Injustice?

For those who are lazy, here is a summary of the article:

In the 'best small town in Texas' Paris, the home of mass lynchings in the 1930s, a young black girl, 14 years old, was sentenced to 7 years of juvenile detention, for 'shoving a 58-year old hall monitor in a dispute over entering the building before the school day had officially begun.'

The youth had no prior arrest record, and the hall monitor--a 58-year-old teacher's aide--was not seriously injured. But Shaquanda was tried in March 2006 in the town's juvenile court, convicted of "assault on a public servant" and sentenced by Lamar County Judge Chuck Superville to prison for up to 7 years, until she turns 21.

The journalist, and many legal officials and civil rights activists in the region, compare this particular sentencing with another interesting decision handed down by Superville, only 3 months earlier, where he sentenced a 14-year-old white girl, convicted of arson for burning down her family's house, to probation.

Yet another example, is that of a 19-year old white man, convicted last July of criminally negligent homicide for killing a 54-year-old black woman and her 3-year-old grandson with his truck, who was sentenced in Paris to probation and required to send an annual Christmas card to the victims' family.

You're welcome to further research the topic, and discuss.

That's ridiculous, 7 years for shoving somebody?
Guess what! I'm writing a book called Nuclear Winter!

That's a pretty stupid thing to say.

Yes. That's all I can really say, because racism in the south will never end until we send the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, etc. down there to enforce racial peace.

I hate to say this, (not really) but lumpunzik is right. There is still a very much racist attitude in the south, although it's a lot better than it used to be.

But I think the point of the article, is that the most disturbing element of this remaining racism, is still finding its way into Federal or at least State level legislation and judiciary power.

A civil war eh? Pity the man with the power to order such a thing would be on the confederate side...

Not necessarily a civil war, because the first one didn't do anything to changes people's attitudes. The only two things that came out of it were abolition and the economic collapse of the south. What I'm saying is that people would have to have their lives controlled by the iron fist of the government and the military before they even look an inch in any direction away from racism.

I've never really known Bush to have any bias about race, but seeing that he's president, if he did have such thoughts, he'd possibly have more publicity over it than Iraq itself.

Surely this would encourage the citizens to rebel rather than to adhere to any such strict rules? Such a system is doomed to fail.

Do you remember the Katrina catastrophe; do you see the current state of the welfare system? If Bush's bias is a reality, it's evident but largely subtle.

You can boil a frog alive in a pot of water if you slowly turn the heat up over time.

Truth. But Bush's other publicity is piling up on top of that.

Thankfully, *waves goodbye to 2008*.

I still can't agree though. I make reference to particularly oppressive legislation in nations that eventually boil over into violence, or at least large scale opposition.
