Absollutely you can. How can a player on a non contending team have as much value as another on a contending team? The one without contending will be not contending whether the player is there or not. The one on a contending team is more valuable because HE is the main reason his team is so good. Without him, that team would NOT be in contention.

Take it like this, what player you take away from a team will hurt them the most? In this case, if you take away Pujols or Berkman from their teams, they are far worse.

What are they far worse from? Being bad? Take it THIS way:

Would you rather be 62-100 and last place, or 70-92 and in last place. Does it matter?

I'd also rather win 90 games in the regular season with a WS than 116 and lose in the playoffs, but we know who the better team is ;)

Nope. Good teams win when it matters :P

They should just rename it the Most Instrumental Player In Getting His Team To The Playoffs Award. Avoids confusion. This is kind of like the constitution, does right to bear arms mean for hunting? Does MVP mean your team makes the playoffs? lol

It's the Most Valuable Player. Most valuable doesn't mean your team made the playoffs. If a player on a shitty team is the best player in the league, it's obviously not his fault the team sucks. And say the 4th best player in the league is on a good team, he wouldn't help the shitty team any more, but he has 24 better players around him so he is more valuable?

PS To those who will inevitably call me a hypocrite for making this post and supporting Pedroia for MVP, I have never said that Pedroia is having a more valuable season than someone like Josh Hamilton. Thx.

Any player that purposely sucks to get traded shouldn't be awarded MVP, no matter what he does for his new team.

So I just skimmed the last 3 pages and some of the arguements I read are absurd. Mainly coming from PK and MR. I agree with BCB.

NL MVP: Albert Pujols, David Wright 2nd
AL MVP: I gotta go A-rod here

Yeah so I'm really gonna have to ditch my Pedroia MVP bandwagon, I was banking on him finishing with a hot September. Youk 4 MVP.

Jason Merno is gonna win. Although he does have the "he's already won one" strike against him thanks to the BBWA.

And we all know that the BBWA hate the Red Sox. too.

So look for another absurd Josh Hamilton MVP push.

Lol, what? Quentin's injured...but if he kept playing I'd take him. I'll take A-rod over Hamilton and Sizemore.

It's really between Quentin and A-rod, and I'm stumped.

The Twins and Red Sox alone each have 2 players more worthy.

AL MVP: Josh Hamilton
** A storybook career thus far & one hell of a comeback for Hamilton. He has lead the AL in plenty of stat categories...and done that for most of the season. Who could forget how he stole the show at the Homerun Derby? Imagine this guy playing in a big market like New York or Los Angeles.

NL MVP: Ryan Howard
Biased...of course...but Howard has lead the Biggs in nearly every power hitting statistic all season. I would give Pujols a close 2nd place vote...but the Phillies heading to the post-season gives Howard an edge.
