Alpha scoffed. "The crown? Really?" He rolled his eyes and continued his pacing, stopping to peek out the window. "Come on, inspector. You're not living up to your name at all. Think about it. The Diamond Dogs? The crime rates? Left and right, officials are having their names tarnished. Not to mention the mercs in the east. All of this so shortly after an orchestrated war."

He looked to Wit again. "Getting a clue now?"

"... Orchestrated war?" Wit paused. "Okay, you've caught me off-guard. What, are you going to tell me it was all some big excuse to see how pretty a balefire bomb burns?"

"And now I know you're insane, because what you're implying is that you don't want to take Equestria, but that you want to bring down Equestria. And for what purpose could you want that?" Wit swiveled in his chair to look at Alpha.

He studied the spy hard, sizing him up. Something about the conversation kept bugging him, and he had just put a hoof on what. "Alright, I'm interested, please, tell me more. But first, I've got a question. You keep calling me 'inspector.' I haven't been one of those for eight years. I'm flattered. Assuming you did your research, that is."

"Harldy." Alpha replied. "My job was simply to get Zebrica involved. And it worked out splendidly. The balefire bomb must have been someone else's part of this complicated puzzle." He said.

"Equestria is a relic. It's past it's expiration. Outdated ideals and not even a standing army. I'm surprised they survived at all, let alone fend off three fronts. Three! Are you kidding me?! It's high time it died and was reborn as something radically different."

"Your old pal Clandestine likes to talk about you." Alpha said. "I'm sure he would have wanted to be here, but he'll understand. Can't have him distracted while he's doing his job for me."

Wit opened his mouth to retort something actually heartfelt and inspiring about Equestria and its ideals and how they'll never die. While it would have been laden with snark and deadpan, he thought that it probably would have made Solaris proud.

That is, until the magic word was said. Of course, it didn't have as much of a shock on him as it should have. He did know that Clandestine was working with Alpha. It wasn't quite stunned silence, but he still swallowed whatever words he was about to spit out.

"Clandestine is working with you? I should have known. He has a penchant for the dramatic and this is nothing if not dramatic. Interesting. He come to you, or the other way around?"

"Oh I recruited him." Alpha said. "He has certain connections that I don't have time to form. I put up with his flamboyance because he's useful." Alpha took in a deep breath.

"Well, as much as I love conversing with you, I think it's time I put an end to the suspense." He took the knife that he'd been carrying and polished it on his sleeve a bit. "I'll make it quick. I'm nice like that."

"You ought to kill him, you know he'll get bored, eventually." Wit said, in an attempt to buy more time. Hopefully it would be enough to let him figure out a plan of escape. No, I'll never get away from him. I'm not fast enough and he has wings. Starting to wish I could teleport... I have the shield, but it won't stop him. He'll just go grab somepony else and...

An idea sparked, but he would have to have some great timing. Great timing and positioning. He just had to hope it would work. He leaned down in the chair, toward Alpha. "Well, it wasn't a bad life, you know?"

Alpha snickered again. "I don't know, sounded pretty terrible to me." He said, positioning himself beside Wit. "Hold still now." He hovered the blade an inch away from the back of Wit's neck. He pulled back, then brought death down swiftly towards the unicorn.

"I don't know, I think you're neglecting the part where I outsmarted your new friend!" Wit shouted, and suddenly his horn ignited and he made formed a very concentrated, but very small shield at the back of his neck to drop the blade. Regardless of whether or not it worked, it would give him the time to roll away, touching his horn to the floor as he did.

A part of the floor ignited, various symbols glowing a deep green light as a shield formed from the floor and encased around Alpha. He stood and looked it over. "Good, it worked."

Wit straightened his vest and fixed his hair before continuing. "You should find that impenetrable, but you're welcome to hack and slash it as much as you like. You will realize your choices are suicide or imprisonment. Your choice."

The blade bounced off the shield and then suddenly Alpha found himself in a magical prison. "... You know that quick death I was talking about?" He asked. "Yeah, that's not happening anymore."

Alpha brought a hoof back and punched the shield as hard as he could. Nothing. Then he leaned forward and bucked. He saw the shield flicker a bit that time. Once more, with a devilish grin, he bucked and the site of impact visibly cracked. Alpha saw it and then looked at Wit with an evil smile.

"Well, that's not right..." Wit actually got close to the breaking shield and looked over the symbols on the floor quickly. "Oh, I see, I didn't actually complete 'unbreakable.' I swear, long dead runic languages are almost as fussy as Equestrian..."

Of course, he backed up when the shield started to actually break. "Okay, uh... well..." Wit promptly began running for his life at that moment. He used his magic to grasp the door's inner workings, opening it inward despite the missing handle. He ran left down a hallway.

"Intruder! Everypony find shelter and lock your doors!" He yelled as loud as he could, actually hesitating a little at the end of the hallway so Alpha would chase him down. Wit couldn't let anypony else get hurt, after all.

One last buck and the shield finally shattered. Alpha grasped the knife and sped out of the room and to the left following Wit. The halls were just wide enough that he could fly down them with no problem.

"Should have sat there and died, Wit!" He shouted after him.

"Who the hell does that!? Who just sits and dies!?" Wit called back, incredulity still clearly heard in the shouting voice. "That's stupid, a lot like your plans, and selection in friends!" It was an incredibly insult, but it would hopefully fulfill the goal of getting Alpha to follow him. Some guards thought perhaps it would be good to head off the intruder, but Wit warned them away as quietly as he could as he rushed past. They had no chance against the spy.

"Better hurry! I might actually escape at this rate!" Wit called back over his shoulder, which was his fatal mistake. He was faster than he thought, and hit the stairs in front of him before he was ready. He tumbled down them with a pained yelp and following grunts. Eventually he rolled to a stop a few feet from the bottom.

The room he had tumbled into was actually one of the larger entrance rooms into the mansion. He was currently at the center of it, with the staircase he had fallen down leading into two different parts of the mansion. The other end was a double door to the outside, and the walls had arched windows. There was plenty of space to fly.

Wit rolled over and started to get up, moving to the door. It wouldn't be fast enough.

A hoof touched down hard behind the former inspector. Alpha grabbed Wit by the collar of his vest and pulled him up to his level, a look of annoyance on his face. He lifted the blade high above his head. "I hope you have better last words than that." He said, not allowing any time for a response before bringing the knife down fiercely. "Die!"

The whistle of a flying blade sliced through the air, followed by the sharp clash of metal colliding, shattering both blades before either could bite into flesh. Before either pony could react, a green and red blur slammed into Alpha, knocking him away from Wit. The newcomer placed himself between the spy and the inspector, a grim expression on his face as he stared Alpha down.

"I told you," Glaive said coldly, "...that if you turned against Equestria, I would kill you. This more than qualifies."

The retired assassin kept himself between Alpha and Wit. While he absolutely would kill Alpha if he could, keeping the inspector alive was his first priority.

"Get out of here, Wit. You can't fight him."

Realizing that he would become more of a liability than any sort of help in the coming showdown, Wit rolled over and began to stand. "Yeah, thanks for that stunning rev-"

He was cut short by a noise of pain. As he stood he became agonizingly aware of the fact his right foreleg was broken, most likely from the tumble down the stairs.

"Damnit." Wit cursed. He was originally planning on going out the door, and perhaps getting lost in Canterlot. He didn't think he'd make it very far, or very fast for that matter, even with the magic he was about to preform. That left hiding in the large mansion. His horn ignited and his right foreleg glowed in the green magic. It would take most of the weight off, but any weight on a broken leg wasn't pleasant. He rushed back up the stairs and down a different hall from the one they had emerged from, doing his best to ignore the pain as he did.
