Quote:

BOSTON -- Boston Red Sox pitcher Curt Schilling called on Roger Clemens to give up the four Cy Young Awards he's won since 1997 if he can't clear his name from allegations that he used steroids to prolong and enhance his career.

"If he doesn't do that then there aren't many options as a fan for me other than to believe his career 192 wins and three Cy Youngs he won prior to 1997 were the end," Schilling wrote Wednesday in his blog, 38pitches.com. "From that point on the numbers were attained through using [performance-enhancing drugs]. Just like I stated about Jose [Canseco], if that is the case with Roger, the four Cy Youngs should go to the rightful winners, and the numbers should go away if he cannot refute the accusations."

Schilling noted in the 3,200-word posting that he was a fan of the seven-time Cy Young winner who owed much of his success to a stern talking-to he received from Clemens when Schilling was a prospect in the Boston system.

"His 'undressing' of me and lecture were a major turning point," Schilling said. "I've always respected his career accomplishments and regarded him as the greatest pitcher to ever play the game."

But, having called on Canseco to give up his 1988 AL MVP award, and noting also the unrefuted evidence against Barry Bonds, Schilling acknowledged he could not avoid questioning Clemens' accomplishments, as well.

"Can you separate what Barry is accused of from what Roger is accused of?" Schilling said. "If ... both of these men end up being caught, what does that say about this game, us as athletes and the future of the sport and our place in it? The greatest pitcher and greatest hitter of all time are currently both being implicated, one is being prosecuted, for events surrounding and involving the use of performance enhancing drugs. That [stinks]. ... The sport needs fixing."

Clemens was the biggest name in the report by former Senate majority leader George Mitchell that detailed the widespread use of performance-enhancing drugs in baseball. Clemens has denied using performance-enhancing substances.

Schilling commended those who've apologized for using performance-enhancing drugs and called on everyone accused to prove their innocence or apologize for their mistakes.

"The world is full of good to great people that have made mistakes of this magnitude or worse," Schilling wrote. "These guys made mistakes, and I do mean mistakes. They didn't accidentally do this, this was a conscious decision with far reaching implications and they should be held accountable."

While saying Canseco's "entire career, all of it, is a sham" and saying "he was never in his life a major league player," Schilling also acknowledged that many of Canseco's claims about other steroid users have been corroborated.

"He has broken the flood gates on a topic that went unspoken on for far too long," Schilling said.

The runners-up in Clemens' last four Cy Young-winning years were Randy Johnson (1997 and 2004), Pedro Martinez (1998) and Mark Mulder (2001).

Schilling was among those who testified in March 2005 to a U.S. House committee investigating steroids, along with Mark McGwire, Sammy Sosa and Rafael Palmiero. The same committee has scheduled hearings for Jan. 15.

Clemens has not been asked to attend, though it's possible that the committee could decide to ask Clemens or other players to appear that day -- or at a future hearing, if there is one.

I care. Baseball purists care. Pitchers who weren't on hGH care. The hitters who faced him care. Record holders who did it without chemical enhancement care.

I could go on.

Schilling is right. He came out heavily in defense of Roger at first, but now has backed off a bit. He's gone from "The allegations aren't true and Clemens should sue your sorry asses" to "If they're true, then give it all back." Good to see.

Even though giving them back might help clean up his public image, it's still a lot of shame to bear and I think Schilling's main motive was only to fire up the Yankee-Red Sox rivalary even more (because Clemens won some Cy Youngs as a member of the Yankes).

good, too. He can run. He can hit (and hit for power). He can throw. He can

Schilling is just speaking his mind. He doesn't hold anything back. I like that about him. He's a great standup guy.

HGH is a preformance enhancer its a recovery and stamina drug. When your injuried it helps you get off the DL faster, when your old it helps you play longer with less aches and pains. I honestly don't know why its a banned substance. Its not like HGH helps you hit harder and more HR's or pitch even pitch better.

But Clemens took Riods too so that is a preformance enhancer.

I thought HGH was a preformance enhancer, while Roids helps you heal faster.

Negative Ghost Rider.

Other way around. HGH is a growth Hormone that makes muscels and bones "Grow". So when you tear your Rotator cuff your doctor may percride HGH in order for you to heal faster. The effect of HGH on a 9 year old makes him go through purberty. It simply makes the Body react to things faster. HGH does not build mucsle, power, speed, or strength. It can however inscrease stamina like I said before.

Steriods on the other hand are muscle enhancers. So when your in the gym you build yourself faster. Pack twice as much muscle. You get stronger.

Its a misconception that HGH is preformance enhancer.

How come when I go to the doctor though, I am prescribed steroids? I was given a steroid known as decadron. Certainly not trying to bulk up. It was to help me heal from an injury.

Dunno. Steriods can be used for lots of things, and the amount is what matter. I have been offered steriods to clear up some of the bumbs on my arms. HGH is relativaley new though, so you must remember that.

Riods have been around longer. I don't kow as much about riods as I do about HGH, but I do know the amount and type your take it what matters.

I thought roids boosted testorone, hence roid rage, and builds muscle. HGH can be used to build muscle, but has more uses. I heals injuries faster. I hate it when people call HGH and roids the same thing

Thank you sir. Riods and HGH are two very different things. Plus I mean you can't argue with the guys that used them. Pettitte said he took HGH to heal his elbow injury.

A former laughed at the fact that HGH is even a banned substance.

I agree! And Bonds 756 Home Run Record should be taking away. And the 71 Homers should be striped too.
