The best defense is...; More spies.

Shortfuse stepped out of his preferred drinking establishment in upper Canterlot. He wasn't drunk by any means, he had just spoken to a contact that brought him good news.

Equestria would be safe soon, and it would be all because of him.

Being the paranoid pony he is Shortfuse took a rather round-about route back to his home, snaking in between some larger buildings. He always thought the alley's were safer than the streets.

It had been an interesting day in Canterlot for Jane. She had concluded her meeting with Silent Step, Solaris Strike and Silent Wit the night prior and had taken care of her target in Canterlot in the morning. Her target would now have to deal with a crippling degree of criticism and distrust. Public figures were easy to deface when you could become them. Jane had just that idea in mind for a specific pony that Solaris had mentioned earlier; Shortfuse.

She had watched him in the bar, soon leaving and changing her appearance back to that of Bella Dientes, her unused foreigner disguise. She would be unfamiliar in Canterlot, at least until she could steal Shortfuse's identity and wreak havoc. Once Shortfuse had left the bar, Bella kept on eye on where he might travel. She knew Canterlot's alleyways as well as any street urchin would, often using them to escape pursuers. This time she used it to walk out of an alleyway before Shortfuse, almost bumping into him. "Oh, excuse me sir." she apologized, backing up a moment and blinking a few times to observe him. "Going my way?" she asked with a subtle hum.

Shortfuse wasn't very surprised given his facial expression. He simply stared at the mare. "I doubt it. I know every highborn that lives in Canterlot, and you don't live here." He said in a polite, non-assuming tone.

"So who're you visiting?"

"Oh, nopony in particular. I bring perfumes and scents from outside of Equestria and sell them in Canterlot, since the highborns can afford my wares." Bella stated before turning to walk with Shortfuse, as if resuming his direction. "Though I wouldn't mind visiting a highborn, either." she added, noticeably eyeing Shortfuse.

Shortfuse resumed his path when Bella started to walk again.

"I can give you suggestions, though none would be receiving visitors at this hour." He said, the innuendo not lost on him.

"I'm Shortfuse. Who do I have the pleasure of speaking too?"

Bella's pace was almost a prance, exuding an elegance in her gait that only the posh upper-class of Canterlot might show. "Bella~." she answered. "Bella Dientes. What suggestions do you have, Mister Shortfuse? Canterlot is terribly bland at this hour."

Shortfuse looked thoughtful a moment.

"Solaris Strike, Lord Valour or Lord Lumber. They seem in desperate need in of companionship and their doors are open for a few more hours. Except Solaris." His eye twitched a bit.

"The bastard has an open door policy." He said with a very strong hint of venom. "Valour is prench, I'm sure he likes perfumes."

Bella managed to look away from Shortfuse casually before she rolled her eyes. Returning her attention at the end of his speech she spoke once more. "Hmm, it sounds as though this Solaris character needs a good cologne if the mere thought of him is so foul. Or perhaps I could interest you in something more uplifting?" she replied as she trotted alongside him.

Shortfuse visibly tensed a bit. It was pretty clear he was done with the entire conversation.

"I don't have time for foreign whores." He said before quickening his pace.

Bella let out a frustrated huff. She had made the mistake of assuming that Shortfuse had any sort of flirtatious, fun or promiscuous side. Now he was getting away and she either had to act quickly or devise another, more difficult, method to defacing him. The idea of actually removing his face came to mind, though that was macabre, even for her standards. She retrieved her pen from seemingly nowhere and jumped at Shortfuse, stabbing him wherever she could with it. The pen would inject a fast-acting poison that would not kill Shortfuse, but instead quickly put him to sleep. Aside from the terrible hangover when he would wake up, there would be no side-effects.

Shortfuse wasn't exactly expecting that... And didn't even notice until the pen was already through his pelt. He shoved Bella off of him violently and stumbled a bit.

"Knew it..." He quietly mumbled before falling face first into the ground.

Bella quickly found her footing after being shoved. When Shortfuse hit the ground she stood triumphantly and stowed her pen once more, visibly disappearing from sight into her pelt. "'Knew it'? Hmph. If you knew that was going to happen, it would not have been hard to stop me..." she retorted to her incoherent victim. She lifted him with her magic and began to trot off with him, heading for a nearby dumpster. She had a confidence in her step, holding the same kind of pride as if just smacking an enemy in the face.

Thwack! An arrow landed squarely into the top of the dumpster. It was obvious it was a warning shot. When Bella turned around she'd see three unicorns with recurve bows on a nearby rooftop, dressed in black. One of them knocked another arrow.

Two other Pegasi came into view from the turn Bella took, also in black.

One of them spoke up, having heard her comment. "Who says he didn't." The pegasus said, blocking off the way she came from.

Bella's ears flattened backwards as she observed the scene around her. Again, the situation pressured her for an immediate action. The tables had turned so quickly that she scantly realized how much on the losing side she was truly on. There was a quick, hopeful thought that Alpha actually was observing her rogue activities and would jump into the rescue. By the time she could think of a hasty plan, such did not occur.

She levitated her unconscious hostage between herself and the three archers on the rooftops, blocking their shot. She then turned tail and fled as quickly as she could, releasing her magic and dropping Shortfuse somewhere along the way. Upon reaching the turn in the alleyway, she would continue to flee, hoping for an escape.

It would seem that these ponies were not the simple minded guards Bella would have expected. They only allowed a single route of escape and once Bella turned that corner a rather large Earth pony, come out of the darkness attempting to knock Bella flat with one hell of a hay-maker.
