Jefferson County Attorney's office to publish names of "deadbeat" parents

In a few weeks, hundreds of local parents will be making headlines. But it's probably not something they'll be proud of.

This is a tactic the county prosecutor has tried before, and it has paid off big time for some parents.

Aisha Maddox has a court order for child support from her daughter's father, but hasn't received a payment in years. "It would really help if I was able to receive some type of monetary support for her....We received one payment when her father was arrested about seven years ago."

Maddox has a full-time job, but says the non-support still limits her daughter's extracurricular activities. "Say, for instance, gymnastics...I can't afford to make those payments every week."

Jefferson County Attorney Irv Maze says so called "deadbeat" parents in Jefferson County owe millions of dollars in back child support and he plans to collect: "We take every amount owed very seriously....The folks we're going after, you've got to really work at it to get to the point where you're going to have your name published."

In a few weeks, Maze's office will publish the names of the county's worst non-support offenders in the Courier-Journal. The same tactic paid off last year. Maze says, "Much to my surprise, the phone was ringing off the hook. We were able to, with the public's help, collect right at a million dollars."

And if that happens again this time, Aisha Maddox hopes she's one of the parents who receives the money she's owed. "And it's not about me, it's about my child. I just want what's owed to her."

If you know the whereabouts of someone who owes back child support, the County Attorney's office has set up a hotline for you to call. That number is 502-574-0821. Meanwhile, Metro Council is providing a $25,000 grant to pay for the ad.
