I made this cake for my daughter last year based on a store bought cake that I saw. She absolutely loved it and it was fun to make. It took at least a couple of hours to ice, but it was well worth it. Cake and Icing: 2-3 cake mixes required for this cake, depends on your base layer. I made my own buttercream icing and tinted it. Decorations: This was my first figurine cake; I decided to get the figurines from the Disney Store (only about $10) so my daughter could play with them afterwards instead of just the cheap cake store version. The sand on the beach was graham cracker crumbs, you could use bread crumbs too. The seaweed and flowers were just melted chocolate-like candy from the bulk barn (an experiment that worked out really well). just something that I improvised with that turned out really well. I melted the candy discs in the microwave then used a spoon to dribble it on waxed paper. I used a wooden skewer to get some lines on the seaweed bushes. The wax paper curled a bit on the longer pieces, which actually added to the 3D properites of the seaweed. Other: I used a wooden dowel that I got from Michael's to attach the loaf cake to the rest of the cake. The loaf cake was too big so I cut it and used the bits to make the rocks that Eric is standing on. I also had to prop Eric up with a bit of dowel, I just iced the dowel so it didn't stand out. |
