Casino Royale; A truly Royale Bond film

Citizen B
I just saw it today, and just wrote this sketchy review for it.

Casino Royale is nothing other than amazing. The action sequences were ingeniusly planned, well executed, and kept me on the edge of my seat. I think only Goldfinger and Thunderball top this Bond. The complex storyline exhibits many characters and is extremely well performed. The movie does seem to drag on towards the end, as it is the longest movie in the series, but the ending line was comforting and relieved my end-the-movie-already stress.

Daniel Craig definitely lives up to the legendary character of James Bond. He has the charm, wit, and cunning of both Sean Connery and Pierce Brosnan, and the razor-edged sharpness of Timothy Dalton. Most of the rest of the acting was great and convincing. There were many humorous and memorable lines/sequences, such as the Richard Branson Cameo and "Shaken or Stirred?", "Does it look like I give a damn?" line. The incidental music, by David Arnold, is well-composed and synchronized with the visuals of the film. I'd be more than happy to have the opening credits theme, "You know my name", stuck in my head any day.

However, there are still three major flaws I couldn't help but shake my head at. The first is how Daniel Craig's part is written. For a noticable amount of the film he seems more like a cold-blooded killer than the 00 agent he should be. The second is, despite the well-written music, the movie is lacking in music based off the original theme by Monty Norman. This caused me great confusion, because for a little while, while deep into watching it, I forgot this was a James Bond movie. Lastly, the near-end of the movie seems to drag on much, much more than it needs to. As stated above, the ending line did comfort me, but for a first time viewing it was hard to overcome.

Still, this truly is a jewel in the James Bond series. Daniel Craig is a great Bond, and Casino Royale is a great film. It is a unique approach to Bond never done before in the series, but is much better than I first predicted it would be.

And as the closing credits reached the end, after a movie this good, I was more than pleased to once again see the four epic words:

James Bond Will Return

9.5 / 10

I heard it's amazing, but not a true Bond film.

How that works out, I have no idea.

I'm seeing an advance screening next week.

Oh and stormbreaker, if you consider the Pierce Brosnan-esque Bond films as examples of a true Bond film, then you are so very wrong.

It seems like they've gone for 'good action movie' as opposed to 'Bond formula join-the-dots', so I'm very interested.

Plus Daniel Craig is possibly the best Bond since Sean.

The new girl is especially attractive too.

I never liked Pierce Brosnan, but while we're on the subject of Bond - what Brosnan film was your favourite/least hated?

Strangely for me it was Tomorrow Never Dies. Die Another Day was shit, thanks mainly to Halle Fucking Berry.

Goldeneye would be my pick.

and the new girl warrants an 'upside down' to the highest fucking degree.

Goldeneye is not only the best Brosnan film, it's one of the best Bond films overall and is an illustration of what a modern Bond film can be.

I don't think I need to discuss how incredible the N64 game was.

That's a bit rich, coming from the mouth of the guy who got confused when I said "The Widow" involved saving the president's life.

TSC, of course the game Goldeneye is one of my favourite games of all time - but the movie was nothing special.

im assuming the widow is the name of that story.

and i was confused to begin with, having been talking on the phone while reading it on a foreign monitor.. not really paying attention, but reading all the same, and not going back and analyzing it for literary whatever it is you do. i think i had good reason to not understand the story.
