We’re at the halfway point in the season. Real Cy Young talk is beginning. Right now, the obvious front runners for the Cy Young would have to be Halladay, Mussina, Schilling, Contreras, Kazmir, Liriano, Zito, Verlander, Lackey, and Santana. As anyone who visits the board recently knows, I made a similar post as to who was leading in the Cy Young in early June. Since it's the All Star break, and since there has been an insurgence of new pitchers in the race, I've decided to update. So, to determine who deserves the Cy (in my opinion), I'm going to look at 6 stats -- ERA, WHIP, K/BB, HR Allowed/Start, IP/Start, and OBA. Those stats are all based upon how well the pitcher is doing, not how well the offense behind them is playing. I will use a point system, where if you have the best numbers in that category, you get 10 points, and the worst, 1 point.

ERA:

10 - Liriano (1.83 ERA)
9 - Lackey (2.88 ERA)
8 - Halladay (2.92 ERA)
7 - Santana (2.95 ERA)
6 - Verlander (3.01 ERA)
5 - Mussina (3.24 ERA)
4 - Kazmir (3.27 ERA)
3 - Zito (3.29 ERA)
2 - Contreras (3.38 ERA)
1 - Schilling (3.60 ERA)

Subtotal:
Liriano 10
Lackey 9
Halladay 8
Santana 7
Verlander 6
Mussina 5
Kazmir 4
Zito 3
Contreras 2
Schilling 1

WHIP:

10 - Liriano (0.97 WHIP)
9 - Santana (1.00 WHIP)
8 - Lackey (1.02 WHIP)
7 - Halladay (1.03 WHIP)
6 - Mussina (1.04 WHIP)
5 - Schilling (1.09 WHIP)
4 - Verlander (1.17 WHIP)
3 - Contreras (1.18 WHIP)
2 - Zito (1.29 WHIP)
1 - Kazmir (1.31 WHIP)

Subtotal:
Liriano 20
Lackey 17
Santana 16
Halladay 15
Mussina 11
Verlander 10
Schilling 6
Kazmir 5
Zito 5
Contreras 5

K/BB Ratio:

10 - Schilling (7.67 K/BB)
9 - Santana (5.75 K/BB)
8 - Mussina (4.70 K/BB)
7 - Halladay (4.50 K/BB)
6 - Liriano (4.43 K/BB)
5 - Kazmir (2.84 K/BB)
4 - Lackey (2.55 K/BB)
3 - Contreras (2.41 K/BB)
2 - Verlander (2.09 K/BB)
1 - Zito (1.61 K/BB)

Subtotal:
Liriano 26
Santana 25
Halladay 22
Lackey 21

Contreras 8

6 - Kazmir (0.631 HR/S)
5 - Zito (0.632 HR/S)
4 - Verlander (0.647 HR/S)
3 - Santana (0.737 HR/S)
2 - Mussina (0.842 HR/S)
1 - Schilling (1.000 HR/S)

Subtotal:
Liriano 36
Halladay 30
Lackey 30
Santana 28
Mussina 21

3 - Verlander (3.04 OBA)
2 - Kazmir (0.310 OBA)
1 - Zito (0.327 OBA)

Total:
Liriano 50
Halladay 46
Santana 46
Lackey 44
Mussina 31
Schilling 28
Contreras 27
Verlander 22
Kazmir 19
Zito 18

What a difference a month can make. The last time I calculated who statistically deserved the Cy Young, Halladay was ahead in a landslide, followed by Contreras, Mussina, and Santana. However, during June the Twins took off through the standings, and it was on the backs of Liriano and Santana. The numbers show as much. Right now, as much as I hate to say it, Liriano is the best starter in the AL, and is the front runner for the Cy Young at the half way point. Shock-er.

Extremely hot recently: Liriano, Lackey, Santana.
Cooling off considerably: Rogers, Sabathia, Contreras.

If Liriano keeps it up, he will seriously have a shot at Cy.

Right now, Liriano is #4 and Justin Verlander is #5. Verlander has played the whole season as a starter and of late, he has went 3-0 in his last 5 starts pitching 22.2 IP allowing 8 runs and 25 hits. Even though he has an ERA of 3.01, WHIP of 1.17 and only 69 Ks, comparing to Liriano, he has 1 complete game, 1 shutout and is having a sensational year with the turnaround of the Tigers.

I would say it's actually between Halladay, Ryan, Papelbon, Liriano and Santana. If Liriano keeps up this pace, he will win it rather easily.

IMO closers shouldn't win the Cy Young, they should just win the Rolaids award.

If you want me to do it, give me 8 or 10 of the front runners. I don't watch the NL nearly as often.

I think you've got it right on the money, except Arroyo should probably get atleast some consideration. He's played exceptionally well compared to his career numbers.

Closers should be able to win the Cy Young award, they pitch.

I never said they shouldn't win the Cy Young. Chances are, however, they won't. Being a starter takes a lot more skill for a number of reasons:

1. They have to pace themselves. They can't throw 97 mph fastballs every other pitch. They'll wear themselves out.

2. Batters see the starters more than once. Within the game, the pitcher has to adapt his approach to each batter, whereas the closer only see a few hitters, once, so they can just throw whatever they want, whereever they want.

3. Closers always work with the lead. Starters pitch from a tie ball game, to a losing ball game, to a winning ball game. When you're pitching and you're already behind, it's a lot more stressful in comparison to a closer coming in with a 2 or 3 run lead and only needing 3 outs.

That being said, if a closer completely dominates with K's and saves countless ONE RUN ball games, then he definetely deserves consideration. In Papelbon's case, 80-90% of his saves seem to come with a 2 or 3 run lead. That's not high pressure.

The closers should just win the Rolaids Relief man of the year award. They don't pitch enough to win it, I mean come on like 50 innings?

lol The twins havent done jack through the standings. There still like 10 + games behind in the Al Central and they have maybe gained like 3 games on the White Sox and Tigers.

Lol, sure they did. They went from bottom feeder to 10 games above .500. That's a pretty good run.

There win percentage is better but they havent gained anything on the White Sox or Tgers because all 3 have had a amazing month.

Ok then, let me re-word my statement.

"However, during June the Twins took off on a strong winning spree, passing Cleveland in the standings. It was on the backs of Liriano and Santana. The numbers show as much."

Anyways, back to discussing the Cy Young.

I looked through some numbers, and I picked out who I believe are the top 10 pitchers in the NL. If you disagree with a name on the list, or want a name added, let me know ahead of time.

Glavine (NYM)
Oswalt (HOU)
Capuano (MIL)
Carpenter (STL)
Zambrano (CHC)
Arroyo (CIN)
Webb (ARZ)
Penny (LAD)
Schmidt (SF)
Young (SD)

Does the list look good?
