The Vehement Daughter Returns

"I'm going to assume he didn't." Wit humored the mare, albeit with far less enthusiasm than she had. Magic conducting metals? What's Solaris going to do with that? Make another suit of armor? That will cost a fortune. He might have to go without a kitchen staff for a week. He snarked inwardly.

He idly remembered his hay fries and he hoped, at least a little bit, that his friend wouldn't notice the scent. Wit opened the door to the study. "You've got a social call." He announced simply.

Solaris looked up from behind his desk as Wit brought Cynder in. By what was on his desk, Solaris had been reading a lot of history books. In this case, history books detailing the military's history with diamond dogs.

Solaris smirked a bit and stood up, walking from around his desk. "I certainly wasn't expecting a visit... I would have figured you were too busy with your papers and hay-fries to play tour-guide." Solaris quipped.

"And Miss Ardor, its so nice to see you again. How is your father doing?"

Cynder snickered at the joke towards Wit, then turned towards Solaris. "He's been well." She said, opening her bag and pulling out a large sealed envelope. "These are from him, actually. He wants you to experiment with each one and figure out which ones you like better." The envelope jingled lightly from the metal plates that sat within, each labelled with a set of numbers.

And now that 'business' was concluded. "Boy have I got stories to tell you!" She said. "You'll never believe who I ran into on my travels!"

"Everypony needs a break, from work and from you insufferably insisting I eat whatever it is your cooks make on any given day." Wit opened his saddle bag now that he was discovered. "As for tour guide, she seemed to know well enough where she was going. Something of a trailblazer like that, it seems." Sure enough, one by one, hay fries began to levitate out of the bag, and into his mouth.

Wit eyed the envelope. He was curious and was trying to figure out what his friend could want with such materials. As Ardor regaled her story he munched on hay fries and looked in thought, eyes occasionally going for the envelope again.

Solaris took the envelope in his magic and began to open it, giving wit an annoyed look.

"You need to eat and the food they make is good. You overwork yourself and forget. Those hay-fires don't count." He said smirking as he finished opening the envelope pulling out the metal sheets.

"Please do go on Cynder, I want to hear all about it."

"WELL." Cynder started. "After a friend and I made it to Appleloosa on hoof, we walked all the way through the broken leylands! We hardly got any sleep. And the ground was changing all the time. And to make things even crazier, we had to sneak past some really weird creatures."

Wit grumbled something about hay fries and their nutritional value but shut up when Cynder began to speak. It sounded like an abridged version of the adventure, but he didn't complain. The sooner this was done the sooner he could get a look at the magical metal.

His interest was piqued.

Solaris listened to Cynder's tale nodding his head "That is very exciting!" He said as he picked up each piece of metal probing it with his magic. He stopped upon the one numbered 5.

"Did your father tell you exactly what his breakthrough was, Cynder?" He said as he got up and began to walk around the table, intently studying the piece of metal in question.

"Hm? Oh, uh..." Cynder had to try and remember what her father said about his discoveries. "Something about finding the best balance between magically conducive metals and quality steel. To keep the strength of the metal good enough for combat, but easy to use with magic."

"But where was I? Oh yeah! And then, after almost freezing to death on our way through boador, we were KIDNAPPED by slavers and taken all the way across the ocean to a country run by pirates called Ti!"

Wit took a moment to map out the steps on Cynder's adventure thus far, the map in his head forming. She had covered an impressive distance. Ti was a country far removed from Equestria, even having heard of it was rare.

Of course, his focus returned to the metal. Magically conductive materials and quality steel. Are these various alloys? Weapon or armor? Both? Weapon out of this seems unlikely with his shardblade... so that would logically leave armor, though there are of course still unlikely alternatives. But, more importantly, to what purpose?

"Slavers." Solaris repeated as he began to focus on the metal again. "I'm relieved to know you got out of that jam but... How? I'm sad to say most beings that are pressed into slavery never get out of it..." He said trailing off a bit as his eyebrow quirked as the metal plate he had in his magic seemed to buckle on an atomic level, looking more akin to a liquid than a solid.

The metal plate condensed into a tightly packed marble sized orb. Solaris seemed to pull at the metal again and this time it expanded and formed into a star.

"A magical material so sensitive to magic that its structure can be changed at will. This particular alloy seems to require more coaxing... But this is good work."

"OMIGOSH, that's the best part!" Cynder said. "You'll never guess who bought us and then set us free. None other than the Commodore Crimson Claw!" Cynder paused to gage the reactions in the room. "I know, I couldn't believe it either! It was terrifying! But when he set us free he let us work on his ship!"

Wit raised a brow. "Commodore Crimson Claw?" The name was familiar, and it was hard to fathom the commodore releasing slaves to become deck help. Not that he had reason to doubt the young noble, especially when he was mind was on much more important things.

It's magically malleable? The applications for armor are interesting... Same with weaponry, a blade that is there and then not. Though, again, that is already accomplished with his current choice in weapon.

What are you doing, Solaris?
