Spirit, sitting down in the comfortable train-seat was, as he gazed outside at the passing countryside, quite uneasy at what he was about to do. Canterlot was once a forbidden destination for him in his many travels throughout Equestria, due to a falling-out with his parents, who swore to throw him in jail upon ever seeing his face again. To be frank and short, Spirit believed them. Two powerful nobles who possessed connections within the Royal Guard, the Military, and the Court system, and also held immense amounts of money in their vaults. Messing with his parents was the wrong idea, and that's exactly what he planned on doing, for better or worse.
Although honestly, it would probably be 'worse'.
-Three Days Ago-
Spirit was left standing in the snow for quite a while after Cynder told him to "Figure yourself out". The statement sunk in deep, and Spirit was left contemplating just what she wanted. Yet, that only led him to the conclusion that he didn't know what he himself wanted. His goals were a mess, and his life was too. Wandering around Equestria to learn as many skills as he could helped Spirit in the sense that he was choke-full of helpful knowledge, but it left him lonely and without a clear-cut goal of what he was doing. That wasn't something he could stand for much longer. Spirit wanted to fins himself a goal, something, or somepony, that he could dedicate his life to and free him of his misdirection and maybe even his little loneliness. That pony, he believed, was Cynder Ardor.
Ever since he had met her, things had been different. Sure he had worked in the Rangers, and that was, in effect, the only real direction in his life, but that was a nonfactual when it came to her. She was adventurous, crazy, and downright lovable, and while Spirit wasn't one to judge based on a pony's looks, she was pretty much eye-candy to him. Regardless of that, his life had a sense of direction besides the Ranger's that Spirit absolutely loved. He craved it with all his being, and as much as he didn't want to admit it, he needed that silly earth pony.
Although... one thing still bugged him. One portion of his mind would not rest with this kind of inner discovery, his past. You see, Spirit grew up within the walls of the Gemstone noble family, a family with a strong hoof in the gem-mining industry, as well as military research for the equestrian military. Being the experts in gem and gem-related substances, as well as how they conduct and react with certain kinds of magic, is apparently incredibly valuable information to posses. Spirit's own father was a Major within the military and his mother was a researcher with R&D. Now, that all in mind, note that his colt-hood was nothign less than mind-molding. His parents wanted to create, in essence, the perfect gentle-colt. While on the surface this seems like a good idea, it came at the cost of his personality and happiness. Up until flight school, when Spirit had no friends, he was inwardly miserable and din't even know it. It took the gargantuan efforts of his friends and instructors to instill even a shred of personality into what everypony saw as a robot. However, sparks start fires, and fires start infernos. The spark of personality within Spirit let to a conflagration with his family that led to his own disowning by his parents. It did not end well.
Spirit had quite suddenly decided that the issue of his parents and how they treated him was to be completely and utterly thrown out the window as a problem, and in order for him to do that he needed to confront them. He couldn't live with himself, especially not anypony else, if their argument was not resolved... and it was a fact that Spirit had come to realize over his life.
He crept into the room that night, well past midnight when he was sure she was asleep, a note in his hooves, and laid it gently down on her nightstand, right next to her cutlass. He hoped she would discover it, and maybe even forgive him for what he was about to do. Spirit amounted his own actions to actually killing his own life, as the risk of his parents finding some way to arrest him was incredibly high. They always were stubborn, he mused as he tiptoed to the door, taking once last glance at Cynder.
"... sleep tightly, Cyndy." he whispered as he gently closed the door, being extra careful not to wake her up. The next hour would find Spirit leaving the town, the remainder of the bits he earned as a Ranger being spent on some food and train tickets. The next day would find him on a train, speeding along towards Canterlot, his final doom.
--Note--
Dear Cynder Ardor,
I think I've figured myself out, and that I also like you in return, very much. There's just one more thing I have to do in Canterlot with my family before I can be in a relationship. I need to confront my parents, who by the way are incredibly influential nobles with tons of money and will probably see to it that I'm forced into the military. Once that's done, I think we can move on.
Sincerely, Apache 'Spirit' Emerald
P.S. Please don't follow me. They have a certain issue against pegasi and unicorns.
--- Present ---
Spirit stepped off the train, staring at the city before him. Canterlot, capitol of the Equestrian Empire, and also his home city. He knew these streets by the back of his hoof, almost every nook and cranny within the city. Getting to his home would be easy, but getting inside would prove incredibly difficult. The pegasus shook his head, concentrating on the simple task at hoof, getting there.
"Focus.... focus..." he told himself under his breath, nervous. Spirit was so jittery that he even bought a small apple with two bits he found on the train, and ended up eating it on the go. Spirit's own fear of his parents was tangible, and even ponies who walked by him could see the fear that was almost literally taking over his body. Little did Spirit know that somepony had already seen him, and had... reported to his parents of Apache Emerald's arrival.

Cynder was on the first train back to Canterlot as soon as she found Spirit's note. He might not have wanted her there, but she'd be damned if she didn't go and support him anyway. She arrived in Canterlot and immediately went to her father to see if he recognized Spirit's full name. Luckily, or unluckily as it turned out, he was part of the Gemstone family, an influential house who basically ran the gemstone trade in Canterlot. Acoording to her father, they were the type of ponies who took their nobility way too seriously. I'm talking WAY too seriously. For example, the kind of overseriousness that would drive a pony to disown their own son.
But at least now she knew Spirit was going and, after a quick shower and a change into something a bit more presentable than armor, she was off. She actually put a pin in her mane to keep it out of her face for once, and managed to put on a nice button down shirt, with black, gray and red striped plaid on top of white. Luckily it was actually a tolerable temperature in Canterlot.
She rushed over towards the Gemstone manor as quickly as her hooves would carry her, and as luck would have it, she spotted a very familiar green figure heading in that same direction.
"Spirit!" She called after him, hoping he would stop.

"..." was his only reaction when he heard that voice. He didn't even need to glance back to tell that it was Cynder's. Spirit would have flown, but flying in Canterlot was almost nonexistent, and he feared that his identity would be discovered with little issue if he took to the air. Thus, he sped up just a bit, taking a longer, windier route to his home.

"Spiiiiriiiit!" Cynder called after him, still sprinting towards him. "It's pointless to run from me! I already know where you're going!" She shouted. "Just wait up a second!" She was slowly catching up to Spirit, but these winding paths were making it difficult.

Spirit finally stopped in an alleyway, a back-alley that he thought no-pony would find him in. He quickly hid behind a crate and waited for Cynder to come into the alleyway before coming up behind her at the entrance, facing her flank now.
"... So you read my note, and yet you came anyways."

Cynder entered the alley and turned when she heard Spirit's voice. "Of course I did!" She said. "We're partners, remember? I'm not just going to let you do something like this without me to back you up. This is like, super important. And if they're as bad as everyone keeps saying they are, then you're going to need my help."

"Well this time it's not up to you!" he shot back, a bit angry, even taking an aggressive step towards her. "Just by being here you're delaying me the precious minutes that I could have been using to get into my parent's house. I don't care what you're trying to do Cynder, because no matter who you are they're going to seriously hurt you if you're found with me!" he tried to reason with her, maybe even get her to run. If he could do that, then maybe he could go into this fight with a clear head. Little did Spirit know that he was already being hunted.

"And what are you going to do to stop me? Hm?" The correct answer was not a damn thing. Cynder was going to go with Spirit no matter what he did. "Sounds like we're wasting time then." She said slyly, walking past him and back to the entrance of the alley.
"They live this way, right?" She asked, pointing in a direction. She had gotten the address from her father just in case she didn't find Spirit in time.

Spirit held out a wing in front of her to stop her, glaring into her eyes with what seemed like fear. "... I'm only going to ask you, plead once... to let me finish this with myself."

Cynder angrily grabbed Spirit's wing and started pulling him along with her. "Denied." She said as she started walking along. "You already know that I'm more than capable to handling myself. So stop worrying about me this once and let me help you for a change." She gave him a look of determination, a fire in her soul burning with a true passion she had not felt before. She was going to do this with Spirit whether he wanted her to or not, because she knew deep in her heart that she had to.

Spirit said nothing at first, instead being dragged by her. "... you misunderstood. I know you're strong enough to handle this." he told her, and then suddenly spun around, freeing his wing and slightly pushing her in the direction she was going before jumping back, flapping his wings once to propel himself about a dozen yards back.
"I'm doing this because I need to finish this! Not you, not my father, not my mother, but ME-..."
"There he is!" somepony called out from the alleyway. A glance would reveal a squad of Royal Guards, who now suddenly rushed and surrounded Spirit.
"Apache Emerald, you are hereby under arrest for dodging your conscription into the royal guard."

Cynder was about to retort about how Spirit was just wasting time standing around arguing with her about it and was going to threaten to go to his parents by herself, when suddenly they were surrounded by a group of guards suddenly. "Wh-Wha..?" She looked at the guards and realized something didn't add up.
"Wait just a second!" She said. "We're members of the Equestrian Rangers! Neither of us would have gotten drafted!"

"Yeah!" Spirit added on. "We're immune to the any laws that might prevent us from doing our job so long as we act in accordance with the protection of Equestria, which is our purpose." Spirit told them. Some of the guards seemed confused, as Spirit and Cynder were technically right. One of stepped forward, a seemingly more important pony than the rest.
"You two are absolutely right. However, we're just going to take you to Headquarters to verify this and take you off the 'dodger's' list." The gargantuan told Spirit, who nodded.
"Yes, please. Let's just clear my name so there won't be any further trouble." he told the guard, motioning for Cynder to follow him as well.

Cynder obeyed and followed along with Spirit and the large guard. She got closer to Spirit so that he would hear her when she spoke under her breath. "You don't know how much you actually need me, do you?" She asked aggressively.

"Probably not." Spirit mused, probably even teasing back just a bit. "Perhaps... this is all just an illusion, and that we're both actually pineapples resting on a beach. Or Perhaps would you like to explain why you're saying such things?" Spirit asked her calmly as they walked towards the guard headquarters.
