Schilling's a mortal lock. Baseball history is littered with examples of players who ride postseason success into Cooperstown.

Smoltz deserves to make the Hall. But he might need one more strong season after this one -- and a nice, round 200th win voters can easily identify -- to get to Cooperstown.

Schilling: NO

Wins:

Blyleven 287
Kaat 283
Schilling 192

ERA:

Blyleven 3.31
Schilling 3.40
Kaat 3.45

Blyleven is not in the HOF
Kaat is not in the HOF

why should Schilling be in? Just cause of 8 postseason wins? I don't think so...

Come on BCB, you should know that in today's Major Leagues with 5-man rotations there is almost no way to get 300 wins (Clemens, Maddux, and almost Glavine are exceptions). That is why we will never see a 30 game winner again because of this and pitch counts. You gotta adjust your standards and take into account the fact that baseball is changing.

BTW, I got Kaat, Blyleven, Smoltz, and Schilling baseball cards. Go figure

Who cares what everybody else thinks? If it makes the team better, that's all that is important.

So Jamy Moyers a lock, since he played in this day and age of baseball, and ALL his numbers are better than Schillings

I think they both deserve it. You can't compare them to pitchers of the past, you have to compare them to the pitchers of their generation. They both pitched vs a bunch of roided up players and were dominating. Schilling had the great 04 postseason run and Smoltz had the stint as a dominant closer just to top it off.

The thing is, you never hear anyone acknowledge Moyer as a great pitcher. To get in the HOF, a pitcher should be someone who strikes fear into hitters.

Well then people who throw 102 MPH will get into the HOF... if that's the case, Maddux shouldn't go in

But people know when they go up against Maddux that they are going up against a 1st Ballot HOFer. Thats the kind of fear I am talking about. You understand that kind of fear Braveschopbraves?

I think if Schilling finishes out this year strong and has a solid year next year he's got a decent chance.

yes I understand that, and I was exaggerating....

but fear shouldn't be a reason why people do/don't get into the HOF....

I'm more scared of someone who throws 103 and half the pitches are at the head than someone who has a nice big curve and tops out at 85 but has a good variety of pitches....

I wouldn't be mad if Schilling makes it...

still shouldn't be a reason to judge if someone should be in the HOF....

Didn't I say that this fear/respect would be part of the factors that decide whether a guy goes into the HOF? If I didn't say it then I have said it now.

I think Schilling will probably go in, but Smoltz will fall short. If he wins 300 games, which I doubt, he'll go in. How many people have a 50 save season and a 20 win season?
