Hi, finding this forum is exercising the old brain cells for a concise introduction relating to service history etc, but it started in 1959 when as a 15 year old I joined the Liverpool City Police cadets, collar number 35, amongst those with me, Ricky Leyland, deceased, Lou Lowry, Hugh Pearson, George Dafnis, and about thirty others all 12 months older than myself. I lasted till 1962 and later joined Lancashire in 1965 working in Barrowford, Penwortham and lastly at Maghull as a Motorcyclist. Played for a very strong Lancashire Police Rugby team which won the PAA title in '68. In those days it was a regional team and Lancashire made up 14 of the 15 players, with the 15th being a Cheshire Bobby. (no bench load of subs in those days) Made it to the English and British Police team at round that time. Departed the Lancs set up after a row when I grew a beard in '70. 1971 contacted Liverpool and Bootle and rejoined making contact with John Edwards who was then Supt at the school involved in recruiting, he had been the Drill Sergeant etc back in '59 as many ex cadets can testify. Posted to Eaton Road as Con 80G before promotion to Sgt 42C at Lark Lane in '73. Back with police rugby took over as captain from Peter Dunne about this time when we fielded one team playing on a glass strewn pitch at the transport ground Pilch Lane. Several years later and after much effort we ran four teams playing Saturday rugby, only the Met and South Wales did that, and we had our own ground at Riversdale, and ran an annual Merseyside Police sevens tournament, and got to the finals of the PAA three times, plus regular very popular !!! training sessions. While with the county I managed to pass the Insp exam, so when in '74 they introduced Divisional training officers as the only passed man in the division I took on the role at Garston using the miniscule old office of the Inspectors', that job also involved us in promotion study classes at Mather Ave when C div Teamed up with F div, bringing me into contact with Vic Williams. A few years later moved onto the Cadet staff with Maurice Morrrell, Dave Oakes and Rod Walker, with Hyde Price as the Inspector. The cadet role enabled me to attend a PTI course for 8 weeks down in Folkstone, and I was then able to make full use of the gym equipment at Mather Ave, much to the dismay of many of the female cadets!! I was secretary of the mountaineering club by now and we organised some very exciting winter climbing trips to scotland and put the cadets through their paces in various quarries throughout Lancs. Not to mention the Snowdonia Seven Mounain Marathons and the Karrimore Internationals. All good things come to an end and I was posted out to St Helens in '78 and promoted from there in '80 to Huyton taking over from Joe Symons when he went down to Ken Oxford's office. Divisional boundary changes saw me covering Eaton Road again where many pleasant moments were spent with Peter Vaux as my Sergeant and the likes of Cliff Morrisey accompanying me on Miner strike deployments. Somehow ended up at Wavertree Road before a posting to the OSD, circuit training at Headquarters, Three Peaks Yacht Racing in Tasmania etc proved too much for some and I was posted out to Walton Lane and Kirkby where I ended my days. |
