Ole Miss student's killer gets parole
Staff, wire reports • February 25, 2009

The man who tortured, raped and murdered a University of Mississippi graduate student in 1986 will soon be released from prison.

The Mississippi Department of Corrections has confirmed that it has received notification from the state Parole Board that it has voted to release Douglas Hodgkin, now 44.

Jean Elizabeth Gillies, an Ole Miss student, was 24 when she was raped, bound and beaten to death in 1986. She was also pregnant.

Douglas Hodgkin, also an Ole Miss student at the time of Jean Elizabeth's death, was sentenced to life in prison for her death in 1987, before juries could recommend life without parole. He became eligible for parole in 1996.

Hodgkin had been up for parole seven previous times before he was approved for parole last month.

Retired Army Col. Paul Herbert, brother of victim Jean Elizabeth Gillies, said his family is appalled with the decision to release Hodgkin.

Retired Oxford Police Chief Steve Bramlett, then a police investigator, called Gillies’ murder “the most heinous crime” he has ever seen.
