An ancient race of ponies who worshipped the moon and stars, and were more gifted in magical arts than any other race.
PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION

Moonicorns are taller and much thinner than unicorns, their horns longer and sharper. The tallest rival Saddle Arabians and even Alicorns in height, though they lack the muscle mass of either race. Though their manes and coats come in a variety of styles and colors, a Moonicorn's eyes are notably different. The entire eye (pupil, iris, even sclera) is one solid color, and glows with a soft bioluminescence. When channeling powerful magic, their eyes glow brighter and turn white, regardless of the original color. Moonicorns never develop cutie marks.
The Moonicorns were strongly gifted in the arcane arts, and very resistant to diseases. However, they were physically weaker, and more susceptible to temperature and fatigue. Moonicorns reach adulthood around age 25, and can live for up to 200 years. They often became powerful magic users due to both their magical affinity and the decades they could devote to their studies.
HISTORY
Long ago, in the Paleo-Pony Period, there was life. A race of ponies, not so different from the unicorns of today, thrived in a Northern land. The land was called Primus, the ponies known as Primes. It was believed that they were the first to use magic, though most today believe that distinction belongs to the Alicorns. The Primes believed they gained their magic as a blessing from the stars, and the celestial beings that inhabited them.
The Primes spread across Primus, where they encountered the Eohippus, the precursors to the Earth ponies, who worshipped the sun. The Eohippus called them "unicorns", meaning "one horn". Some Primes integrated freely into Eohippus society, living with them and even breeding with them. From these unions came the first unicorns and Earth ponies. The Primes who refused to mingle began calling themselves "Moonicorns" to differentiate themselves from the unicorns. The two races eventually formed a caste system, with unicorns as the lower class, and Moonicorns as the ruling upper class.
Moonicorns considered themselves to be the most civilized culture; the common tongue of the continent was based on their speech and writing, and most of Primus' arts, crafts, laws, and sciences were derived from Moonicorn traditions.
Eventually, the Moonicorns became aware of an approaching threat: the frost dragon Cryotek. Try as they may to defeat or drive back the beast, Cryotek would always return. His scales reflected their magic, and the cold ravaged the Moonicorns' bodies. While unicorns and Earth ponies fled south to escape the cold, the Moonicorns refused to give in to the dragon. And so, they prepared a massive ritual, and the moon that gave them their magic would now serve as a prison for their deadly foe. The Moonicorns tapped directly into a ley line to fuel a mighty ritual, sending Cryotek to the moon, where he couldn't do any more harm. In order to contain the dragon and ensure the ritual's success, they sealed themselves inside the moon as well. The strength of that ritual, combining a Genesis spell with a massive teleport, was so powerful, it cast long-lasting ripples into the very ley lines of the planet. Cryotek himself perished on the moon, for not even a dragon can survive for thousands of years.
PRESENT DAY
Even with their long lifespans, none of the original Moonicorns survived to the present day. History makes few references to their existence, and the world went on without them. However, a cosmic event allowed for travel between Equestria and the Moon for one night only, resulting in the return of Nightmare Moon. It also allowed the descendants of the original Moonicorns to return, though their homeland of Primus was now known as the Frozen North. They could not stay, but were unable to conjure enough Lunar magic to return to the moon. They were trapped in Equestria.
The Moonicorns traveled southwest, until they reached Vanhoover. They kept going until they reached the ocean, and pooled their magic to create a new island miles offshore. The island was named Summersun Isle, and the town of Lunaria was built at it's center. The Moonicorns live there now, making the best of their exile from the moon.
Moonicorn society is based on a class system, with groups known as "clusters". They are led by The Wise, teachers and priests who gather and distribute knowledge and power. The upper class citizens are the Artists, ponies who create beauty and enrich lives. Middle class are the Warriors, those with a talent for destruction, who defend their homes and families. The necessary but unappealing lower class are the Workers, Moonicorns whose magic is only suited for labor.
