The sun was setting over the household of a certain member of the noble class. All sorts of nobility were arriving in their fancy carriages, some escorted by a bodyguard or two. Mostly it was families showing up to make appearances or find business partners.

Pretty soon, the Ardor family arrived at the large mansion and disembarked from their carriage. They were all dressed formally, even Cynder, who hated these kinds of parties. If her father hadn't deliberately exaggerated, she probably would have made up a story about being busy. After being begged by her mother, Cynder wore a nice looking deep blue dress. She would have rather eaten her armor.

She broke off from her family as soon as the snack table came into view. She was practically starving because she hadn't eaten in hopes that there would be good food. She didn't have such high hopes now. But at least there was dip.

Daring Debonair, clad in a pressed pinstripe vest, his indigo bow tie and his monocle. He smiled, the grin visible beneath his perfectly trimmed mustache. He made his way through the courtyard and into the foyer. A few of the ponies stared as he walked by, which wasn't surprising. The dashing pirate hunter was somewhat of a heartthrob for some of the Canterlot royalty.

Once he was in the party proper, he looked about. He didn't particularly enjoy parties. The food was nice, some of the ponies had interesting things to say, but dancing got old rather quickly. It wasn't that the high life wasn't for him, he rather enjoyed it, but he would prefer to be on the sea. Unfortunately, he had convinced several nobles to help fund him, and he owed the explanations to them. Conveniently, the only time they had time for such reports was at these parties, when they could flaunt to their friends that they were helping Equestria by keeping the seas safe.

He glanced over the food table, and noticed a filly who was spending more time with the food than with ponies. Of ponies that have something interesting to say, they were usually the ones not interacting with the party. He moved over there, sliding next to her.

"You know, I can always spot the ones who would rather be somewhere else. It's a habit you pick up, coming to these things. Though might I suggest you use one of the complimentary plates and find a seat. Some of the ponies are starting to stare."

Cynder, with a mouth full of whatever it was, looked up at the stallion that had approached her. She then looked at the faces that were staring her down. His advice was probably the kind that you were supposed to take. She reached for one of the lager plates and piled a few treats onto it. "Sorry." She said with an embarrassed smile. She forgot for a moment that her mother actually taught her manners and that this was definitely the place to use them

"No problem, miss. I just thought I might save you before you get a talking to later." Debonair gestured to an empty table and walked over with her, after she had filled her plate of course. He also grabbed a few things, the snacks were tasty, after all.

"What's your name, if you don't mind me asking? I'm, well... I'm called Daring Debonair." The pause was brief, as if he had to remember.

Cynder sat at the table, thankful to be saved from that potentially embarrassing situation. "Cynder Ardor." She introduced herself. "My dad knows a lot of the ponies here I guess. And how to trick me into coming from work."

"Ardor, yes. I know of your family. All about following your passions, right?" At least he was pretty sure of that. He started nibbling on his snacks, enjoying the flavor more than the sustenance.

"What's your passion? I assume it ties to your work, or am I wrong, Miss Ardor?"

Cynder smiled and proudly stated: "I'm in the Equestrian Rangers. I get to travel all over helping ponies. I've already fought off a whole band of bandits all by myself!" A whole band was probably stretching it. It was maybe six? And she only fought one of them.

Debonair flagged down a passing waiter and grabbed two glasses of sweet white wine. "I don't know if you drink, but we can always grab the juice stallion as he walks by."

"The Equestrian Rangers, huh? Impressive for a filly so young. I take it you don't like it here at all, then. You much prefer the great outdoors. Have you go on any grand adventures in your time?"

Cynder took the wine. She was no stranger to alcohol, but she wouldn't dare tell anyone but her father that. "Wine is fine." She said. "These kinds of parties are just so... Boring. The band is practically dead, droning on the same old classical music they always play. And there's never anyone interesting worth talking to."

"But grand adventures are where I'm a specialist at! Not too long ago I came from an adventure way out west! I even went as far as the floating Isles."

"I don't particularly mind classical, but something with a little bit of a beat would be nice, occasionally." Debonair responded, smiling. "Though I hope I'm interesting enough, Miss Ardor. I feel the same. You get used to finding the ones that are fun to talk to, however."

"The floating isles? Impressive. I intend to sail that way, one day. Unfortunately it's far off for the moment. What were they like?"

What were the Floating Isles like? Well there was really only one way to explain it. "They were the most amazing, awe inspiring, magical places I have ever been to in my whole life." She said with wonder in her eyes. "You think... If you ever decide to go... You could take me with you? I would love to go back!"

"I don't see why not, Miss Ardor. The ship could always use extra hooves, and you seem plenty capable. I'll let you know if we ever set out that way. My first priority is pirates, however. If you ever want to sail the high seas roaming for the dogs, we'll be glad to have you."

Debonair made it a point to remember to chart a course for the isles for future use.

Cynder let out a joyful squeak. "That would be more than amazing!" She said. She finally took a sip of her wine. "I don't think pirates will be too much of a problem. I didn't say who I sailed to the Isles with. The notorious war criminal: Commodore Crimson Claw." She said his name in a whisper, as if it was taboo to speak it.

"Commodore Crimson Claw? Is that so? How did you get out from under his stinking paw, then, Miss Ardor?" By all accounts, the dog was quite brutal and very reminiscent of most of the diamond dogs during the war. Which was to say, surprisingly and disturbingly cruel.

Cynder loved telling this part of the story. The part where the brave heroine is kidnapped by the brutish slavers. "Well, you have to go back a bit further. Back to when I was still wandering the Scorched Lands with my traveling companion."

"I was sleeping and she was keeping watch, but Boarian slavers managed to sneak up on us in the dead of night! They roughed us up pretty good, and they didn't smell great either. They took us to their ship where we sailed all the way to Ti. And at the slave auction that I first even saw the commodore."
