Honestly, there is no greatest American. All heroes have dark sides. If you want to pick who did the most for us, it's Edison.

Also on a side note, his policies may have seemed to help at the time, but they set a standard of socialism that has lasted (and continues to hinder the US economy) for seven decades... But he was an impressive war time president.
