In the this or that thread, I posted about Alfonso Soriano's complete failure as a defensive player. This was posted as a response..
Actually, Soriano is maybe the worst defensive player in baseball history. I like the way you still use errors to judge a defensive player and then all me crazy. His zone ratings are horrible, and I've never seen someone just look more lost in the field than Soriano. And he leads the league in assists? Congratulations. His arm is bad enough that guys test it. The guys with the best arms usually don't have many assists, because no one is stupid enough to run on them. However, most base coaches wouldn't think twice about letting someone with a peg leg run on your boy, Soriano. You want to talk about errors though (which are completely meaningless, but oh well), why don't you look up the errors leaders from '01-'05. Soriano had well over twice as many errors as the second most erred second baseman. I'll go ahead and help you out with that, and give you the number of errors Soriano made in that year, and his ML rank among second basemen in parenthesis. 2005 - 21(1) 2004 - 23(1) 2003 - 19(1) 2002 - 23(1) 2001 - 19(1) A move to left field was necessary because his defense made him a detriment to his team at second base. His glove didn't magically get better with the move. He's still horrible. |

Actually, Soriano has a great arm in left field. The debate about moving him to the outfield did not start this off-season, it was started 2-3 seasons ago. He's proving it this year, and people still run on him, and he continues to throw them out. Yes, he's bad in other areas, but that comes with experience. Remember, he really hadn't played the OF professionally until this year. It takes awhile to learn a position, especially when your pending free agency in the league. |

Again, his glove is horrible. He can move all he wants to. His ability to make a play on a ball doesn't magically get better with a position switch. He was moved for damage control. |

Dude.. Not every ball hit to left field is hit in the air right to him. If that were the case, I could be a Major League left fielder. He looks like a lost puppy every time a line drive is hit in his general direction. His range is still horrible, and his zone ratings are seventh worst in the Major Leagues. |

Yeah.. It basically divides the field up into 22 zones. Fielders get their rating based on outs made in certain zones - rewarding outs made in zones that require plus range to reach. It helps define range. The way the ratings are figured varies between infielders and outfielders, because if not, infielders would tend to be underrated. That is a pretty loose overview of what it is, but there's a lot more detail in understanding it. I don't know how to explain it without making this post a lot longer than it should be. I'll look for a link or something. |

You are my hero. I've been preaching Zone ratings for 2 years and no one has given it a chance. It is the most effective way to judge fielders. Finally someone understands. |

Well, errors are obviously a flawed stat, because they almost reward guys that don't have the range to make a play on balls hit outside their zone. I'm also not a fan of range factor. I usually take everything Bill James says as gospel, but I'm not sold on Win Shares as a quality defensive stat, either. I'm also a believer that being able to put a precise judgement on a player's defense through stats is nearly impossible, but I find that zone ratings and FRAA (Fielding Runs Above Average) are, by far, the most accurate. |
