handle the task it was given.
First and foremost, it would do any command that Siren or Doctor Method assigned to it. Second to that it would follow the two ponies, knowing that it was assigned to help them retrieve goods and haul it back. Third, in the event of the deaths of the two ponies, it was to return immediately. These protocols were merely combinations of various commands that Gear Box knew how to quickly input and provided a security measure in the event of radio signal loss. The static that was starting to effect the video feeds from the robot's increasing distance in the tunnels reinforced his resolve that he had made a wise choice to program the robot now, rather than later.
That done, Gear Box lifted the goggles a bit to see clearly, just enough so that an upward glance would put the video feeds in his vision again. He could see that Mueller was following close behind Doctor Method and Siren, but not much else. He then took a moment to check on the status of his rifle and gave it a small diagnostic. The weapon whirred and reported that its systems were armed and ready and he smiled at it. The weapon kept its aim upward and Gear Box kept a vigilant look around, not wanting any company. He was far from a good fighter and his strength was not working in groups. He felt uneasy but also forced himself to trust that these ponies were genuine in their intentions.
These thoughts of the his weapon, being in a group and his security in mind he took a glance at Honey Dew. The young filly seemed to be far from what would be useful in a fight and carried only a laser pistol, holstered on her ankle. For the two being the non-combatant types, hiding would be their best option should a stray ghoul wander their way, or anything hostile for that matter. In the event that their hooves were forced, it definitely wouldn't hurt to have an extra laser flying the same direction as his. He also saw an opportunity to help rebuild his status with Honey Dew. While he felt callous to her thoughts of him in the end, he would prefer if she didn't dislike him.
He cleared his throat and gave a short smile to the filly before opening his mouth to speak. "Is that an A-E-P Seven Laser Pistol? A good model. May I inspect it? I'll let you hold onto my E-M-P grenade while I do, if you'd like." he stated, pulling out some blue, technological cylinder with a simple pin and key-ring on it. He held it out to offer it to Honey Dew, half-heartedly expecting her to swap it with her laser pistol. She would more than likely have trust issues with him so some leverage would be acceptable. As young as she was she might just want to look at it out of curiousity. That, or she was old enough to understand you simply don't hand off your weapon without having some sort of advantage still, no matter who the other pony was.

From her place in the shadows nearby, Honey Dew laid on the cold, stony ground behind the cover of some rubble, staring in the direction that Siren and the doctor had wandered off to. The sound of the ghouls off in the distance of the tunnel had scared her, and she had no intention of being in sight if they happened to wander in the same tunnel as her as they waited for Siren and Method to come back.
She shouldn't have been surprised, but to her mild irritation, Gear Box spoke up from nearby, asking her about the pistol strapped to her leg. She glanced to him briefly before levitating it out of its holster to take another look at it. It was confusing to her--foreign--and she had no idea what Gear Box had called it. Whatever it really was, to her, it was just a thing that killed or injured other ponies.
Huffing quietly, Honey levitated the useless heap of metal over to Gear Box and set it on the ground before him, only to take the EMP grenade from him. She didn't bother to look at it while she had the chance--it didn't really interest her, and she knew she wouldn't understand what it was just by looking. So she set it nearby and stared blankly at Gear Box as she spoke up with, "It does not work. I tried shooting myself with it and all it does is make a clicking sound."

Gear Box only cast a curious, if not concerned, look at Honey Dew upon her response. Her words along with the distant sounds of ghouls sent a small shiver down his spine. The thoughts disappeared as he shifted his focus on the laser pistol before him. Picking up the pistol he inspected it closely and checked its hardware. "That's an interesting way to perform a function check on a laser pistol. Well you removed the safety, so its battery must be..." he said quietly as he held the weapon. Looking at the battery he spotted the problem and a single chuckle left him as a small smile came across his face. He released the battery from its slot and flipped it over, inserting back into the pistol. "backwards." he finally said, finishing his sentence.
Aiming the weapon somewhere harmless, he adjusted the output of the weapon to a single watt and fired the pistol a few times. Bright beams of light escaped the pistol in a series of flashes, though none had no physical affect on anything. Adjusting the power to an above-average output of the weapon he made one final inspection of the pistol. The weapon appeared to be in working condition, with the normal wear-and-tear of any pre-apocalypse weapon, but it was ready. Gear Box then presented the weapon to Honey. "There we go. To reload the battery you just press this release right here--" he set, tapping a button that released the battery from its container. Taking the batter out he placed it back in and gave it a small tap to load it back into place. "And just swap out the battery like that. This switch here is the safety and this one, as you know is the trigger." he said, showing two other switches on the weapon to Honey Dew.
The young unicorn did not express much concern for the device earlier and she more than likely wasn't about to start. Then again, knowing how to operate your sole defensive measure in a harsh world might pique her interest. "It's set a slightly higher output, but one that this model can handle. You've about to twenty shots to make the ghouls go away. Luckily this one aims straight and it's enough to drop a ghoul on a good shot." he explained, offering the weapon back out to her. "If you need a recharge just ask; I'll have Mueller give it a shock." he added. With that thought in mind he glanced up at his goggles for a quick view on what Mueller was seeing.

Quietly, Honey Dew stared unblinking at Gear Box as he picked up her pistol, watching every movement of his intently--not because she distrusted him, although that had some merit to it--but because she wanted to know how to check the gun to see what might be wrong with it in the future. If she was going to be using the weapon, she wanted to know how to take care of it so she wouldn't have to depend on anypony else to do it in the future. Of course, there was always the matter of not knowing how to shoot it...
Her ears flattened against her head a little bit in embarrassment when Gear mentioned the battery being in backwards; she'd never once touched the battery inside of it, so that must have been how it was placed in there by the pony she'd scavenged it from. The embarrassment she was feeling was because she'd never thought to look at something so simple, regardless of her lack of knowledge on the weapon. Still, through watching Gear, she had already been able to see how to get into the battery compartment to check it, so she had at least gained something from all this.
Not to mention watching him adjust the output on the weapon. While she didn't understand what he was messing with at first, she was at least able to piece together the fact that the shots were nowhere near deadly since no damage was done to anything he fired at. So when he messed with the output on the weapon again, she could only guess to herself that he had set it to some kind of test setting. It was something she'd have to mess with on her own time later.
She watched again as Gear showed her how the different things worked on the gun, even learning something about the 'safety'... whatever that was. She didn't quite understand what he meant by 'higher output', but she could guess that it had something to do with just a few seconds ago and his firing the weapon. She also kept in mind the 'twenty shot' warning, and reminded herself that she'd have to start counting if she were to actually fire it. She took the weapon from Gear after that and spoke up with a quiet "thank you" as she levitated the EMP grenade back over to him.
The only thing she could do after that was lie behind the rubble and wait for Siren and Method to come back... hopefully before the ghouls did.

Siren glanced back at Doctor Method, giving him a strange and quizzical look as he went on his little spiel about the four of them being a ragtag group of idiots that were wandering around the tunnels looking for a robot that would save them. It was very pessimistic to say the least, and it wasn't something that she really could appreciate coming from him at a time like this. It must have been the sounds of the ghouls approaching that was setting him on edge like that, but who knows? Maybe he was always just a glass half empty kind of stallion. It wouldn't be much of a stretch considering the luck he must have had to get such a unique injury as his.
"I appreciate the offer, Doc, but I'm tryin' to keep it under control as much as I can. Sure I like what it does to me, sure it really sucks to get the shakes when I don't have a fix after a bit, but I really don't wanna become one of those ponies that absolutely relies on it." She paused for a bit before looking to her hooves. For all she knew she was lying, it was probably already too late for her. It had been a long while since she had her first hit of that drug, Steady, to calm her nerves after she lost the one pony she invested the most time with, for all she knew, she was just a junkie in denial, only she looked a little more well-kept than the rest.
The red headed mare rolled her eyes under her wide brimmed hat, listening once more to try to judge how close the ghouls were getting. The last she heard of the them, they sounded as thought they could have been around the corner. Acoustics could have been playing tricks on her again though, they have doen so in the past, both with hearing close ghouls and assuming they were far away, making her stumble into them, or hearing ghouls that were far away, assuming that they were close, and spending an hour or two on edge, stressing her nerves too much as she waited for the beasts to show themselves.
The sounds of laser fire caught her attention though, and her eyes widened as she immediately assumed the worst was happening. She assumed they were too far away, and now it was only the gray stallion, Gear Box, defending a no doubt terrified filly from a horde of bloodthirsty ghouls. She picked up her pace as fast as her three-legged trot could go, keeping her revolver raised and ready to shoot, silently wishing under her breath that the worst was not happening. It looked as though Gear was shooting at something out of her line of sight, but he was doing it so nonchalantly, it made her wonder if he also lacked emotions as well as social sense.
As soon as she passed a bit of rubble that blocked their line of sight, she looked over at what he was shooting at and breathed a small sigh of relief as she saw a wall and some blackened debris, with no sign of a ghoul corpse. She looked at Gear Box and whispered, "Good gods, I thought that the ghouls had found y'all. We need to get moving, judging by the sounds, I could guess there's a pack somewhere in the next hall." She glanced around a little before asking, "Where's the little one-- oh, there you are. Come on sweetie, from this place we should try to get far."
No sooner had she said that, her blue eyes flashed down the corridor they just came from, a figure in the shadows making it's way down in shaky and jerky motions. Rose's pulse raced, her senses sharpened as adrenaline dumped into her bloodstream, and she could hear her own breath. Slowly, she raised her revolver, finding herself unable to get a clear shot, muttering an, "Oh no..." and readying herself for what was about to come as the ghoul looked at the four ponies. It's glowing green eyes glaring at them angrily in the dark as it opened its mouth and let out a ghastly scream, the radiation sores over its body lighting up as it called out to the other ghouls in the vicinity, and catcalls echoed throughout the tunnels.
Dinner was found.
