I could, but then I'd jump on a plane and doubly cancel out anything I tried to achieve. The only way we can change these patterns is through mass effect, i.e. Governments and industry.

So when Al Gore says he leads a carbon neutral life is this a lie or does he plant and entire forest of trees to make up for his mass plane flights.

In my humble and cynical opinion, I would say that 'carbon free' lifestyles for the few who partake in them are relatively futile. Like I said, mass effect.

Even those who have the immense funding to support them?

If by that you mean 'people who can support other people taking part in such lifestyles' then that is exactly what I mean.

Reword the question.

Reword the question.

For example are Al Gore's carbon-neutral efforts futile?

Mostly yes. But what he is doing is actually attempting (and in some forms succeeding) in causing mass change. The fact that he is flying from country to country doesnt help things, but he does make up for it through the fly-plant scheme (fly and get some greenies to plant a shiteload of trees to make up for emissions).

My point was, individual efforts are largely useless. "MASS EFFECT" Thats THE only way anything will change for the better.

FROM THE AGE.com - DECEMBER 10th
===================================================
Prime Minister John Howard has announced a taskforce to inquire into Australia's possible involvement in an emissions trading scheme.

He said the world needed to find practical solutions to climate change.

The taskforce of bureaucrats and resource industry figures, chaired by Mr Howard's department secretary Peter Shergold, will investigate how Australia might be involved in an emissions trading system that involved other major nations.

The move comes as the Government attempts to seize the initiative on the climate change debate, after being stung by polls showing most voters are dissatisfied with its response to global warming.

Just months ago the Government was refusing to back carbon trading, saying it could lead to higher prices for petrol and electricity.

Mr Howard said today the taskforce would be charged with investigating how an emissions trading system might affect Australia, and what steps the country would need to take to join such a global scheme.

He said he did not want Australia to squander its natural advantages of cheap coal and plentiful uranium in the zeal to embrace new technologies.

He also stressed the Government would not sign any agreement that harmed Australia's economy or advantaged its economic competitors.

"We need to maintain the prosperity that our abundant fossil fuels have given us, while at the same time exploring options for global climate change solutions and accelerating the development and deployment of low-emissions and clean-coal technologies," he said in a statement.

The 12-member taskforce includes Qantas chairwoman Margaret Jackson, BHP Billiton executive director Chris Lynch, Xstrata executive committee member Peter Coates, National Australia Bank managing director John Stewart, Australian Pipeline Trust director Russell Higgins, International Power managing director Tony Concannon and Alumina Limited CEO John Marlay.

It also comprises the secretaries of the departments of Environment and Heritage, Treasury, Foreign Affairs and Trade, and Industry, Tourism and Resources.

Greens leader Bob Brown today condemned the inquiry as a sop to the coal industry.

He said Mr Howard's taskforce avoided the "logical first step" of setting up a domestic carbon trading system and placing a carbon tax on polluters to fund solar power.

"The inquiry is stacked with miners, who he says are Australia's natural advantage," Senator Brown said.

"The Prime Minister is Australia's natural disadvantage.

"He has made a choice between the coal industry and his grandchildren. He has chosen coal."

Emissions trading allows companies to trade greenhouse gases for money.

The prime ministerial taskforce, which follows the Switkowski report into nuclear energy, is due to report to the Government by May 31 next year.

I love that Howard has decided to set up yet another 'taskforce'. How many taskforces do we have now? Is anyone keeping an eye on these ruffians?

Anyway:

Easily the best thing that has come out of his mouth.

Interesting, very interesting. You're right about the "taskforce" bollocks. Johnny loves buzzwords like he loves Peter Costello's day-long rimjobs.

And Exxon just makes me sick to my core.
