Yeah Howard and the .220 AVG.

He leads the NL in homers and RBI. He does his job. His job is to knock in runs, not get on base a ton.

It's a trend. The third best Phillie won it last year.

NL RoY: Geovany Soto. His VORP is twice as high as any other NL rookie's.

Pitchers can win ROY too.. Campillo, Lannan, Jurrjens all have a higher VORP

I'd give the ROY to Jurrjens

he has a 3.02 ERA...

Yeah, I totally forgot about VORP for pitchers. But they're really not the same thing, anyway. They share a name, but the formulas are completely different. VORP for position players is a purely offensive metric. The formula for pitchers is a bit more flawed. Jurrjens has still been pretty amazing (128 ERA+!), especially for an age 22 season, and he's right there with Soto. If the season were to end right now, I wouldn't be disappointed with either choice.

I tend to favor offensive players when it comes to awards, though, because they play everyday. Really, that's a pretty big flaw when it comes to awards where pitchers and hitters are both eligible. It's comparing apples to oranges.

yeah that's definitely true. I probably have some bias towards Jurrjens *ATL*

and Soto is slowing down (.747 OPS in June, .661 OPS in July), so hopefully Jurrjens could take it by the end of the year.

Yeah. If that trend continues (which I don't expect it to really, at least not THAT drastically), it's definitely Jurrjens. Then again, Jurrjen's DERA is 4.07, so the defense behind him is giving him quite a bit of help. Ah, who cares? They're both awesome.

Duke's ERA rose half a point today after facing the Rangers and he gets the Red Sox next weak. His Cy Young chances are done. It was only a matter of time before the real offenses caught up to him -- you can only face the hapless Mariners and Angels' offense so many times in a year.

Yeah Jurrjens has been unbelievable this year. What a great trade Jon Schuerholz sending Edgar Rentaria to Detroit for a couple of prospects.
