Do any of you like Muse? They're personally, probably my favorite band.

Absolution ftw!
Guess what! I'm writing a book called Nuclear Winter!

Although some of their stuff is quite good, I can't get past the fact that I immensely dislike them. They do nothing for me, in the sense that their music bores me.

Bellamy emulating Yorke FTW!

I find them quite poor, mainly for the tendency to load up every song with crap it doesn't need. Just because there are 128 tracks available doesn't mean you have to use all of them.

I see how it is.

Between Radiohead and Muse, your loyalty lies with Radiohead.

Y'all are haters.

Thanks, I know.

:P I was joking

On a more serious note, I just listened to about twenty songs, and didn't really notice too much "extra crap", as TheSecondComing stated. Perhaps he was actually referring to all of the fancy equipment they use to achieve their sound. I guess he wasn't clear enough. I agree, they "fluff" their music up, but not to the point where it is unbearable or un-entertaining to listen to. But, I digress, as I can see that we clearly differ in opinion here.

As for your previous statement regarding to a certain Matthew Bellamy emulating Thom Yorke's distinct sound, I object. I trust that you derived your deduction comparing Matt's falsetto to Thom's either from either the public stance of comparison of the two or an impotent study of their music. Regardless, I hold firm in my stance that Bellamy's falsetto is a product of his own, and certainly no attempt at emulating Thom's, until I see proof or a statement from Bellamy himself. If you have the aforementioned proof, make it known to me and I will change my views on this matter.

It isn't a matter of 'proof' as such, but a matter of opening your ears and understanding that originality isn't very rich within either Bellamy's style of falsetto and Muse's musical offerings.

I almost choked on my breakfast.] TSC, you'll love this.

This is because you have poor taste. You failed to notice the "extra crap" because you falsely interpreted it as "good music".

I was referring to the blatant over-production Muse employs. Their musical output is so heavily processed and 'studio-ified' that otherwise reasonable passages of sound make me want to regurgitate. Muse aren't the only culprits either, practically every 'rock' band in the last decade or so has been guilty of this at some point. When you have 128 tracks, a pretentious producer, and a record company paying for your equipment, studio time and drugs, it's bound to happen. Plus, most people are tasteless hacks, and they enjoy that kind of music anyway.

In response to the 'Muse copying Radiohead' issue, I will just point out a few things and let you make your own judgements.

Muse's first release, a self-titled EP, came out in March 1998, ten months after Radiohead had released OK Computer to rapturous acclaim and popular success.

According to my old buddy Wiki...

Quote:

Despite the success and acclaim of their second E.P., British record companies were reluctant to back Muse, and many sections of the music industry were concerned that their sound was too similar to that of Radiohead (circa The Bends).

Quote:

John Leckie, who had produced the aforementioned The Bends... was brought in to produce the band's first record, Showbiz.

Quote:

Their second album, Origin of Symmetry, again produced by Leckie...

You decide.

Well, I now assume that by "extra crap" you meant distortion and other such effects. Which I agree, modern music has too much of. But that doesn't make Muse's music unbearable - at least from my stance.

Just because their sound was similar to Radiohead's does not mean that they obtained it from them! Sure, the fact that they had Radiohead's producer brought into the picture is a little suspicious, but that only means that they liked his work with Radiohead and O.k Computer.

I enjoyed debating with you, but I can see that I am losing.

Yes, I too object to the blatant overuse of distortion in modern music. At least you've found a point we agree upon.

And on a non-mocking matter - the song "New Born" from Origin of Symmetry sounds very Mars Volta like. I'm not sure if the rest is the same as I just heard that track on the radio.

Finally, El, pay no attention to my rampant Muse bagging. If you like certain music and it does something for you emotionally or you just enjoy it, who are we to tell you what to like? Enjoy it.

I think the reason we (you, actually) all have been using "extra crap" and distortion as a reason to judge Muse is because of their latest album, which I, quite frankly, don't enjoy as much.

So SecondComing, what about extra crap in their earlier albums? Just wondering if I'm actually understanding you here.

Okay, let me make it clear.

You said...
Quote:

I clarified by saying...
Quote:

I was referring to the blatant over-production Muse employs.

Then, you blatantly ignored my clear explanation, and went on to demonstrate your lack of comprehension by saying...
Quote:

Well, I now assume that by "extra crap" you meant distortion and other such effects.

In response, no, by "extra crap" I did not mean "distortion and other such effects". I meant exactly what I said in response to you, when you first indicated you didn't understand my point - I was referring to the music released by Muse being over-produced. Do you understand that concept?
