The reason the president has the "football" is to be able to respond to a nuclear attack with a nuclear attack. If the president attempted to launch a nuclear attack in the event of another 9/11, I would hope the people around him would realize he is no longer in control of his faculties and physically restrain him until the cabinet can declare him unable to perform his duties and give his powers to the V.P. Also, the War Powers Act has nothing to do with this. Like I said, the "football" exists for rapid response to a nuclear attack. If the president wants to launch that scale of attack without incoming missiles, he should use the constitutional avenue of asking Congress, in whom is vested the power to decide to go to war. In regards to Truman: he already had a declaration of war from Congress when he dropped the bombs on Japan. Once Congress has authorized war, it is then basically the president's discretion, within the limits of international law, how to prosecute it. |

Ya but if you think WW3 won't start sometime then your wrong. There will always be another war and it will always be worse or as bad as the one before since technology(military weapons) is advancing so fast. |

The U.S. will never drop a nuclear bomb on the Middle East - what, and risk contaminating all that precious oil that we happily kill for on a daily basis?? My favorite politician at the moment - Senator Barack Obama of Illinois. |

kyyankgirl beat me to it, but allow me to add Sen. Obama to the list. I've met him and been lucky enough to have a few minutes of his time. I hope his ideas are allowed to be heard. He has alot to offer. As for dropping nukes on the Middle East, we're not about to irradiate the black gold we so badly need. WWIII may indeed start some day. May it never involve nukes or we're all going to have blue hair, blonde eyes and webbed feet...for the decade or two we're still able to live in nuclear winter.

[Please do not insult other posters. And please do not re-edit postst that a mod has edited.] How great it is for the government to be spying on us all while they have their own scandals that they won't give us even a tiny bit of information about. |

Russ Feingold and John McCain (probably the only Republican I would ever vote for, and he's hardly a Republican when you look at what he stands for). I'm surprised that there are so many Bush votes here. I'm obviously not. Maybe because I'm young and college educated? ( ) As long as we're talking about weapons, we obviously invaded the wrong country. Iran was the serious threat all along, and now we're too thin to be even considered a threat to them. Do you think that N. Korea, Iran, and other nations try to acquire nuclear weapons to start wars? NO! They've all learned a valuable lesson from the Cold War - "If you don't want the U.S. messing in your business, get nukes." I had a history professor suggest that Donald Rumsfeld should remove his head from his ass before speaking after he openly suggested a "regime change" in N. Korea, since he was apparently unaware that CHINA views them as a very close ally. Nice job, Donny. Let's piss off the Chinese. One out of every 6 people in the world is Chinese, not Asian, Chinese. If there's one country that could put us in our place, it's China. Anywho, not a big supporter of a gunship foreign policy since its, well, never worked in the history of man. |
