The Vehement Daughter Returns

Cynder had arrived from out of the country only a week ago. And in into Canterlot just two days ago. She had shared the stories of her adventures, and even managed to bring back some trophies to prove them to her stubborn brothers. Her mother had broken down into tears when Cynder had returned. She was always the dramatic type... Even though Cynder might have cried a little bit too. But don't tell anyone!

Right now, she was walking the streets of Canterlot with a small messenger bag. She had volunteered to bring a thick envelope from her father to their very good family friend, Sir Solaris. It had something to do with "Magic conducting alloys." or whatever.

Silent Wit moved through the streets, mind elsewhere. He had originally stepped out to get a break from the work, come back fresh. That, and to get some hay fries. Solaris insisted on real food, and that was a chore. Besides, he was saving the knight some money this way. The greasy bag of hay fries was tucked away in his saddlebags as he walked.

Eventually he rounded back to the street containing the gate to the Castor Estate. As per usual it was open door policy for ponies down on their luck. He's such a Goddesses-damned saint. Wit thought idly as he got to the gate. By this point the guards were used to seeing Wit, as he was helping Solaris with some matter. They didn't stop him as he started to walk by.

He stopped, something bright colored and unfamiliar catching his eye. By this point he had gotten stock of the regulars that stayed in the hall, and the almost golden earth pony mare with the red mane and black streaks that was approaching the gate wasn't one such regular. Wit's paranoia flooded his already working mind, and he moved up to her, before she reached the gate.

"Stop, who are you? What's in the bag?" Wit didn't really have much authority to stop her, but he didn't want to take the chance she was a threat. There had already been plenty of surprises Solaris had gone through in recent memory, one ending... explosively.

Cynder was about to happily stroll through the front gate, until she was contested just outside of the grounds. This certainly wasn't a normal occurrence around the manor, and Cynder wondered if perhaps this unicorn was some kind of hired security. But... He was kind of scrawny for that...

"C-Cynder, of the Ardor family." she replied. "Wait, what's it to you anyway?!" She questioned, regaining her confidence. She had taken on many a threat in her travels, she shouldn't be intimidated by this pony.

"You didn't answer my second question." Wit said simply, looking her over. Ardor. That's a familiar name. Canterlot high society. I still remember them from when I grew up here. Can't see her cutie mark... Athletic. No. Toned? Hm. Not purposeful, not simple health habit. Continuous use.

With the string of thoughts over he cleared his throat. "Recent events have prompted extra security. I'd like to know what's in your bags." Wit said this calmly, and a practiced air of authority. He had a faint Canterlot way of speaking, crisp and clear.

Cynder scrunched her nose and defended her bag. "Nothing for you." She said. "My dad said that this is supposed to go to Sir Solaris, and I intend on delivering. And besides that, it's rude to just start questioning random ponies off the street."

Cynder worked her way around the inspector and started towards the gate again. "Morning, Dusty." She greeted one of the guards who responded with a nod.

Wit just raised a brow as he watched her go. It's morning already? The idea that she was a threat in some way to Solaris was fading from his mind. Still, his paranoia wouldn't let it go and he followed her. Probably getting a disdainful look from Dusty. Oh, well.

He got a look at her cutie mark from behind. Campfire? I get it. Explains her figure, as well. "So, Ardor. You enjoy your last trip?" It was a probe. Not really to see what kind of a threat she was, but more to see how she would react. And if he was right. He liked being right.

Cynder looked behind herself to see the inspector following. "How could you tell I was on a trip?" She asked curiously. Though to be completely honest, the answer was. "Depends on which part of the trip." She said. "If you can call it that. It felt more like an expedition across the whole world."

"Your family, and your cutie mark, and your age, and your muscles." Wit said simply, as if that explained everything. He continued, however. "The Ardors are well-known for their variety of pursuits, depending on the pony. I'd say the mark represents something to do with camping and the like. Or you're just really good with campfires and that's it. If so, I'm so sorry. But, I doubt it. Judging by your relatively young age I'd say you just got your first chance to travel and test your skills. Seems you found some trouble, but you got plenty of exercise."

"So, what was the trouble on your 'expedition across the whole world?' "

Cynder gave the inspector a look. She wasn't much enjoying his snark. "My cutie mark represents my connection with nature, and my burning passion that I put into everything I do." She corrected him.

"And... Gosh, where do I start? First! My friend and I had to traverse the broken Leylands!" She said, stopping just before the door of the manor to tell her story. "We were able to avoid the constantly shifting terrain, and horrible creatures. But then we nearly ran out of drinking water on our way to Boardor. That's a country I won't be visiting any time soon. They kidnapped us in the scorched lands and tried to sell us as slaves WAAAAYYYY up in Ti!" She made a gesture that suggested a long distance.

"And you'll never guess what happened next! When they took us to the auction, we were bought and set free by THE Commodore Crimson Claw! Isn't that crazy?!" Her smile would suggest that she was pleased that such a thing happened. "He said that he would help us get home, but first we went north, up to The Breach and the floating Islands. There, we met some dragons that traded with us. Did you know dragons could talk by the way?"

"And after the dragons, we got into a fight with a huge swarm of GIANT SPIDERS! I took one of their fangs as a trophy. Oh gosh. And once we were done in the floating islands, we went to Heliopolis where the Commodore saw us to a ship that would take us home. And on the way home, we were attacked by pirates! It was so cool!"

Cynder's eyes beamed as she shared the story of her adventures.

Wit just sort of stared as the mare ran on and on about her adventures, one brow slowly raising. Is she for real? By the Goddesses... she's like an adult Whisper. He snarked internally, so as to avoid interrupting. He was trying to work on those manners he had developed over the years. Which is to say, trying to break them.

"That is... quite a tale, Ardor." Wit coughed politely and pushed the door to the manor open. "It does indeed seem you have found your... erm, passion. Yes." Seems like it was always there... "But if you have something for the marshal you should hurry. He is a busy pony, now more than ever." Though he'll enjoy a visit that is announced, the seeming rarity that is.

Cynder hummed in response. "He's not overworking himself is he?" She asked. "Mom always says that worrying too much about work is a surefire way to not get anything done." She turned again to the door and opened it, walking inside with energetic steps.

"So you have a name? Or should I just call you The Interrogator?" She over pronounced the title, giving it a bit of an edge.

Wit sighed. "No, not unless you want me to call you The Campfire Maker. I'm Silent Wit." They moved through the ponies living in the manor. "And no, he's not. He gets plenty of rest, and he's used to far worse conditions than a nice manor."

"How do you know him?" Wit briefly thought that The Interrogator was still an apt title.

"He's a good family friend." Cynder replied. "My dad's been doing some experimenting on materials that conduct magic well. I don't really know the science of it, but I think he made a breakthrough recently." As a matter of fact, it was about all her dad could think about. He'd even included a few samples of metal in the package for Solaris.

"I guess that doesn't make you any old hired help either though. You and he are friends?"

Wit instinctively struggled with that question, but got over it quickly. It was time he got over his hesitation to call his friends as they were. They were important to him, after all. "Yes, we have been for some time. Several years, by now."

"Materials that conduct magic? Like gems?" Wit raised his brow, at least slightly interested. The concept sounded useful, if nothing else.

"No, he was working with metal." Cynder replied, starting up the stairs to Solaris' study. "It was pretty expensive from what I understand of it. Apparently the best materials also happen to be the most hard to find. But that didn't stop my dad, no sir." She held her head up with pride as she boasted about her father.

"He once worked for a whole month without sleep! We were worried he was gonna pass out and fall into his furnace or something."
