It was so quiet here in the nursery. The lights had gone out, all the parents had gone to bed, and the young foals slept in their cribs. All but one, who slumbered in the hooves of an arguably evil entity.
"Hush little baby, don't say a word..." The voice rang silently through the halls of the manor. Sir Solaris' manor. "Mama's gonna buy you a mocking bird..." The subtle creaking of a rocking chair echoed in the room. "And if that mocking bird don't sing..." Two piercing eyes, deadly yellow, opened up. Looking to the entrance of the nursery. "Papa's gonna buy you a diamond ring."
Alpha rocked in the chair, holding the sleeping foal. to the side of the room, the caretaker had passed out, forced asleep by Alpha's power. She would wake up unharmed, but maybe not without a nightmare or two. He looked around at the small crowd of cribs and foals. They all were so blissfully unaware of the world, simply living their lives without real consequence. Alpha wished his life could be so simple.

Solaris was on edge. He had woken up in the middle of the night with his instincts screaming about danger. He got out of bed, quickly put on a steel corselet he had nearby and attached his blade harness to it.
Solaris opened the door to his room and stepped out into his manor, using his magic to tap into the many enchanted gemstones embedded throughout his home, feeling for presences he did not recognize.
Solaris' manor had an open door policy from sunrise and the doors closed at sunset, a tally was drawn up of how many ponies there were. There was one more than counted. Solaris took in a deep breath, there was an intruder but he did not know where.
His first stop was the common halls. His guards were still at their posts for the night shift... So they hadn't come through here. The kitchens were closed at night which meant... Solaris' eyes dilated as he came to the conclusion: The Nursery.
Solaris carefully moved closer and closer to the Nursery door, stood infront of it while taking in a deep breath and then opening the door with his magic, staying well away from the frame in case of an ambush or Trap.

Alpha grinned as the door opened, revealing just the pony he was waiting for. "Shhh." She said, putting a hoof to his mouth. "The children are sleeping." He said, continuing to rock in the chair. He looked at the foal in his hooves and shifted himself slightly. "Aren't they just precious this young?"

Solaris huffed as he saw it was Alpha, his magic enveloping his blade-harness but no weapon was drawn.
"You have a lot of nerve, Alpha." Solaris said, taking a small, tense step forward. "I didn't think direct confrontation was your style." He looked between Alpha and the foal.
"Why don't you put the foal back in its crib? You're here for me aren't you?"

"I know it's a dirty tactic." Alpha said. "But this was the only way I could get you to listen to me." He grinned at Solaris and kept rocking. "Besides. I haven't seen you in so long, we've got some catching up to do. Don't we? How've things been?"

Solaris shook his head "I'm not playing games with you Alpha. We aren't friends, not anymore. Or were we ever? Its hard to tell." He said as his lip rose in a bit of anger.
"I learned so much of this... 'Void' in the time between when we last spoke. Tinago gave me a good idea of what I was dealing with but so much remains unanswered." He said as he straightened his shoulders.
"You weren't always this, how did you fall into service with them anyway?"

The creaking of the chair stopped. Alpha's grin disappeared into the scowling glare he now gave him. He stared at Solaris for a good few moments. "Answer the question, Solaris." He said. "...How have you been?"

Solaris cocked an eyebrow, he reallly wanted to know how hes been? Solaris thought it was nonsense, still though: he wasn't just going to cooperate with a void minion.
"Answer mine first." He squinted at Alpha.

"You know, that's your problem, Solaris. Always gotta be in control of everything..." He gave the child's mane a soft stroke. "Maybe that's just the pompous high-born in you."

"Perhaps." Solaris said keeping his eyes locked on Alpha "But, its the coward in you thats using that foal as a shield." Solaris retorted "We can exchange barbs in the after-life; lets get to the point."

"Oh, I want talk and I'm the coward." Alpha said. "Who's the one who came down here with his weapon? Hm? That's how the great Solaris Strike answers his problems. With the edge of a sword, the forming of an army." He looked up at nothing in particular. "The routing of Diamond Dogs. Plan to kill the leader yourself, gloryhound?"

Solaris gave alpha a deadpan "You literally just described my job, I see you're also a genius." Solaris said with sarcasam heavily in his voice.
"I'm done talking to you: you're under arrest."

"How about that fellow Shortfuse? Hm?" Alpha interjected. "Been giving you a few problems I hear. I think it's pretty funny. You, a noble, against pretty much every other noble in the country. You'll never get your army at this rate."

"It isn't my army, lets make that clear. By taking the power of Equestria's military and centralizing it it allows this country to mobilize against threats fast... Thus it is then able to protect its citizens, like your son, from harm." He took another step forward.
"If ponyville was attacked by another country and Canterlot had to wait days to mount an actual defense, would you be angry? How would you feel if your family was violently torn asunder and the only response from the military is one thats a day late and a bit short?" He asked cocking an eyebrow.
"Currently it would take Canterlot 5 days to mobilize the local nobility's levies. And thats after they get word, ponyville may be on fire at this point. The fact of the matter is that without a centralized army Equestria is fragile." He explained as he still watched Alpha carefully.

Alpha grinned. He had him now. He stood, foal in hoof and started walking in Solaris' direction. "That's just what I was thinking." He said. "Believe it or not, I am on your side on some things." He stopped at an empty crib and deposited the child carefully.
