DETROIT -- The Detroit Tigers acquired first baseman Sean Casey from the Pittsburgh Pirates on Monday in exchange for minor-league pitcher Brian Rogers.

Casey, a career .304 hitter, gives the AL Central-leading Tigers the left-handed-hitting presence they have lacked as they head toward a playoff berth.

Casey hit .296 (63-for-213) with 15 doubles, three home runs and 29 RBI in 59 games this season with Pittsburgh.

Rogers, 24, went 3-2 with one save and a 2.39 ERA in 37 relief appearances this season with Double-A Erie of the Eastern League. He was Detroit's 11th round selection in the 2003 draft from Georgia Southern University.

To make room for Casey, Detroit optioned the contract of first baseman Chris Shelton to Triple-A Toledo.

Kinda hard to believe Sheltons fallen off enough for the Tigers to do this. He started off the season so well.

Hanley Ramirez doesn't make errors--the ball is just afraid of him.
Shadez was the first man to walk on the moon... with sunglasses on.
In rookie ball, he drove a ball to deep centerfield, only to be informed he had been traded on his way to first base. So, he sprinted to the wall and robbed himself of a homerun.
He can turn a man to stone just by looking at him without his shades.
Was pointed at when Babe Ruth supposedly called his shot.
The June 24th game between the Marlins and Yankees was not, in fact, called by rain as was previously reported. Hanley had plans. And by plans we mean a date. With a girl. A babe if you will.

It sounds like a good trade for the Tigers. Shelton has been struggling since he started off good.

Yea but you wouldn't have thought he'd fall off this much. Some people thought he might actually try and compete for the HR title.

I certainly didn't. I knew he was a fluke.

Shelton was an obvious fluke, great move by the Tigers, it'll help them run away with the division quicker.

good, too. He can run. He can hit (and hit for power). He can throw. He can
field. And he's good-looking." -Torii Hunter choosing Granderson over Sizemore

Shelton isn't a fluke..he's just young and streaky. Pitchers figured him out quickly. He will be back eventually, he has potential.

Heh, I told you Shelton was garbage, everyone was saying he was going to be an MVP top runner, but I told you Shelton was completely overhyped. Haha, but anyway, about the Trade, pretty good for Tigers.

VERY good. Just what we needed. A left hander contact bat, that doesn't strike out 600 million times. He's got a decent average, and a nice OBP at .377.

Very good move by the Tigers.

Good trade for the Tigers, they get one of the most under-rated players in the game.
