Land was a precious thing. Seraph knew this. It was the pre-foundation for bigger and better things. And the Pegasus had a vision of what could be. What could be made in the sheer amount of space that he'd come to own. As a result, he found himself making regular trips to the hardware store, buying up wood, nails, mortar, bricks, and various tools. He didn't mind hauling them back to the mansion by himself, and as a result, he'd gained a good amount of muscle tone. A few quick drills with his friend Arael had seen that he still kept his agility up though.

"You can't build body muscle and neglect your wings, otherwise, you won't be able to fly right." She would say. It was always strictly fitness training though. Seraph politely declined any combat training she offered. When would he ever need to use it? He was just an architect, and what one might consider a bit of a pacifist. Whatever defensive training he did know from his childhood would have to due.

"See you next week!" He said to the clerk. as he left the shop and began hauling his heavy cart of supplies.

Midnight was a bit more irritable than usual, it had been three days since she had last eaten. The exiled cultist was used to hunger, but with the amount of energy she had spent wandering aimlessly only to end up in this small town it was more than she could bear.

Of course, she had no money to even purchase food with. When she had wandered into down the day before, her first objective had been to find a place to lay her head, and luckily she had found at least that much. So for the time being, she was living in an empty apartment that she had broken into. But now, her objective was to find some place that she could steal food from. Just enough to keep her going, she didn't need too much, and didn't want any sort of missing product to go noticed.

So, with a cloak on her back and a hood pulled over her head to protect her from that damned sun that all the surface ponies seemed to love so much, she sneaked her way back out of the apartment without anyone seeing her to question who the strange new tenant was.

This was really only a scouting run, stealing in broad daylight was too risky and she knew that. The exile would have to wait until nightfall to actually get some food.

So she wandered the market, browsing the different food stands and different shops, just pretending to be another browsing shopper. In her distraction, she had failed to notice the Pegasus hauling a cart full of hardware supplies until she had already bumped into his side.

"I'm sorry..." She muttered softly, her cold voice breaking the silence. "I wasn't paying attention, I didn't see you there..."

Seraph felt something solid hit him and, despite his size in comparison, knock him into the arm of the cart he was pulling. "Hey!" was his first response, being a bit irritated at the stranger's carelessness. The stranger did apologize however, which made it a little better he supposed. "It's fine, just... Be more careful next time." He said

The stranger's voice hit him in a strange way. He could tell quite obviously that it was female, though it was hard to see her face through the cloak she wore. And the voice seemed... He didn't know, sick? "You, uh, alright there? You don't sound so good."

"I'm fine." Midnight lied, shrugging her shoulders slightly. It didn't really matter to her whether he believed the lie or not, she'd be walking away either way. She had found her targets, and she had already grown tired of being out in the daylight hours.

"Just been having a bit of an off week." She admitted with a small shrug, and a held back laugh. If only he knew how true that was. She had gone from having nothing, to murdering her family, to being exiled from her home in the span of a few short days.

Midnight looked around, and then briefly up at the sun before looking back at the pegasus in front of her. "Normally I'm not so distracted."

Seraph didn't really believe the stranger when she told him she was alright. "You sure?" he asked. "Because, I can take you to the hospital if you want, or home, or maybe get something to eat?" It sounded a bit weird, asking that sort of thing, but it was just the politeness that he was raised with. Along with the traditional Ponyville hospitality that he'd come to love.

"I said I'm fine." Midnight repeated, a defensive edge lacing her tone now. What was he trying to gain by offering to help her, there had to be something. Normal ponies didn't just offer to help people, especially not where she came from. The fact that attempted murder hadn't even taken place yet kind of surprised her.

Still, the offer of food was enticing. After all, it had been the entire reason she was facing this horrid daylight. "I... I really shouldn't." She muttered to herself.

Why was she even briefly considering this plan? She had to get away before she did something remarkably stupid, the sun was starting to mess with her mind. "I should go." The cultist decided, quickly turning in the direction of her temporary residence and taking off.

Seraph watched as the stranger left the scene in a rush. "... What a strange pony..." He said aloud. And continued about his way to the mansion. He'd seen stranger, sure, but he still wasn't quite used to seeing bizarre things outside of the estate.

-----------------------------------
The next day

As it would have it, Seraph found himself flying back into town, having forgot important dry walling material. It was only a minor inconvenience, but still, he would have rather not forgotten. He landed at the hardware store once again, cart in tow. He might actually be able to fly this one home if the load wasn't too heavy.

Midnight growled and shielded her eyes from the sunlight that had broken through a gap in the curtains as she woke up from a night of sleep. "How much longer will I have to endure this hell?" She groaned.

Wait, sunlight? "Shadows damn this wretched surface world!" She howled in frustration. She had slept through the night, and had failed to procure herself a meal. As she remembered that, her stomach cramped up and sent pain wracking through her body.

"This sucks..." The cultist sighed, standing up from the ratty old mattress she had laid in the darkest corner of the apartment when she had first broken in. Now she had to think of what she was going to do next, would she wait until nightfall or do something a bit more bold?

She glared daggers at the source of sunlight peeking through her curtains. "I'll bring down an eternal night on this place if I have to..." She growled to herself. If only she had access to the resources of her cult, at the very least she'd have been able to make this apartment semi-bearable with a few simple spells to block the sun from entering. Or she could just steal some thicker curtains...

Midnight threw on her cloak and stepped out of the apartment into the sun, hiding her eyes from its punishing light. First things first, food. And the best place for that was the marketplace, so that's where she headed.

By this time, Seraph had gotten all of his needed supplies and began making his way home. Unfortunitelly, the weight of the cart prevented him from flying home again, so it was more workout for him. While he was walking, he remembered something Arael said about picking up groceries. She usually did that herself but would be busy today, so it was up to Seraph to do it now.

He cut through the 'industrial' section of town and headed to the farmer's market. It was a sight to see for a small town. Many ponies peddling their various fruits, vegetables, and baked goods. It would just be a few necessities today though. He pulled his cart through the crowd, maneuvering trough the sea of ponies in front of him.

Midnight wove her way through the crowd of ponies that seemed to perpetually mill about the market, at least this would make it easier for her to get away with the petty theft she had planned. She had always gotten away with stealing in much smaller crowds where she had come from, this would be like child's play to her.

It would only be a matter of picking the right target at the right time. Too few ponies checking out a stall and the missing product would be noticed by the owner, too many and she would be found out by another customer. She had to be quick in her attack and her escape.

This mindset reminded her of home, what it was like during her early days of 'freedom' when she had escaped to the treacherous cabal that had promised her revenge. Having to steal her food, sneaking what she could when she could. Unfortunately, thinking of home pulled her mind into a dark spiral and distracted her from the task at hand.

She hadn't even noticed the pegasus from the day before until she almost bumped into him among the crowd, but quickly recognized the coming obstacle and ducked out of the way.

"Won't make the same mistake twice..." She muttered icily. Still, it seemed weird to run into the same pony two days in a row. Was she being followed? Was this someone that had been sent to track her down and watch her? He wasn't very subtle about it, but was that maybe the point?

She blended into the crowd as she passed right next to him and started to tail him, her previous thoughts of hunger now focused on self preservation. Yes, it was paranoid of her. One didn't survive long where she came from without being paranoid, even less so someone from her family with the reputation and power it held.

Seraph continued about his way, doing nothing of interest except gathering groceries and tossing them in the cart. He did this for a couple of hours, filling the remaining space in the cart with produce. All the while, completely oblivious to the pony that had been stalking him.

After he'd gotten everything he needed, he turned for home. Pulling his heavy cart back towards the estate.

Midnight weaved through the crowd of ponies as she continued to trail the pegasus. As she followed him her mind started to run rampant with why she happened to see this exact pony two days in a row in the same place. Her paranoia refused to allow her to dismiss it as simple coincidence, it had to be something worse, something far more sinister and in all likelihood something that threatened her safety.

So she would follow him to where he lived, and in the dead of night return to that place and kill him. It was the only logical conclusion, it removed a potential threat. And even if he proved to not be a threat to her, it had been far too long since she had last spilled blood.

Midnight blinked and found herself suddenly stopping as the crowd milled around her. 'What the fuck was I just thinking...' She thought in disgust. The massacre at her family's estate had awakened something dark inside of her, some primal bloodlust that was now starting to rear its ugly head. But she couldn't bring herself to stop now, her mind was running away with the idea.

And so she continued to pursue, like a predator in the all too familiar shadows.

Seraph arrived at the ever-open gates of the Sanctuary Inn, identified by the stylish sign that hung out front. The place was better known as the Ponyville Estate, which had been formerly owned by a wealthy family that had decided to move further north, and thus, put the home up for sale. Seraph had bought the place at a hefty price. Paying nearly everything he had left to live on. But it had turned out to be worth it in the end. He'd made any additions and extensions to the building, making it much larger than it had been before.

All of this contruction could not have been funded without the help of funds from his residents however. And Seraph made sure to give them the best accommodations possible. He spent the better part of the day working, putting up a new building in the rear courtyard. He had planned to use the space as a pool house. Every good home needed a pool after all. Once he was done with the day's work, he left his work and pile of materials underneath what had been built so far of the soon-to-be pool house, so as not to leave clutter.

Seraph then went inside, noting the time, ate dinner with his housemates and got prepared for bed. All the work had left him tired, and he needed to recover for tomorrow's enjoyable session of construction. His room was the original master bedroom, on the opposite side of what had been built as an homage to his home. Decorated with the traditional style of the Dawn to Dusk guild, it would certainly catch any eye. Especially the eyes that had Seraph had unknowingly led to his home.

Midnight stalked the pegasus to his home and couldn't help but smirk, her upper lip curving just slightly to reveal her fangs. 'This will be too easy.' She growled, 'Putting in so little work to obtain such a sacrifice, it almost makes this not worth it.'

And so she waited, it wasn't time to strike yet. She didn't wait for too long, she was impatient and excited. Perhaps it was too early to move in for the kill, but she didn't care. She wanted blood, shadows damn the circumstances in which she got it.

She could almost track this pegasus on scent alone, but there were so many other scents that hung in the halls of this massive house. She concentrated and stalked through the shadows of the hallways, every hoofstep bringing her one step closer to the satisfaction of a kill, the feeling of blood spraying against her fur. Underneath her cloak, her wings rustled slightly, her wingblades hungry for death.

By the time she got to the doors of the master bedroom she was literally shaking in anticipation. Her lean, starved frame was quaking at the thoughts running through her mind and the anticipation that hung in the air. She could hear her heartbeat, see the red behind her eyes, all those wonderful sensations that she had feared might be gone forever.

The cultist opened the door slowly, peeking her head inside carefully. There were no lights and the room was dark. Her eyes, now wide open with a crazed look in them scanned what she could see, and what she saw only confirmed her paranoia. The guild, that damnable star worshiping guild that her people had hunted down all those years ago, he was one of them.

Her fangs glinted in the darkness, her wings unfurling slightly from under her cloak. It turned out this would be a good kill, a very good kill. And so she began to stalk with murderous purpose towards the bed itself, where she saw the prone form of the pegasus.

While Seraph slept soundly, he drempt of home, and how life used to be. He would visit the fountain at the square often. Looking up at the ceiling of the massive cave that the city was built inside. Holes had been carefully carved from the surface to let in light from the outside. And on the top of the mountain itself was the main astronomical studies center. A large building that Seraph had the pleasure of doing maintenance on more than a few times.

His dream was interrupted by a flash of light and a thunderous clap which woke him from his slumber. He didn't jolt, but his eyes were now open. As it turned out, a storm had rolled in above ponyville and the rain came rushing down, along with all the associated sounds. Like thunder.

Seraph rose, rubbed his eyes and looked around the room... He had to double-take however when he saw the figure standing at his bedside. As a matter of fact, he didn't recognize this pony at all at first, and it was taking a moment for the fact that this was an intruder to finally register.
