And yet, you picked a slave-owner. No one said the "greatest American" had to be flawless - no one would qualify. IMO, it would be FDR - the epitome of true leadership. |

But the Emancipation Proclemation didn't even free the slaves. Wasn't it not until a while later that they got freed? |

The Emancipation Proclamation was issued in September, but did not free the slaves until January 1 the following year. However, because most slaves could not read, many did not find out for YEARS that they were free. Anyway, within a decade, most of the South had passed "Jim Crow" laws that stripped them of all the rights they'd been granted with passage of the 13th, 14th and 15th amendments. FYI: The state of Kentucky did not pass those amendments until 1976. So technically, blacks born in Kentucky were slave until 1976!! |

God, I'm so glad you brought that up. For those of you who don't know, Lincoln wasn't after freeing the slaves. The EP was a threat to the South that if the didn't stop fighting, their slaves would be freed at the start of the new year. He didn't want freed salves, he wanted the war over. If the South would have stoppped fighting, their slaves wouldn't have been freed. Also, the EP didn't free the slaves in the north at the set date, only the southern slaves. Also, if the South didn't stop fighting then, it would make it seem to the rest of the world that the South was mainly fighting to keep slaves. England was very close to joining the South's side, but had recently taken an anti-slavery stance. After the EP, England refused to join the South because they wouldn't support slavery. The Civil War was indeed about states' rights, not slavery. |
