Midnight, for the first time in a few hundred years, was terrified. It showed in her eyes the most, her normally cold and narrowed yellow slit eyes now slightly more wide and alert. Her body was still under complete composure though, and no one would even notice a difference except for someone that had known her for quite some time.
And that someone was the very person she was desperately hoping to meet. She had a message delivered to the former Eclipse member by a personal runner. It was easier than trying to track down the damn pegasus on her own.
At that point she was sitting at the coffee shop that she had designated as the meet up spot. Her eyes were searching all around for a sign of Glaive, he had to be one of the first people to learn of this new development. Princess Celestia would be next, and the concept of that had her even more nervous. She just needed to break the news to someone personal first. Her body involuntarily shivered, it had never done that before.
"Come on Glaive..." She whispered softly, she could only hope that he had gotten the message. It was drawing close to the time she had said to meet. Another small twitch, she was starting to lose it.
Her mind wandered to the thoughts of her Lord husband Crayak running unchecked around Ponyville and it terrified her. What would he do in her absence? It had been a miracle she had managed to sneak away from him first to get the message out, but now to actually be in Canterlot. It then snapped to how Glaive would react, the assassin that had once resented her very existence before growing to be one of her closest and most trusted friends.

When someone earns the trust of Shining Glaive, there is no question as to how seriously he will take their word. And when that someone is an incredibly ancient and powerful entity in their own right, he only takes it all the more seriously. So when a message was delivered to him that Midnight Paradox needed to speak to him urgently, he dropped everything he was doing at the time and headed to the designated rendezvous point.
Midnight Paradox was a literal living legend, a demon that had lived in Equestria for millenia and had cast her support to Celestia in the War of the Sun and Moon. Since then, she had worked closely with the shadowy trio of assassins known to themselves and precious few others as Eclipse - the organization that Glaive and his wife had once belonged to themselves.
He made his way to the obscure little coffee shop that he and his friends favourited, and immediately saw Midnight sitting at their traditional table. Although to most eyes, she seemed the very picture of cool, collected poise, to Glaive's sight she was...terrified. Midnight Paradox being terrified, in turn, terrified Glaive. She was possibly the strongest thing Glaive had ever known, with the excpetion of literal gods and goddesses. What could possibly frighten her so? He hurried over and sat down across from her.
"Midnight," he began, "I got here as fast as I could. What's the matter?"

Midnight finally caught sight of Glaive as he began to approach the table. One of her most trusted friends was about to find out the biggest secret she had ever kept from everyone. This was not going to end well at all, and she wasn't even sure she was ready for what this reveal might result in.
Not being a creature to mince words or dance around topics, except in the presence of her Lord husband, she got right to it. This was going to be difficult enough without dragging it on unnecessarily.
"Before I came to this world, I was a consort and wife to Lord Crayak, one of the most powerful lords of hell. I was... We were both deceived." She sighed, this was painful to bring up, just thinking of her life in hell was making her desire to return even stronger. It had been a glorious life, one that had been so forcibly ripped away from her.
"Now, after so many centuries, he has retaken hell. And now he has come to Equestria to retake me." Why then, did she sound so uncertain? Surely she should be overjoyed that she could return to her lord husband, whose company she had so longed for, and to the life she had once lead.
Midnight shook her head slightly to dispel the dark thoughts clouding her mind. She managed to detach herself from the situation for just a moment to try and lighten the mood, "So you've got the lord of hell itself in Equestria, desperate to reclaim his lost plaything." She smiled, but it was sad and a bit forced.

Glaive stared. His mouth hung open and he had one hoof raised in the air, as though he was going to speak, but no sound came out. Eventually he closed his mouth and put down his hoof and continued just staring at her for a while.
Finally he found his words. "I...I see..." Rather weak words, really. He cleared his throat and continued speaking, more forcefully, but he kept his voice low.
"If you're as worried about this as you are, he must be a terrible foe. Where is he now? Have you told anypony else? Celestia? Luna? ...Wait, you were his wife? ...Have you told Seraph?"
Seraph Jael, the angel who was banished from Elysium several years ago, had become close to Midnight. Very close. Glaive couldn't help but imagine that the King of Hell was a jealous husband...
If he truly was loose in Equestria, it could be a calamity not seen for a thousand years.

Seraph... Oh gods, Seraph...
The angel who had grown to become the love of her life, the one who had made her forget all about the world she had come from and the pony who controlled her. How was Midnight supposed to face him now? This was almost more terrifying than facing Lord Crayek, though not for the same reasons. She was terrified that she would lose Seraph forever.
This day was rapidly going from bad to worse for the demon, her world seeming to crumble around her further every passing minute. "Why did this have to happen now..." She muttered in terror, "I've started a new life, I've moved on, and now it has come to drag me back."
She looked up at Glaive, her eyes holding a quality of depth and emotion they rarely ever displayed. "You're the first person to know." Midnight said, "And by that reaction, a meeting with the Princess will only end in disaster. And Seraph..." She couldn't even bring herself to put words to it.
"Am I supposed to leave with Crayak and return to my life as it used to be? After everything I've been through here?" It was the best option for Equestria, if Lord Crayak were to lose his composure it could only end in disaster. Her sacrifice would keep this from happening.
But it would involve ripping her away from all her happiness and the purpose that she had found with this new life.
"And Snowball... What will happen to Snowball if I have to make the choice?" Her daughter, her one connection with reality and the first thing that she had learned to truly care for. She stared down at the ground, "I'm lost Glaive. I don't know what I'm supposed to do."

Glaive sighed and put his hoof reassuringly on Midnight's shoulder. He could feel just how tense the demon was, and in truth, he didn't feel much better. This was a personal terror for Midnight, however, so it surely affected her much worse than it did him, which was a terrifying thought in and of itself. Not much terrified Midnight.
"Midnight...this might seem like a strange thing to hear, coming from me, but...you need to think of what's best for you. The way you're acting...I can tell that you don't want to go back to him, back with him. Like you said, you've built a new life here, right? Midnight...I'll be there for you. With you." He smiled. "We'll take back your life...together."

Midnight shook her head, "It's not just that simple though." The demon sighed softly, why did this have to be so complicated? "I still love him, or at least a part of me does. There was a reason I was with him for centuries before I was forced into this world, and a reason why I searched endlessly for a way back to him."
But the centuries that they had been separated had changed her beyond all recognition. "Could I change back? To the way I was before? Am I capable of that anymore?" She had been a monster, a ravenous sub-sentient creature by the mortal world's standards when she had first been found. But it had served her well in hell, and the freedom it granted her was so powerful. "I want to, and that's the worst part. For the longest time it's all I've ever thought of, all I've ever hoped for."
"Centuries of searching for a way back to the way things used to be, and now I have one and I don't know what I'm supposed to do with it..." Her shoulder started to quiver underneath the assassin's hoof. The physical contact was reassuring, it reminded her that she was still alive, and still grounded in reality.
"Things have changed though, because I thought I had needed to move on. But did I? Would I be feeling this conflict if I had held out hope just a little bit longer? What I've experienced lately is hardly even measurable in the lifespan of a demon..." Had this all been caused by her own impatience?

"I know it can't be easy, fighting against your base nature. I've known Wild Side long enough to see the truth of that - she still struggles with it every time the full moon shines in the night sky."
He sighed again, and reached out with his other hoof, and pulled Midnight into a gentle hug. Once, he would have laughed at the thought of hugging a demon...or, perhaps, shuddered in revulsion. But Midnight was his friend, and he wanted to help her through this trouble.
"I can't claim to know what eternity feels like. I can't say that I could fully understand the mind of an immortal being. But I've known more such beings than most ponies can claim, I think. You're time is unlimited. That's why you must treasure the limited time you have."

Midnight almost lost all control of her emotions when Glaive hugged her, the simple act from the monster hunter that had once despised her very existence. It was a good thing that he couldn't see her eyes at that moment, because they were quivering and the sight of that might just push Glaive over the edge. Such a display of emotion was quite literally unthinkable for a demon like her.
She managed to bring herself back under composure. "Of course Glaive." She said sadly, "I just have to figure this out is all, I need some time to wrap my head around this but with how things are looking I don't think I'll ever get the chance."
She broke off and gave a small nod, "I'm sorry to bring you out for this, I just needed to tell someone I trusted entirely before I told anyone else." This was going to prove to be difficult, each sub sequential reveal would hit her in a different way. Her loyalty to the princess, her care for Snowball, her love for Seraph, all would be taken into question... She needed to prepare herself for that.
"Thank you." She said with a small nod. "This means more than you could ever know."

Glaive smiled at the pony across from him. She may be an immortal demon with a bloodthirsty nature kept under tight control at all times, but she was his friend, and in the end, she wasn't that different. She had hopes and dreams and fears just like anypony else did.
"We'll think of something, Midnight. Now. You really should inform Celestia about this. If it's as grave as you believe it to be...we're going to need to pull out all the stops."

Midnight knew this was the only logical next step, the solar goddess needed to be informed about this potential disaster. But at the same time she wanted to believe he wouldn't prove to be difficult or a threat. As much as she knew it was only inevitible, she had to hope. After all, the last time she gave up hope was exactly how this whole mess had started.
"He's not a threat yet." She growled defensively, "I can contain him for the most part. My decision hasn't been made, and that should keep him in check for now." She sighed, "As much as I once needed him, he still needs me. I can use that." She hated playing with emotions, it was such a mortal thing to do, but it was all too necessary at this time.
"But I suppose an audience with the Princess is not unwarranted." She finally conceded. "At the very least, we can arrange a failsafe plan. Or perhaps there has been something all this time that she hadn't told me about this world's connection to our hell."
She still found it hard to believe that after all this time there was absolutely NO way to return to hell from this world. Perhaps the appearance of a demon lord might make Celestia more willing to divulge a secret or two that she might have withheld so far. As much as the Princess was a kind and gentle ruler, she still had her own agendas, and to think that wasn't the case was pure stupidity.
"If I refuse his offer though, things will get really bad really quick." She warned him, "I mean, a full scale demonic invasion is not even remotely out of the question. If he came all this way just for me, nothing is going to stop him. And if he thinks he has to burn down half of Equestria, he'll do it."
She shook her head in sorrow, "That's not something I want to subject this world too, that's not something it ever needs to experience."

Glaive hesitated. Midnight was a dear friend to him, but she had a point. A full-scale demonic invasion in the heart of Equestria would be calamitous.
"Might it be possible to seal him away? As was done with Nightmare Moon in your time, and with Discord."

"It's not out of the question. But keep in mind, neither of those solutions worked very well in the past, now did they?" Midnight shook her head slightly, "The safest way is to banish him back to hell. But the problem is, how do we get him back there. I've been hunting for a way back for thousands of years and I haven't found anything."
She sighed, "And he's still not a threat just yet." Perhaps she was wrong about approaching Glaive about this. This was a problem thousands of years in the making and she was trying to impress all this on him in the span of a few short minutes. But he seemed to want to think her husband was a threat and react to it as such immediately. He didn't seem to see it as another demon who has lost his way, and lost something dear to him.
It was the pony she had loved as far back as she cared to even remember. The most important thing to ever happen to her. She brought a hoof up to her forehead and sighed. "I'm going to talk to the Princess." The demon said, though she was more thinking out loud than actually speaking to Glaive at this point.
"I'm going to talk to her, and explain this, and she'll know what to do. She always has in the past." She took a deep breathe, and let it go. Who would have thought that the demon's best source of advice could potentially be a living goddess. After that would be her angel mate, which she was not at all looking forward to.
She looked back up at the former assassin, giving a small nod and a smile. "Thank you Glaive, again, for everything." Without waiting for a response, she stepped back from the table and shot straight up into the air before spreading her wings and bolting off in the direction of Canterlot Castle.

Glaive sat for a moment longer, his mind racing. This was a very sudden development. The release of not just any demon, but a demon lord, could well be nothing less than a disaster. And for all Midnight protested, that this Crayak was no different than she was, a lost soul far from home...he couldn't count on that being the extent of it. Any creature capable of taking Tartarus for themself would have to be ruthless and terribly powerful.
Glaive sighed and stood, leaving the coffee shop. There was a lot of thinking to do, and much preparation as well.
