"Cold... So cold up here..."

Far, far above the ground, higher than most Pegasus would dare to fly, Nova floated by, watching the ground move below. The city of Canterlot looking nothing more than a pebble in comparison to it's true size. If not for the enchanted breathing apparatus he wore, he would have been deprived of oxygen long ago. Still, ice crystals had formed on his coat and the glass of his goggles, making it glisten when the light touched it.

Nova rolled over to view the four LSF Pegasus that were above him. He and his team were practising an extremely dangerous insertion maneuver. Dropping in from atmospheric altitudes. They checked and double checked their gear, making sure that there were no tangled cords or loose straps in their parachutes. Now was the time for execution.

He gave the signal, turning back towards the continent below. He spread his wings and gave himself a boost towards terra-firma. Gradually, he gained speed as gravity took it's hold. He only looked back once to make sure his team was behind him. Upon confirmation, he turned his attention to the really big thing speeding towards him.

In no other situation would the ground look as threatening as it did now. Minutes passed and Nova gave the signal for chutes to release. He counted to three, then pulled the cord on his own chute, feeling the strong tug on his chest. The parachutes were small, and grouped into threes. Only meant to keep the ponies going at a manageable speed. After another minute, he pulled another cord, which released the harness, letting the parachute fly off behind him.

Thirty seconds.

By now the ice had melted and been beaten off of Nova's coat in the high wind. His uniform almost stood still as the wind passed it. He could make out the districts of the city now.

20 seconds.

He could see clearly the balconies of the castle, he swore he saw Celestia going back into her chambers. He could now make out the specs that were ponies, walking about like ants on a hill. The details of the buildings were coming in clearer and clearer.

10 seconds.

The landing zone was in sight, an entire area closed off specifically so they could land safely. The target was so close he could almost feel the dust between the concrete slabs. 3-2-1... Now! His wings flared outwards, catching the wind and pulling tightly on his joints. He grunted, but felt himself slowing, soon he would touch down, but if he was going too fast, he might break his legs, or worse.

The ground came speeding towards him, but he didn't dare close his eyes. He positioned his legs below and... *THWACK!*BAM*CLAP*BA-BAP!* He looked around now, the training yard surrounded him. He looked around to see his team had all landed safely. A successful training run if there ever was one.

"Good job, team!" Nova said in a muffled voice behind his breathing mask. He removed said mask and shook the thrill out of him. "That's it for the day, guys. Go get some rest."
"Maybe... It's time to forget..."

Boom Wing has a long school year behind him, having successfully completed his second year of young pegasi and gryphons to fly in Cloudsdale. It was a hard push for both his students and him; only the other teachers seemed to have it all too easy. Boom Wing did his best to hide his pain during the many flights and he felt that he was getting better at it. Whether it was hiding the pain or building an endurance for long flights he couldn’t honestly tell. He could tell that he was proud of what his students had accomplished and was humbled by their joy for him teaching them.

But with the school year done and out for a short portion of the year it was time for Boom Wing to move back to Canterlot as he had done last year. His father’s mansion was among the last relics of his family legacy that he had. It didn’t make sense to just continue to pay his family butler to house-sit while he was gone so he lived in Canterlot during his off-time. He also used this time to see a bit more of the city he defended from so far away and even show up at the occasional military-related event.

For now though he laid upon a low-lying cloud that sat above his mansion and stared at it. It seemed almost insignificant compared to the other mansions that neighbored it. Compared to his neighbors he seemed pretty insignificant. His neighbors were all nobles, rich business owners and the like. He certainly didn’t fit in among them, but luckily he didn’t have to. He could just drink his cares away at home and go out and enjoy Canterlot at any hour of the day. Maybe one day even find a mare that could tolerate him for longer than a night.

Boom rolled onto his back and stared up at the sky. It was the evening hours and the twilight sky seemed to be deciding between the color orange or dark blue, having some difficulty. The stars would come out soon come out. He stared off at the deep sky above him, almost longingly. Before long he spotted something. Not bright like a star, but dark. He assumed that during any other time of the day the five anomalies he was eyeing would blend into the sky. He watched as they seemed to be descending rapidly, like meteorites that didn’t burn up in the atmosphere. When they finally neared the ground they seemed to grow a long tail, which only when they were released did he determine were parachutes.

He had heard about special forces flyers during the war but he had never seen them in action. Other than the bombs he dropped, they were the only thing he had ever heard of that used them. He didn’t suspect that bombs were being dropped on Canterlot, especially after the parachutes were released and their payload hit the ground somewhere else. He was far too curious to know about what was going on to avoid this. He pushed off the cloud and slid off, doing a half-flip and catching the air with his oversized wings.

He glided silently to catch the five parachutes before they hit the ground and then take off to where he assumed the five objects they held had landed. It wasn’t too hard to spot the five LSF ponies who had landed only a few moments prior. Boom Wing landed nearby, being sure to keep some distance between them, though. The five parachutes were draped over his wings. He eyed the five LSF ponies and noted that they wore some special equipment that he hadn’t seen the military use before. “That was impressive. What altitude was that?” he called out to them.

Nova shook the slight pain out of his hooves. Landing from that height was a pain in the joints. He shoved his apparatus underneath his chestplate and heard the jovial call of another that was watching just a short ways away. He looked at the pegasus and smiled. “High enough.” Nova said plainly. “What can I do for you?” He asked, approaching the stranger welcomingly.

"Oh nothing, I'd assume. I'd heard rumor of the LSF doing 'suicide falls' of impossible altitudes during the war, but never seen it myself. I assume you're LSF?" Boom asked Nova. He took a moment to notice that the one who had stepped forward was actually a bat-pony. 'Yep. LSF alright.' he thought.

“Sure am.” Nova said. “Going on a couple years now. Best job I’ve ever had. That right there is a risky maneuver we used to get behind enemy lines. They don’t usually expect a pony to fall from the sky like a rock. Not that high at least. It was a good way to avoid Gryphon aerial scouting parties.” Nova gave himself a quick look over as he talked and readjusted his collar. “You interested in joining or something?”

Boom shot a look of some surprise at Nova. "The thought never really crossed my mind. I was apparently too reckless for even the Air Force." he explained. Another thought about how his wings ached every time he flew rose to mind as well, though he didn't mention it. "Why, the LSF recruiting?" he asked.

Nova shrugged. “The LSF is always looking for trainees.” He said. “They usually take large groups at a time, even if it’s just to fill one or two positions. If you think you’ve got what it takes, then I’d say give it a go. The worst that can happen is that you’re rejected.” And boy did Nova know how that felt. He used all of his allotted attempts at recruitment just to get into the training system.

"Well I'd say if that's only the worst that happens then it could be worthwhile. I've got a few months until I need to be back in Cloudsdale. How long is the training?" he asked Nova. He was, at this point, completely dealing with the hypothetical. Joining one of the most elite groups in Equestria might be the hardest thing he could do. With the current lack of a standing military the LSF, Royal Guard and a few factions of knights were all that stood to defend Equestria. Joining them became slightly appealing to Boom after all.

Nova gave a huff of a laugh. “A few weeks. But you have to have at least two solid years in the Lunar Guard and a mostly clean service record.” He said. “Though I’ll be the first to tell you that you can still get in after punching an officer square in his face. Even if he is on the review board.”

"Heh then I suppose I might just stand a chance, then." Boom stated with a grin. "You guys just gettin' off work? Wanna grab a drink?" he asked as he set the parachutes down on the ground.

Nova looked in the direction of his apartment. “Well, I was going to get a quick workout in… But I guess I could spare time for a drink. Don’t know about the other guys, they’re probably going to the Shady Trough, themselves.” Pretty much anyone who lived in Canterlot would be able to tell you that the Shady Trough was the hangout for Lunar Guardsponies. Known for being a bit rough, and a reputation for at least one fight a week.

"Well then I'll follow your lead if that's where yer headin'." Boom stated. He too knew of the Shady Trough. He knew that you basically had to know somepony to stay inside, otherwise getting thrown out by the LSF in a bar brawl was common. Military types and gangs exhibited such behavior, but for arguably different reasons.

“Well, alright, if you’re sure.” Nova said with a shrug. “I’ll just drop my equipment off, then we’ll go.” He was quick about putting his gear away, coming back with only his bare cloth uniform. He led the way by air, towards one of the more questionable parts of town. Soon they landed at the Shady Trough. The name was quite fitting, it looked pretty sketchy. Just as Nova was about to enter, a young private came flying out the door, landing on his back. Nova simply laughed, dusted him off, gave him a few words of encouragement, then shoved him back inside, following shortly after.

"My kinda bar." Boom Wing stated as he watched the private fly out before them. He watched how Nova handled the situation and saw it akin to how a brother might throw his sibling back into a brawl. He could see a sense of family here and he, admittedly, hid how nervous he was quite well.

Nova led the way inside, ducking just in time to avoid a bottle flying through the air, letting it hit the wall behind him. He gave a deathly stare in that direction. “Certainly are rowdy tonight.” He said as he walked to one of his favorite spots, a table near the center of the room. “Pull up a chair, promise it doesn’t bite. Not like the chairs we used to have.”
