Duncan, Cabrera, Gomes suspended

Quote:

SARASOTA, Fla. -- Six members of the Yankees and Rays were disciplined on Friday for their actions in a benches-clearing incident on Wednesday at Progress Energy Park in St. Petersburg.

Yankees infielder Shelley Duncan and outfielder Melky Cabrera were each suspended for three games, and Rays outfielder Jonny Gomes will be suspended for two games, all in addition to fines of an undisclosed amount.

The announcement was made on Friday by Bob Watson, Major League Baseball's vice president of on-field operations.

Duncan slid hard into second base in the second inning of Wednesday's game, spiking Rays second baseman Akinori Iwamura. Duncan's actions were termed "violent and reckless" by Watson.

Cabrera was also disciplined and fined for violent and aggressive actions. A videotape review of the incident showed Cabrera punching a Rays player during the incident at second base, according to a report on SI.com.

Gomes charged in from right field and hit Duncan from behind after the play was completed. Duncan's violent actions escalated the incident, in which Yankees coaches Kevin Long and Bobby Meacham were also ejected.

Yankees manager Joe Girardi, Long and Meacham were all fined for their roles in the incident.

If the suspensions are not appealed, they will begin on March 31. The Yankees will open the regular season at home against the Blue Jays, while the Rays will open against the Orioles in Baltimore.

The Rays and Yankees will meet twice more in Grapefruit League play, including a split-squad matchup at Legends Field on Saturday afternoon. The two clubs sparked a Spring Training rivalry last Saturday when infielder Elliot Johnson hit catcher Francisco Cervelli in a ninth-inning collision, fracturing the backstop's right wrist.

Any player that purposely sucks to get traded shouldn't be awarded MVP, no matter what he does for his new team.
