“Well, as it is often stated, ‘it’s better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it’. Another invasion might just cripple Equestria, so it’s good to be prepared for that possibility. I think the high-level bombing was the most extreme tactic I’d done and that was often largely inaccurate. What’s some of the crazier things you’ve been up to?” Boom asked as they made a gentle bank

"Can't really talk about it." Nova said. "Most of it is just trial and error anyway. To see what works and what soldiers can adapt to. Test Tactics you might call them." Nova looked to the bell-tower where they had started. The bright moonlight reflected off of the building, making the polished stone stand out.

"I can tell you that we're being worked pretty hard though."

“Well we can only both hope that it pays off. Another proverb I believe in is ‘if you want peace you should prepare for war.’ though I don’t want to call Equestria’s military before the war complacent. It’s better that we train who we have on staff now. The Knights, the Royal Guard and the LSF. I’ve been weighing my options on whether or not I’d rejoin the military when they stand it back up, but that’s only if they’d take me.” he stated. The scenery of Canterlot’s evening hours was quiet, though there was still plenty of hoof traffic. There was the occasional flyer off in the distance and the scene had a surreal, relaxing tone to it.

Nova would have to agree with Boom's opinion. He didn't like war, but it was sometimes a necessity. And thus, the military had to be prepared for whatever it needed to do. "They might be willing to take anyone before long." He said. "I hear the marshal is working on the creation of a standing army. Much larger than the few thousand volunteers we have in the Royal Guard."

Nova looked at his watch. "In any case, can't fight a battle if you're late." He said. "I'll see you around, I gotta hit the shower and report in."

“Sounds good. I’ll be at the Well Away Tavern at eighteen if you’d care for a pint. Good hunting.” Boom stated as he banked away from Nova. He didn’t really have any other place to be tonight. Aside from asleep. The news of the Marshal bolstering the military was actually news to him. Odd, how even though he was in Canterlot, he now seemed alienated from politics being a civilian once more. There may be more to the story on why the Marshal would want more than the fair allotment of volunteers, though.

"Yeah, sure." Nova nodded in agreement. "I'll be there if I can." And with that, the encounter was over. The two went their separate ways. Nova to take a shower, and Boom to do whatever it was Boom did. Their conversation left him thinking though. What would a militarized Equestria look like? He chose not to ponder on it for too long and just enjoyed the quiet flight home.

Boom Wing didn’t have much to do for the night. He wasn’t a denizen of the moonlight hours like Nova was and he would be tired soon. He headed home for the night and slept away until the afternoon. He spent the noon just lounging about his place before heading to the tavern about a half an hour prior to their agreed meeting time. When he arrived, he found his favorite table and sat down, ordering a pint and taking in the atmosphere. He even found one of his old comrades and had a story or two before parting ways.

Nova yawned. It was only just after 1800, but that was still early for him. He wouldn't need to report to work for another couple of hours yet. At least he would be able to grab some breakfast while he was out this evening. He arrived at the specified tavern, looking around until he located his friend. He walked over to Boom's table and sat. "Evening." He greeted.

“Evenin’! Hope you don’t mind the environment. Not as rowdy as the Shady Trough, but it’s nice. Most of the folks here are prior military.” Boom described, pointing around the tavern. Sure enough, a few of the ponies there wore vests with unit and campaign patches on them. A few of them were injured and a couple still had the short haircuts that were common for the military. “So… I’ve been meaning to ask when the next training cycle is. I think it would be worth my while to enlist.” he stated as he took a drink from his pint.

Nova looked around at the number of veterans around the tavern. It was actually pretty interesting to know that this was a popular spot for those sorts of ponies. "It's nice and quiet." He said. "Which is totally fine with me."

Nova raised his brow at the question. "Really? You're sure you want to get back in?" He only asked because it seemed that Boom was having a fine enough time readjusting to civilian life with his civilian job.

“Well, I was mostly curious if you guys had some sort of reserve unit. If not then, then I’m still interested in joining. Civilian life is okay, but it isn’t nearly as interesting as the military life.” he stated. In truth he had a hard time, even now, adjusting to the life of a civilian. He casually took another sip of his drink. “Also, want something? It’s on the house.” he offered.

"Hmm. I'm dying for some breakfast right about now." Nova stated, noting his hunger. He hadn't bothered grabbing anything before he left the apartment because, well, he was coming here.

"Next cycle should be a couple of weeks from now if I'm not mistaken." He said. "They're always taking volunteers. So long as you can pass the pre-screening."

“Sounds good then.” Boom stated before stopping a waitress. He ordered the ‘Sunrise Surprise breakfast platter for Nova and a garden salad for himself. He wasn’t particularly hungry, having filled most of his belly up with beer by this point. “I’ll see about hitting up the pre-screening when it comes around. I figure if I can get in full time then I won’t need to teach any more. Not that teaching’s a bad gig.” he explained.

"If it's teaching you're into, instructors are in short supply right now." Nova said. "They can't keep up with all the new enlisted. It's pretty chaotic." Nova wished he had a nice glass of OJ right about now. Some fruit juice would hit the spot so early in the evening.
