It was getting to be dusk in the small desert town of Appleloosa. Ponies were wrapping up whatever business needed doing and ending their work for the day. One pair of ponies had only just arrived a few hours earlier. Cynder, Starry and Fen had checked in to the local Inn and gotten a shared room. Paid for with Cynder's newfound fortune.

Cynder had gone downstairs to grab a bite to eat. The trip had been by hoof and left her hungrier than she could stand. Tomorrow they would be getting everything they needed for what was assumed to be a very long trip to the Scorched Lands.

It had taken Starry and Cynder almost a week to travel to Appleloosa. It really shouldn't have taken that long, in reality. The problem was that they were forced to stow away on a boat from some strange village at the end of Gildale because no captain wanted to take an earth pony on their ship. Apparently earth ponies, especially mares, didn't belong on the waters. That didn't stop Starry nor Cynder from sneaking into a crate and pretending to be cargo.

After that things went smoothly. The walk was nice, the surroundings beautiful, and the conversation plentiful. Starry got to know more about who Cynder was, and that she was apparently some noble from Canterlot, and had crazy connections to some of the most well known ponies on the planet. Starry was rather shocked, replying with most of her own little history, and about the pony she used to travel with named 'Hex'. Starry even recalled how she met Fenny, who was injured when they first met. He seemed the remember the occasion saw well, and cawed happily when Starry brought it up.

It was decided that the pair would travel to the Scorched lands, as Starry figured that both Fenny and Cynder would enjoy the prospect of giant, lava spewing volcanoes. Cynder agreed and their destination was set.

It was midday when Starry and Cynder reached Appleloosa. While Cynder went off to pay for a room, Starry ran off to go sell her crown and gather some bits for it. She was astounded to find out that what Fenny had grabbed was worth far more than she had counted on, and Starry could not physically hold that amount of bits. "W-woah..." was her only reaction at the sack of gold she was confronted with. it took her around an hour to drag it all the way back to the room, dragging lost of attention to her along the way.

Cynder wanted to hurry and get at least SOME supplies before the day ended. She wanted to refill her new canteen as well. Maybe grab some late night snacks. She saw told Starry that she was going into town and to meet her at the tavern later.

She only grabbed a few things; water, a head-wrap, some trail-mix and a set of new saddlebags. After she was done with her shopping, she went to the tavern to wait for Starry.

After Starry dropped off her bag at the room and locking it heavily, she made her way to the tavern, hungry for anything. She had taken a few bits from her bag as well, To pay for the food. It didn't take her long to find Cynder, and she sat down next to hee.

"You'd never guess how much that crown was worth."

"Oh yeah?" Cynder questioned. "How much? Are we rich?" If they WERE rich, then they could afford to have some fun tonight. "In celebration, I say that tonight, WE DRINK!"

"Rich in the terms that it the guy who bought it from me had to get a loan from the bank and it took fenny and i a full hour to drag it from his shop to our room. So, yes, I think I can say that we're rich." Starry explained, giggling a bit.

"Drink? Ohohoho no... I d-don't drink. I'm too young."

Cynder laughed. "Not gonna stop me!" She said, slapping down a coin and ordering two drinks. "C'mon, just one, then I won't bother you again." She said, taking her glass and downing it's contents.

Starry eyed her glass a, moving it around and examining it's contents. "Well.... i don't know..." she told Cynder, but then sighed and downed the glass faster than Cynder thought possible for the young mare.

"There, happy?" she asked her friend with a slight smile.

Cynder let out a laugh of victory "'Atta girl!" She said, patting Starry roughly on the back. She then got a mug of alcohol and started drinking again. "Soooo~ Tell me more about this Hex guy."

Starry had only one drink, and since she was relatively young she had a somewhat decent resistance to alcohol. She could think clearly, or as clearly as she could on any regular occasion.

"Hex? He's a traveling scholar that took me in and was probably the closest thing I had to a family. He's somewhere in Equestria off on business, and i was supposed to be in Ponyville just waiting for him... ehehe. He'll understand if I run off for a while with you." she told Cynder, ordering a glass of soda for herself.

"You make him sound like a big brother or something." Cynder said. giving her mug a break for a moment. "Playing hard to get are we?~ Trying to make him chase after you?~"

Starry looked confused for a moment. Was she trying to insult her or something? Or possibly a tease? Either way, it wouldnt work.

"No? He's far too old to be in that kind of a relationship with me. I make him sound like a big brother because he is the closest thing I have to a big brother." she told Cynder, picking up the soda that had just been placed on her table and downing it in a single swig.

"Parent's dissapeared ages ago."

Cynder deadpanned. That was nothing close to the reaction she wanted to get. "What a killjoy. The hell kinda reaction is that? You were supposed to be like." She jumped from her seat onto some imaginary stage and feigned a cutesy vulnerable personality.

"What?! No! It's not like that! I swear!" She returned to her normal self and sat back down. "Like that. Not... Whatever that was."

Starry rolled her eyes at Cynder's reaction to what she had said. She knew it, this pony was looking to tease her by evoking a reaction based on her relationship with Hex. Why did she have to be stuck with her... Starry nearly jumped in her seat, embarrassed at the actions of her cohort, and put a wing on her to get her to sit down.

"Alright alright! I get it. Well if you haven't figured it out yet, I'm not like everypony you meet on the streets. Most ponies would probably have reacted like that. Then again, most ponies didn't get raised by a forest, nor did they have a pheonix as a friend their entire lives, nor did they meet Hex. Also, seriously, calm the heck down. You make decisions without even thinking about them! Like that dragon stunt. Do that again and you might end up KILLING us. Thank you but i'd prefer not to be a dragon's dinner anytime soon."

Starry's retort hit Cynder like a brick wall. "W-Well... How was I supposed to know about that?! I grew up in Canterlot. Not exactly a lot of wildlife to interact with. The only reason I'm out here in the middle of a desert is because I want to learn about the world!"
