![]() As powerful as a volcanic eruption, that's how I'd describe the true potential of magmortars power. But this beast can shoot more than just lava. Type: Fire Abilities: Magma armor/flame body Magma armor: Prevents the pokemon getting frozen Flame body: if foe touches magmortar they have a 30% of getting burned [LIFE ORB] Magmortar @ Life orb Nature: mild [-def +sp atk] Ability: Flame body Ev Spread: 252sp atk/172speed/84atk ~Lava plume/overheat ~HP ice/HP grass/psychic ~Thunder bolt ~Cross chop This set runs the same purpose as the smogon set, except the options are different. With life orb + STAB and a whopping 383 sp attack, an overheat from a magmortar will destroy almost anything that comes in. It will even put a massive dint in the common special walls that come in to soak it up in the hope that you switch next turn. After an overheat, don't switch if you hit a bliss, snorlax or another special wall, just cross chop them to their doom (unless they're a ghost or really bulky water type). you could also go lava plume for the 30% burn chance, which is decent if a dragon or a T tar decides to come in on you Your second move should be chosen according to what you are weak to. If you fear the mences, go HP ice. mind you, HP ice can only hit them if you predict the switch. if you try to attack them straight away, then chances are you will cop an earthquake. If you are weak to swamperts, go HP grass. Swamperts wall most magmortars. If you are weak to the likes of machamps, go psychic. Psychic will OHKO the less bulky versions and will 1/2HKO other variations. Your third and fourth moe should stay as they are for the awesome coverage factor. Water types get demolished by T bolt, as do your flying friends. Cross chop is guaranteed a 2HKO on bliss, snorlax and many other special walls you see in OU. Suicune can't revenge kill magmortar if they are the standard bold CM set because it takes them 2 hits to kill magmortar with surf, and magmortar strikes first, 2HKOing the suicune. Suicune can revenge kill if magmortar has taken significant LO damage though. Adjust your EV spread according to the HP you use. 172 speed EVs let you reach 244 speed to outspeed jolly tyranitars, max speed abomasnows and adamant breloom. This is off 30 speed IV, needed if you want HP ice. if you want 31 speed, take off the extra 4 EV and put it on attack. [GIMMICK LEAD] Magmortar @ focus sash Nature: Lonely Ability: flame body EV spread: 168atk/168speed/174sp atk ~Protect ~Earthquake ~Overheat ~Taunt/will O wisp/cross chop A gimmick lead I created. I have yet to trial it so I don't have good results yet. Anyways, the EV spread allows both your attack and sp attack to be reasonably high. this lets you 2HKO bronzong leads with either earthquake for the heat proof versions, or overheat for the levitating versions. overheat will still 2HKO with the status drop. Protect is used to scout a move and to stop fake out leads from knocking off your sash. the last move is tricky but here is what each option can do to help you. Taunt stops the slower leads from setting up or using status moves on you. Handy for hypnozongs or dual screen zongs. Even if they earthquake you next turn, your sash saves you anyway and allows you to 2HKO them regardless of what move you use. always overheat first just in case earthquake is futile. Will O wisp burns foes on the switch. handy for tyranitars, mences and gyarados who think they can freely switch in on you. Or if you hate bliss, run cross chop for a 2HKO. also good for tyranitars who are outsped by magmortar and OHKOed with cross chop. [SUB DRUMMER] Magmortar @ salac berry Nature: Adamant [-sp atk + atk]: Jolly [-sp atk + speed] EV spread: 252attack/252speed/6sp def [20 HP IV] ~Substitute ~Belly drum ~Earthquake ~Fire punch/flare blitz Works the same way as a bellyzard, only this beast has more attack power, but less speed. Both attack and speed are maxed to make the most of the 2 stats used in this set. the speed EVs allow you to outspeed many common threats once the salac berry is activated. magmortars speed reaches over 400 if you choose to run the adamant set, which is just short of the scarfed heracross. If you run jolly, the salac activation will let you outspeed the scarfed heracross, but any scarfed poke with over 291 speed will still be able to outspeed you. the first 3 moves are straightforward, its the fourth move you may want to consider carefully. If you wish to last, go with fire punch. fire punch will OHKO several pokes that take neutral damage and 2HKO most water types that are special based. Flare blitz on the other hand will cause major damage to anything that doesn't have the flash fire ability. However, magmortar will die straight away because flare blitz always does enough damage to kill magmortar with recoil. If anything with flash fire comes in, earthquake will kill them anyway, thanks to the speed boost. HP IV sits at 20 to make your HP divisible by 4, allowing you to only need 1 sub for berry activation. CHOICE BAND Magmortar @ choice band Nature: Lonely [-def + atk] EV spread: 252attack/168speed/88sp atk ~Earthquake ~cross chop ~Fire punch/Flare blitz ~Thunder bolt/HP grass A pretty standard set. Fire, fighting, ground and electric provide pretty good coverage in the OU metagame, the rest falls onto your prediction skills. Earthquake takes out the common fire and rock threats that may happen to come in on you. Cross chop hits T tars on the switch and can OHKO bliss. your third move depends on whether you want to last longer, or deliver a massive amount of damage to an incoming poke. Often, flare blitz is better because you may have rocks on your side of the field already and switching out will hurt magmortar a lot. Delivering massive damage before magmortar falls is probably the best option. your last move should be any special attack you may need. Thunder bolt is the better one so you can hit incoming waters and OHKO gyarados. HP grass sits there if you fear swamperts more. [SPECS] Magmortar @ choice specs Nature: modest [-atk + sp atk] EV spread: 252sp atk/252speed/6sp def ~Overheat/fire blast ~focus blast ~HP ice/HP grass ~Thunder bolt A smogon set that is worth a mention. It is possibly one of magmortars best sets as it provides awesome coverage and can do massive damage with good prediction. for your first option, its your choice of a really powerful STAB move. Overheat grants you + 30 power with STAB included and an extra 5 accuracy at the cost of a sp attack drop after use. Fire blast cuts back your power and you lose 5 accuracy, but it is a better move for late game sweeping. Overheat is recommended because you will be switching frequently earier in the game. Focus blast puts a huge dint in blisseys, doing over 1/3 damage to them. but the 70 accuracy is a bit of a worry since hax can turn a game around. It can OHKO T tars and many other dark, ice, steel, normal and rock threats. Again, the third slot is your choice of HP ice, HP grass or psychic. HP ice if you fear mence, gliscor and other dragon types or HP grass if you fear swamperts. Pyschic isn't listed here because its only good on the more versatile sets of magmortar. Once again, you have T bolt for the water types that get in your way. Other options: You could swap specs for a scarf on the specsmortar. a low base speed of 83 makes choice scarf a useful item for magmortar when it comes to outspeeding a threat you want to revenge kill. Lava plume is a great choice for STAB in all sets other than the sub drummer due to the 30% burn rate. The burn is handy for any physical sweepers who want to switch in on you. Opinion: No other poke in BL has coverage this good in my opinion. The only drawbacks on magmortar are its low speed and stealth rock weakness. stealth rock weakness makes magmortar die too fast in the OU metagame. As goos as the LO set is, it is frail and dies quickly. Ev Spread recommendations: With the neutral natures, 31IV speed and 168 speed EVs are recommended to outspeed all tyranitars other than the scarfed versions. It is also best to invest in either attack or sp attack according to the set you run. Since magmortars cover a lot of types, you want to be able to hit all opponents harder. Even with no sp def EV, magmortar can survive 3 modest gengar shadow balls. Counters: Cresselia, blissey and snorlax can wall most magmortar sets with ease. the latter two have no trouble against the specs set but against the cross choppers, they have a little bit of trouble, especially if the magmortar user senses them coming. All three have trouble with the Sub drummer, but because of stealth rock, the sub drummer is rarely used. |
