Wit's cast itched. It itched always. It itched incessantly. It took all of his willpower not to rip the damn thing off and go to town. But he wouldn't heal that way, and it was a very real possibility he would need his leg sooner rather than later.

Thankfully, his job didn't require much movement. He didn't do a whole lot of legwork, as information usually came to him. That was the good news. The bad news is that now another set of ponies continually wanted to check on him. It was barely bearable with the kitchen staff, checking to see if he had food on Solaris' orders. Now it was medical ponies that had to check his leg. And he couldn't let them in the room with the sensitive information, so he would have to carefully move elsewhere.

It was a hassle, one he didn't want. Even if the whole process took less than five minutes. It was five minutes better spent.

Currently he was looking over a stack paperwork about some obscure data that only might be linked to the current case. He was grasping at straws, but it had worked before. A tray of untouched food was on the edge of his desk, featuring a cold omelette, a grapefruit, and what looked to be extraordinarily soggy cereal.

Jane had managed to find her way into Solaris' manor once more. She had left Shortfuse's rather inhospitable dungeon just that morning and now left still tired and in need of a good breakfast. Once she was convinced she wasn't being followed any more she changed her appearance to a random pony and made off to find Solaris. Unable to find him, she did learn that Wit was within the manor and that he was injured. With that in mind, she decided she might make a sick call to check up on him. After breakfast, that was.

Jane had made her way into the kitchen and managed to make a sizable cup of French Vanilla coffee, oatmeal and a 'morning grain' salad with a cup of orange juice as well. She loaded all of this onto a tray and headed over to where he had heard Wit was staying. She had soon found a place to change her appearance once more before entering the room and changed to a white coat with red streaks running through her similarly white mane and tail. Her cutie mark was a generic medical + sign and she headed into the room where Wit was staying in, shutting the door behind her.

She set the tray down at a nearby table, despite seeing the tray of cold food beside it, or any protest Wit may have to the idea. She then sat down beside the tray and took a sip of the coffee, silently eyeing him over. His newfound injuries were something new to her.

"Excuse me, you don't come in." Wit said, looking up to glare at the nurse as she opened the door. It probably wasn't her fault, he was just pissy. Of course, he tensed when she wordlessly continued into the room and sat the tray of food down. When she started eating it, he became even more concerned.

Female, unicorn, disguised as a nurse. Clearly knows who I am, came here specifically, and keeps bloody eyeing me. She brought a tray of food in, for herself. Interesting. An assassin wouldn't want to leave any trace, but she's sitting there eating. The spy, Jane? The probability is high, and it would make sense to disguise herself. It wouldn't look all that unusual for a new face to be around, if they were medically oriented. Keeps her safe from anyone watching the manor. Possibility still remains for this mare to be an assassin however. It wouldn't do to reveal Jane, were I wrong.

The string of thoughts and deductions was had in less than a second, and it wasn't long at all before Wit replied. He seemingly looked away from the mare, back to his work before speaking. "If you're here to kill me do make it quick. And if you could do without the gloating, that would be great."

Jane stopped set her coffee down after Wit spoke, his words barely provoking a reaction from her. She then casually walked over to where he sat and raised a hoof, as though she might actually hurt him. She then gave a prodding jab to Wit's cast before sitting down beside him. "Where'd you get the battle trophy?" she asked, with no attempt to disguise her voice from the last time she spoke.

Wit's ears twitched a little as he recognized the voice, but it only took a little more difficulty to disguise a voice than a mane or coat color. His paranoia was telling him to play it safe, it would be better that way.

"From a rogue spy. He thought to pay me a visit personally. I was almost flattered, actually. It pained me so when he left, it broke a little part of me." Despite the fact Wit thought he might still be dealing with an assassin, he was keeping his cool. It helped that he had made his peace with death eight years before.

Jane cocked an eyebrow at Wit, rather surprised at his answer. She turned away, moving to sit behind the food tray again. "Hm. Interesting. So you'll fight for your life when he's trying to kill you, but you'll let me just have my way? How flattering." Jane saidb efore raising her cup of orange juic e and drinking from it.

"What can I say? I'm a sucker for a pretty face, and Protocol? He does not have a pretty face. A little bit disturbing, really." The former inspector continued the back in forth. It was keeping him alive, for now.

In truth, Wit had refreshed and properly applied the runes beneath the carpet on the floor. All it would take was a spark of magic as he left the area around the desk, and she would be trapped inside.

Wit always had a plan. The unfortunate part is that she had already gotten so close, and his mobility was hindered.

Jane smirked at Wit's words, setting her empty glass down. "I'll keep that in mind if and when I have to kill you. I'll send you the prettiest escorts I can find, though finding some that can tolerate you may be tricky. Most mares can look past a scarred face, but an attitude like yours..." she replied before leaning in to take a bite of the salad on her plate. It was obvious at this point that she wasn't there to kill Wit. Not yet at least.

"Hm, please don't spend any money on my death, I'm not worth it, really. Though, as a request, I prefer cremation, I think. Or just toss me in the Fillydelphia river." Wit shrugged, completely non-chalant. "It's where I ought to be. You know, whichever's easier for you."

He decided the time to play games over with, he had to make sure this was Jane. There were ways to determine that, hopefully without this potential assassin from catching on. "Though, after our first conversation, I figured you would kill me yourself. Something about redefining my definition of death?" Wit breathed in, looking skeptical. "Better top jumping off a building, then, Jane."

Her response would determine if he was about to die or not. At least he would see it.

Jane had seemed hardly phased as Wit spoke, opting instead to eat her salad to compensate for her lack of breakfast. Though when Wit said her name she visibly tensed, looking up at him with a subtle glare. "I think I can top that." she remarked, soon drawing a stiletto and setting it on the tray. "My offer still stands. You've yet to betray me, though. It's interesting that Alpha didn't mention anything about trying to kill you. I'd figured that he was off doing something useful or important while I was busy betraying my government for him." she said before starting on her oatmeal.

"Ooh." Wit put a hoof to his chest, looking like he had just taken a blow to the chest.

"That hurts, and here I was doing my very best to keep you safe from just such an eventuality of Protocol coming to attack me himself. You might have noticed, were you any good at paying attention, that there's not a shred of information from you in this room. Nor anything that could lead to any indication that we have insider only information."

"Though, speaking of information, maybe we can stop the dance and you could share something useful." Wit paused.

"Unless this was a social call, and you just wanted to eat breakfast with me. I'm afraid I'll have to pass, the omelette is cold, grapefruit is... wrong, and cereal is a mess to eat."

That being said, the trash bin next to his desk had plenty of slightly greasy brown paper bags, in addition to plenty of balled up pieces of paper.

Jane continued to eat her food nonchalantly as she listened to Wit talk. She rolled her eyes when Wit said that he had hidden information that might implicate her. "Oh Celestia forbid you do your job right." she muttered before eating the rest of her oatmeal. Her food done she straightened herself before talking again. "I'm shocked and appalled, Wit. It's almost as if you don't enjoy my company. But no, if this were a social call I would have brought you some of that fast food you've been feasting upon and a whiskey bottle. I can deduce that eating healthy food when you're trying to recover is a concept far outside of even your investigative findings." she replied before looking around. "So where's Sir Solaris Strike?" she asked him.

"Oh? We want to talk about doing our jobs right? Funny, isn't your job to know what your little trifecta of bad is up to? You know, like Protocol's activities? 'Head's up, Alpha might try to kill you soon, Wit. Just so you know.' Yeah, that would have been good to know, as long as we're on the subject of doing our jobs right."

The ever so slight Canterlot uppercrust accent revealed a little bit of irritation after the imitation. Perhaps Wit was truly bitter about the broken leg.

"My investigative findings are that I can eat whatever I bloody want, thank you." Not that he was actually doing much of that, with his broken leg. He didn't like being gone from the room for long, and the only shop with fries worth getting was too far on the leg.

Wit let out a sigh. "We can learn to get past each other's... sterling personalities after this ordeal is over..."

He cleared his throat and began speaking, beginning with his friend's formal title first. Wit didn't want people getting the wrong impression. "Sir Strike is still south, dealing with the diamond dogs, as far as I'm aware. Assuming whatever plan he had works, or worked, then he should be returning soon."

Jane simply sat and glared at Wit, her gaze extending over the cup of coffee that she began sipping on. She noted that the coffee was fortunately not nearly as bitter as Wit. Once Wit was done speaking she set the coffee cup down, only mildly disheartened that Solaris wasn't around. "Well I suppose I'll leave you with my report. Surely you've heard of the recent commotion in the major cities of Equestria. The list of targets that Alpha charged me with and later reported to you, has been handled. Never without a backup plan I have provided my handler with methods of clearing the names of the good ponies I've slandered. But a very recent development might interest Sir Strike and yourself especially. Shortfuse is working with Alpha. Or I should say, will be very soon." she explained.

"Shortfuse? Interesting. It doesn't fall in line with his profile. He still serves Equestria, though the nobility more than the country. Perhaps his irrational hatred for Solaris is more extreme than I had thought. Even if you told him otherwise, Protocol's goal is Equestria's downfall, or so I had thought. Shortfuse doesn't strike me as the pony to take anypony at face value."

Wit put a hoof to his chin, looking over the papers. They wouldn't help him, but it was his habit to absorb information while he was thinking of something else.

"This doesn't bode well. I hadn't accounted for this. Shortfuse bears more investigation, if that is the case... I trust your handler has the business with the officials well in hoof, though I do hope he intends to wait awhile. "
