http://www.cnn.com/2006/US/07/07/tunnel.plot/index.html
(CNN) -- U.S. and Lebanese agents have foiled terrorist plans to attack New York's transportation system, U.S. authorities said Friday.

Counterterrorism sources confirmed that a plot to blow up tunnels in lower Manhattan was uncovered several months ago when intelligence about the plan emerged in chat rooms on the Internet..........

I can't believe how dumb the terrorists were to use a chat room to discuss it.

Well, these terrorists were dumb enough to think they could flood above-sea-level Manhattan like below-sea-level New Orleans was flooded! They were also dumb enough to think that they could build a bomb large enough to blast through the concrete, steel, and bedrock necessary to flood the tunnels. That'd be one huge bomb!

Also, think about the kind of personality attracted to being a terrorists or a suicidal terrorist. Disaffected people who aren't bright enough to find a useful way to overcome their disaffectedness. They only have enough intelligence to lash out in anger.

Terrorist leaders are, on the other hand, more intelligent than the average person. They accomplish their goals by getting others to kill themselves. You'd never see Osama strap-on!

You have no reasonable expectation of privacy when posting online. The FBI can pretty much listen in all they want.

In case they are listening in now: Hi, guys! Well done. If you catch the leaker, please find an excuse to shoot him. Maybe, he could be trying to escape?

Dont they have Intelligence that picks up certain words, so in that Chat room there must of been certain words used that got the attention of the FBI personal.

I doubt if you are talking to a mate about a good play in baseball they would be reading it lol

They can't read everything. Something suspicious in this particular chat room has to trigger it. Think of all the chat rooms that go on all day... tons of them.

It's not that they ARE reading every single thing on the internet.....it's that they legally CAN. And not only the internet....phone calls, bank transactions, you name it. There is no longer the presumption of privacy in ANYTHING you do.

The funny part is, that is one of the things we used to harshly criticize about the old Soviet Union....that they constantly spied on their own people......well well, Big Brother lives on right in the good ol' USA!!!

That is simply not true.

There are activities for which you can expect privacy and those you cannot. For example, broadcasting a radio signal is not private. Neither is broadcasting on the Internet.

And it is broadcasting! When you put something out on the Internet, packets are sent out that pass through scads of other computers owned by people you don't even know. The only reason those computers don't respond to your packet is that it is not addressed to them. BUT THEY COULD! You have even less expectation of privacy in a chat room.

During a legally authorized war, you don't have an expectation of privacy when you are on the phone to a member of the legally defined enemy. Don't call them and you still have an expectation of privacy.

Thank you eye95. You said everything I wanted to say, but organized a lot better and without the ranting/raving in it. Kudos.

You're welcome.

I have to butt in when I believe someone has said something that is patently false.

You may believe it to be patently false, but it is an indisputable fact that the U.S. government is now openly spying on EVERYTHING you say or do. And if you don't think this stuff is ripe for exploitation and abuse, you are incredibly naive.

Perhaps you like the government using "terrorism" as an excuse to monitor what you say, who you say it to, what you buy, what you look at.....I consider it an appalling invasion of privacy.

Privacy.....what a concept.....definitely should be stored in a time capsule, because the next generation will have no idea what it once was.

I think it comes down to this. Would you rather have the topic of this thread read "Terrorist plot foiled" or "Another 9/11".

Interesting....you believe 9/11 was a hoax/cover-up/conspiracy....but you have total belief when the government alleges it has broken up a terrorist "plot"....

That is patently false, too. You can't just make a blanket statement like that and expect it to be credible.

Privacy or security is a false choice presented for political gain. Once again, only people who are contacting al Qaeda are being listened in on. There is no violation of privacy of anyone not talking to the nameed enemy in an authorized war.

No, I said it could be a conspiracy. My point was we shouldn't always believe what the government says. Sure, this could be false. But I'd much rather have a false story of a terrorist break up than a real story of an act of terrorism...
