A thing to remember with cast iron is not to let it set in water, for too long, or it will rust. If it does rust, its not a big deal. You will need to take real fine wet/dry sand paper or steel wool and scrub it smooth again, rinse it well with water, dry it well and then take some vegetable oil on a paper towel and rub it in to all the surfaces and put it in the oven at 150-250 degrees for several hours (overnight is great). Take it out while its still warm and oil it again. Wipe out the excess and then its good to go. If you get into the habit of rinsing and wiping it out and then rubbing it with veggie oil after each use, food won't stick and its easy to maintain. DO NOT put cast iron through the dishwasher. If something does stick to it, pour water into it and let it set on simmer on top the stove for a few minutes and then scrub it out. |

Glad to help. I have one cast iron skillet and like you, I've buried it somewhere and thought I should get it out some and use it. Now that I can't use my nonstick teflon because of Georgie. I didn't know you are suppose to put it in the oven a while. Totally threw me off.....lol. |

I love my little Cast Iron, I prefer it more to the newbies I have (the nonstick bunch). Call me old fashioned, but it's my favorite. Good to know how to take care of it. |

Yeah, Georgie is the bird. According to what I've read, the non stick stuff causes toxic fumes after getting up to 500 degrees. I guess it's fatal for the feather creatures of the world. That's why I have her out in the living room by the hall instead of the kitchen where she was at before. I sure don't want to lose her now, she's a trip. |

My mom has a canary and my sister has parakeets and they're fine. Maybe its just parrots or something. I've never heard of it. |

Me neither. Luci and I had a parrot when we were kids and mom I believed cooked with nonstick, sprayed air fresheners and all the "no no's" they're claiming. Disco never died. So I don't know. She's not in the kitchen anymore and I don't directly spray airfreshener in the living room. I've even done away with candles in my living room. -Stinks because I'm a candle freak. It hasn't stopped me from using them in other parts of the house though.

I'd check with a vet just to be sure. Non-stick has come soooo far in recent years. |
