Alpha sat patiently in the office of his newest partner in crime, Shortfuse. Or should it be 'General of the army' Shortfuse? He'd done well to secure the military as soon as possible. And manipulating the disappearance of Princess Twilight was another accomplishment to be noted. As a matter of fact, things were moving smoother than he could have hoped for. So far anyway.

It wasn't hard to convince a passing member of the castle staff that Shortfuse's "advisor" wanted to speak with him as soon as possible, sending them off to fetch the conspirator. For now he passed the time reading the daily paper while he waited.

Shortfuse entered his office and stopped once he noticed Alpha, giving the red pegasus a cocked eyebrow before resuming his trot over to his desk.

"Rather bold of you. Why are you here?" He asked, reaching under his desk to pull up two glasses followed by a bottle of whiskey.

"Am I not operating to your liking?" He asked again, pouring the whiskey into both glasses.

Alpha set down his paper when Shortfuse walked in. "Why does no one say 'hello' anymore?" He asked nobody. "I'm actually here to give you my congratulations. You're pulling this off without a hitch." He took the furthest glass from himself and gave the whiskey a sip.

"I'd say you were actually enjoying yourself."

Shortfuse sighed in response, taking the glass to his lips and drinking a fair bit.

"Its not quite that simple. There is a 'hitch.' A rather large one." He said as he pulled up a file from his desk and slid it over to Alpha.

"Yes, I've seized control of the army and even managed to distract King Vito for the time being. However, Princess Twilight is not missing because of me. Agents sent to deal with her were intercepted by a unicorn in black armor. Theres a sketch the survivors supplied inside." He said looking at Alpha, eyes narrowed.

"In short, A missing Princess that knows a coup just transpired within her Government."

Alpha paused, then downed the whole of his glass' contents. "That is quite the hitch..." He siad. "And now I'm less pleased hearing about it than I was before."

"The last thing we need is someone who knows about all this getting the word out." And here things were going smoothly. Alpha was mentally kicking himself for not micro managing Shortfuse's operations.

Shortfuse downed the rest of his drink before flipping some pages in the file and pointing at different documents.

"Heres what I know. This black armored unicorn operates far too professionally to be a mercenary. They operate in a fashion I've never seen, they know the castle's patrols, guard positioning, my agent's dead drops. They know the castle servant's schedule. They're like a ghost: fading in to disrupt my operations and then disappearing before anything can be done about it. " Shortfuse said all this with a rising anger in his voice.

"I've halted my agent's operations indefinitely and I've enacted martial law so that I have far more eyes and ears about. See, you have a trail, albeit its subtle. This unicorn? There is absolutely nothing to follow."

"Nothing?" Alpha asked. There had to be something to follow. Some kind of pattern. "Alright, aside from this new thorn in our side, what else should I know? And what does King Vito want?"

"King Vito arrived shortly after Princess Twilight went 'missing.' He was offering help in keeping order or finding the Princess, whatever needs doing. His son, Coeur, is also investigating things. Hes heading up to Canterlot, should be arriving soon." Shortfuse explained shrugging.

"The rumor is you're not a fan of Coeur. Why is that?"

Alpha waved the question off. "If I told you, you wouldn't believe it." Not that it mattered what Shortfuse belied about it anyway. "If he's coming, I'll have to slink off soon. The Greystone's are more trouble than they're worth. The quicker they get back home to Whinns the better."

"Oh, and speaking of that. While you're on the search for your 'kidnapper', you should close the borders and start deporting foreiners. That includes diplomats that have no business investigating Equestrian matters." Alpha was hinting heavily at the Greystones. He didn't he the prince revealing his identity to someone who didn't need to know. He could very well ruin everything.

Shortfuse shook his head "Let me tell you why thats a stupid idea." He started, taking a breath.

"Since Equestria began its had an open border policy when it comes to immigrants. In fact, a good portion of the population have been living, working and breeding here for generations. If we start deporting foreigners we can make no exceptions... This means uprooting families who've lived here for hundreds of years. We'll have a rebellion on our hands instantly. You have to remember that the military will most likely take the citizen's side if we start deporting foreigners." He explained, sitting in his chair.

"In short: No."

Alpha thought. "Alright, point made. But the Greystones still need to go. I don't care how. They're a high security risk and shouldn't be allowed to snoop around." Frankly, Alpha was getting tired of Couer and wished he could find the best way to kill him.

Shortfuse nodded "I can't see how... Vito cannot be moved. His stay is only temporary however. Coeur I'm not so sure. You're partly as assassin though right? Why can't you kill him?" Shortfuse asked eyebrow raised.

"Its not like he can sense your very presence." Shortfuse said, a bit of a laugh cutting in at the thought.

Alpha cleared his throat. "Couer is about as attentive as Solaris was." He said. "I'm not as skilled an assassin as my associate Bella anyway. In any case, I'm glad I came by. This has been enlightening."
