Teacher Debra Lafave Won't Face Student Sex Charges ORLANDO, Fla. -- State prosecutors decided Tuesday to drop charges against a former Tampa teacher accused of having sex with a 14-year-old middle school student. The decision, announced hours after a judge rejected a plea deal for Debra Lafave, means the victim won't have to testify. Prosecutors and defense attorneys had urged the judge to accept the deal for the sake of the boy involved. A psychiatrist who examined the teenager told the judge at a previous hearing that the boy suffered extreme anxiety from the media coverage of the case and does not want to testify. Marion County Circuit Judge Hale Stancil, however, said the lack of prison time for Lafave under the plea deal "shocks the conscience of this court," and he rejected it. Assistant State Attorney Richard Ridgway, in explaining the decision to drop the charges, said: "The court may be willing to risk the well-being of the victims in this case in order to force it to trial. I am not." Lafave, 25, already faces three years of house arrest and seven years probation in Hillsborough County, where she was charged with having sex with the same boy in a classroom and her home. She pleaded guilty Nov. 22 to two counts of lewd and lascivious battery under a plea deal there. In Marion County, she was accused of having sex with the boy in a sport utility vehicle. Lafave said at a news conference later Tuesday that she has bipolar disorder, and her attorney said she was getting treatment. "I have a lot of things in my past that have unfortunately become public," Lafave said. Hillsborough County prosecutor Mike Sinacore has said the victim's family had anticipated a trial, but the media attention prompted the boy's mother to push for a plea deal. "There is no one that wanted to see Debra Lafave serve jail time more than myself," the boy's mother wrote in an e-mail to the Ocala Star-Banner over the weekend. But she said the welfare of her son was more important. http://www.wlky.com/news/8167834/detail.html ********** This really bothers me, because there is no way in hell they would let a man teacher who abused female students off. This perv needs to do jail time. |

Oh my god!! Send that sick woman to jail! Why do guys get locked up and those women dont? For instance there was this one woman who had an affair with one of male students when he was 14 and now 10 years later they got married. They should have done something about that |

This transcends men's or women's rights.....she is a criminal and a perv and has earned jail time. No way they would let a male teacher walk for doing the same thing. And Brewgirl, you're thinking of Mary Kay Letourneau (sp). They only gave her jail time after she repeatedly got in contact with the guy after the court told her not to....and yes, they got married last year after she served 7 or so years. Sick. |

Yeah, its do to the deomocrats, they are pretty much doing it for the feminists (I'm mean the crazy ones) this is just liberalism gone wrong, they don't want this to turn into "hate" against women, this country is getting sad, we got to go back to the old values that made this country great, we can't make everyone happy, it never works. |

Thats funny. I tried to post a reply when Tim moved the topic here, and it told me "that topic is no longer here", and I was thinking, I know it is, I just saw it. Anyway, more seriously, this seriously pisses me off. I'm tired of seing people use crap like bipolar disorder to get out of stuff like this. Someone could commit murder and get off in today's liberal courts because they have ADD, "temporary insanity" (never quite understood how someone could be temporarily insane), or bi-polar disorder. |

This has nothing to do with liberals or conservatives, Democrats or Republicans. This is about how society views sexuality....how young girls are viewed as victims, but young boys are not.....how jokes are made about how "hot" the woman teacher is, but how the men teachers are "pervs". The bottom line is the adults - male or female, hot or not - are criminals. But the predominantly MALE justice system giggles and thinks it's cool that a young boy "scored" with his "hot" teacher. |

In 8th grade, my English teacher was a perv. He didn't do anything but you could tell he was thinking about the girls a little too much. We also had a sub who was weird he was feeling my hair and was like nice haircut. Pretty creepy. And once he had lunch duty and was looking under the table, and also thought my friends oatmeal creme pie was chicken. Yeh in MD we pretty much have no teaching standards, you just have to have a high school degree to be a sub. But my mom is a sub with only a HS degree (plus some college) so I won't complain that much. |
