Red Sox vote not to board plane for Japan, play final spring game ESPN.com news services
FORT MYERS, Fla. -- The Boston Red Sox are threatening to boycott their season-opening games in Japan unless their coaches and other staff are paid for making the trip.
Mike Lowell has told The Boston Globe the team voted unanimously not to take the field for their final spring training game or to board the plane later Wednesday for Japan.
Manager Terry Francona and his players are upset after learning the staff is not going to get a $40,000 stipend that the players are receiving. Francona had told his coaches they would be paid.
The World Series champions are to begin their season against Oakland on March 25 and 26.
The Red Sox clubhouse was closed to reporters because of the dispute and the team had not taken the field for batting practice before its last scheduled spring training game in Florida against Toronto.
"We had an agreement," Curt Schilling, one of a handful of Red Sox players who talked with Major League Baseball on ground rules for the trip, told ESPN's Claire Smith.
"Some of the promises have already been taken away, now this," Schilling said. "As far as the players are concerned, [withholding the coaches' bonuses] can't happen."
''When we voted to go to Japan, that was not a unanimous vote,'' Lowell told the Globe, "but we did what our team wanted us to do for Major League Baseball. They promised us the moon and the stars, and then when we committed, they started pulling back. It's not just the coaches, it's the staff, the trainers, a lot of people are affected by this.
"I'm so super proud of this team," Lowell said, according to the Globe. "When we put it to a vote it was unanimous, we're all in agreement that we're not going to put up with this.''
That the players would consider such action "is really appreciated, to say the least," Red Sox hitting coach Dave Magadan told Smith. "It means as much as the money itself.
"While we're very fortunate, a lot of people don't realize what we do. It's nice to get recognition from the players."

Wow, So the Red Sox might start 0-2.
|

Hanley Ramirez doesn't make errors--the ball is just afraid of him. Shadez was the first man to walk on the moon... with sunglasses on. In rookie ball, he drove a ball to deep centerfield, only to be informed he had been traded on his way to first base. So, he sprinted to the wall and robbed himself of a homerun. He can turn a man to stone just by looking at him without his shades. Was pointed at when Babe Ruth supposedly called his shot. The June 24th game between the Marlins and Yankees was not, in fact, called by rain as was previously reported. Hanley had plans. And by plans we mean a date. With a girl. A babe if you will.

yeah it's been all over the news here
Personally, I have to agree with the decision. It's also been reported that Oakland did the same thing.

They all get a salary, why do they need a bonus to do the same job they are getting paid for already?
The players can throw together their clubhouse fees and take care of them like they do everywhere else every other season. But, I guess these multi-millionaires need that extra $40,000 to make ends meet as well as have their families provided 1st class travel over there as well.
Why not take the million given to the two teams and divide it 30 or 40 ways to make sure everyone gets a piece of the pie, rather than the 25 ways to make sure the players are covered? You divide it 40 ways (that's 25 players, 15 coaches/staff), then pretty much every player, coach, and staff member gets $25,000 each. Is that not enough?

It was part of the package that the MLB presented to both clubs when they first proposed the idea. After both clubs agreed to participate, a lot of the things in the aforementioned package had falling by the wayside (so to speak) and this is the one thing that the players couldn't let slip by.

1. It was coach compensation, not player compensation. The players refused to go unless the coaches and trainers received money from MLB. That's an honorable thing to me. (But as someone said, the players could have just shared with the staff, but w/e).
2. Oakland was the ones who told the Red Sox that the situation had yet to be resolved, so the Red Sox wouldn't have started 0-2, the trip would never happen.

Know what? Let the two teams boycott it.
And I hope MLB doesn't let them make up the games either. And I hope they both miss the playoffs solely because of those two games.

Tell that to Bud Selig (who made the agreement and then turned around and reneged on it)

Update:
Stipend dispute appears resolved
- Quote:
-
FORT MYERS, Fla. -- A misunderstanding over whether the Red Sox coaching, training and clubhouse staffs would receive stipends for making a trip to Tokyo appeared to be resolved on Wednesday, about 40 minutes after the scheduled start of an exhibition game against the Blue Jays.
Boston players delayed the start of their Grapefruit League finale and threatened not to leave for Japan later in the day, but began stretching on the field at about 12:45 p.m. ET.
Boston is scheduled to open the regular season with games against the Oakland A's next Tuesday and Wednesday at Tokyo Dome.
Daisuke Matsuzaka, scheduled to start against Toronto -- as well as the season opener -- pitched in a Minor League game instead.
The Red Sox were in their dugout at City of Palms Park at noon ET, when their game against the Blue Jays was scheduled to start, but retreated to their clubhouse shortly afterward.
"We're not playing, as of right now," Red Sox captain Jason Varitek said at the time. "We have to be prepared to take care of what was ultimately promised to our staff and to everybody else that's on the trip. This isn't about us, this isn't about anything besides [the fact] that there's other people involved that are being forgotten about."
Asked if the Red Sox would board the bus for the airport to leave for Japan this afternoon without a resolution, Varitek said, "We will not."
Major League Baseball senior vice president Rich Levin told The Associated Press that MLB's lawyers were dealing with the situation.
"We're trying to work it out," he said.
When the Red Sox agreed to go to Japan in November, manager Terry Francona and the players said they were under the impression that all personnel would get a stipend of approximately $40,000 for the trip.
"What we want to do this morning is get excited about us playing a baseball game and what I did was spend the morning apologizing to the coaches and being humiliated," said Francona. "That's all I know."
During Tuesday's off-day -- the only one for Boston during Spring Training -- Francona became aware that he and the coaches were not receiving stipends.
The players were upset enough about the matter that they held a meeting among themselves prior to Wednesday morning's batting practice to discuss a proper course of action.
Sox player representative Kevin Youkilis spent time during the pre-game hours discussing the situation with Vernon Wells, who holds the same position for the Blue Jays.
"It's not just the coaches, it's the staff, the trainers, a lot of people are affected by this," third baseman Mike Lowell told the Boston Globe earlier on Wednesday. "I'm so super proud of this team. When we put it to a vote it was unanimous, we're all in agreement that we're not going to put up with this."
Right-hander Curt Schilling made it clear how important the issue was to the players.
"They're part of this team," said Schilling. "They're as important as the players in our mind."
Red Sox hitting coach Dave Magadan was touched by the support from the players.
"To see how the players backed us and how they feel about the work that we do, that meant a lot," Magadan said. "It means a lot. Sometimes we feel like you can have a thankless job, but when things like that are done, you really appreciate and get a feeling for how the players feel about us."
When the players agreed to make the trip in the offseason, Schilling said he was under the assumption that Francona and the coaches would be compensated.
"We heard late yesterday [that wasn't the case]," Schilling said. "I think everyone was kind of caught off-guard because this was kind of the deal from the beginning. Then we found out for sure that the people that were supposed to be taken care of and compensated, the staff members, were not being ... again, the agreement was very clear and we were explicit about it. "
Was there any kind of written agreement?
"It was a verbal, on-the-phone conversation," said Schilling. "All the negotiations I was involved in were on the phone."
Francona said it was his understanding that the managers and coaching staffs of the Yankees and Tampa Bay Rays received stipends for their season-opening trip to Tokyo in 2004.
To Francona, the matter was a lot more about the coaches than himself.
"For a coach, this is, in some cases, two-fifths of their salary for the year," Francona said. "This is a big deal. I don't agree that coaches are second-class citizens. That has never sat well with me, ever."
Francona was the bench coach for the A's in 2003 when they were scheduled to go to Japan, only to have that journey canceled because of the war in Iraq. In that instance, Francona said that the manager and all the coaches were set to get stipends.
Managers and coaches aren't members of the Players Association.
"The coaches never have leverage," said Schilling. "In all the years I've been in baseball, they're the guys usually taken advantage of in situations like this. In this locker room, they're as much a part of this team as the guys on the field."

Good for the player to stand up to the league. If you make an agreement then you should not be able to change what has been agreed upon.

Moral of the story is that the Red Sox should have had these things in writing in the first place.

I heard that the whole team didn't agree to go to Japan...But when the agreement was made everyone was in on it, and that the family stipulation was key...

The Yankees were smart enough to ask for a pool of money and they voted to divide it up evenly between every person that went.
Theo is the one running his mouth saying his players were all for going and weren't going to complain about a thing.
