The Senate didn't pass the ban by 1 vote. Personally I feel it should be illegal. It may be "freedom of speech" but there is no reason for US citizins (or illegals who risked so much to get here) to burn a flag. If someone really hated America enough to burn the flag, they should leave, and feel free to do it out of the US. (BTW this doesn't include burning of old tattered flags, that are burned out of honor and respect.) |

I have mixed emotions on this one. I hate flag-burning and despise any American who would burn one. The fact that the Supreme Court ruled that this action is a form of "speech" has brought about the horrific choice of having to allow anyone to burn an American Flag or having to amend the Constitution. Maybe a law could be passed making the image of an American Flag the copyrighted property of the American people in the custody of the federal government. Then, when someone "buys" a flag, they are really only buying the right to fly it and don't end up owning the actual flag. If they burn it, they are burning someone else's property and can be prosecuted for that! |

I'm not sure how I feel about this. I don't see why any American would want to burn the flag, but the Supreme Court has said flag-burning is protected by the First Amendment. At the same time, where do you draw the line on desecrating the flag? I've seen models in flag bikinis.....I saw a picture of Kid Rock performing wearing a flag like a shirt.....lots of performers wear the flag.....where do you draw the line? |

A law like that was passed. The Supreme Court ruled that burning a flag was "speech" and declared the law unconstitutional, hence the attempt to amend the Constitution. |

If someone wants to burn the flag while trying to make a statement then I think that they should be allowed to do so. |

I don't think a flag burning amendment would succeed, because you'd need 2/3 of the states (37 of them) to pass it, and I can't see that happening. |

the burning of the flag happens to retire the old flags from use. people should donate them to area boyscout troops or something, that way the ceremony can be done properly. But if its a normal individual, or as an act of disrespect, then it should be illegal. |

Burning of the flag is a horrible thing. Anyone who does it sux and can get out of america for all i care. My Father, Grandfathers, and Great Grandfathers have fought for this country and protected it. With that said, they fought to protect the constitution whoch protects speech and protects those idiiots who would burn the flag. The fact is, when u make a law outlawing it, you are playing into there hands. |

those that would desecrate the NATIONAL ENSIGN ......which means our NATIONAL EMBLEM of CITIZENRY.......our BATTLE FLAG in COMBAT......are not worthy of the benefits of BEING an AMERICAN ......and should get the hell out of the country. what will be next......going to IWO JIMA to deface and pull down the MONUMENT there.....the COMBAT MARINES jointly raising a falling U. S. FLAG ...with the top outstretched hand to the flagstaff belonging to INDIAN IRA HAYES? you can include the SUPREME COURT JUSTICES coming up with the decision that this is "free speech"..on my list to get the hell out of the country. before they leave.....they should go to every living WW2 VET......men in their 70-late 80's ...most of them in nursing homes around the country.....and APOLOGIZE to them for their country having required them to fight for the "burners" freedoms by following that flag in to battle. DESPICABLE.....DISGUSTING......UNIMAGINABLY ABOMINABLE concept......to allow the people NOT WORTHY of her EMBLEM ...to burn OLD GLORY. |

I don't think its free speech. I find it wrong to burn anything that is of pride to any country. I am against burning the Iran flag, or North Korean flag, just as much as I am against burning the United States flag. It is a symbol of that country, and hope to those people. I don't know who can justify that flag burning is freedom of speech. If your going to burn a flag, you might as well be throwing your citizenship out the door, because you really do not care about your country. |
